My sweet Freddy

 Freddy has been having his ups and downs.  He is active, which is great, but his weight keeps fluctuating and it concerns me.  The last time he went to the vet was a week ago.  He was sooooo skinny and weak.  He put on weight in the time between then and now but now it appears he is losing weight again.  He seems to have fat on his tummy but I can feel his spine and his hips.  He is heavy like a rabbit should be (maybe not as heavy as he could be) but I can feel his bones really well, which is so weird to me.  Is there something that can cause this to happen?  I am going to take him to the vet to have his blood work done and his mouth x-rayed soon. 

His eye infection cleared up but I am still giving him oral antibiotics and his injections.  Also, I am giving him Critical Care.

He might have GI Stasis, the food is sitting in his tummy but not being digested leading to bloating pain and severe weight loss, the antibiotics might have removed too much good bacteria from his intestine or it could be stress, anything! GI stasis is quite common in rabbits but is very dangerous and should be treated imediatly when noticed.

I strongly advise a vet visit ASAP

What antibiotics is he on? A few times Bindi was on Oral Baytril, I found him losing weight which I contributed to him eating less hay. I think it just gave him less of an appetite.

Yeah he is on oral Baytril. I am not sure what the injection is. He gets it every other night. He gets one tonight and then he’ll only have two more after tonight.

Freddy eats a ton of hay….I noticed the water isn’t disappearing as quickly and he isn’t spending as much time at the water bowl…Which could be a good or bad thing. He was drinking WAAAAAY too much water. I filled a water bowl to the brim one night and watched him drink half the bowl by himself in a matter of minutes. I couldn’t believe my eyes. That is one of the reasons I knew something was incredibly wrong (well that, and the fact he had lost weight and was weak).

I forgot Monday was a holiday which makes me crazy now because I won’t be able to get him to a proper vet until probably Wednesday or Thursday at best.

Last night when he was eating his Critical Care I noticed his stomach was gurgling a bit and he was eating it so fast that I thought he was choking. So I took it away (he only had a tiny bit left anyway). Scared me half to death. I am wondering if he has something going on with his tum tum.

 

I don’t think it’s GI Stasis.  He poops normally, eats, and drinks….

Amy, I’m not sure how much help I can be which is why I didn’t write sooner, and now I’m rushing to go out. Hoping that bumping the thread will get you some more informed info. That said without double-checking if memory serves all I’ve ever heard is that you Want your rabbit’s stomach to be making noises. I’d be a lot more worried if he had a quiet digestive track because you Want the gas to be moving through and some times that’s a noisy process.

I understand your concern about the gobbling (mind you considering how many people weren’t able to get critical care down their rabbits I think you probably have the lesser problem), I’d suggest trying to give him very little bits at a time. Not sure how you are preparing and feeding it but just giving it bit by bit should help.

If you are still worrying about gi problems I’d suggest you take a look at this link: https://binkybunny.com/FORUM/tabid/54/aft/113683/Default.aspx Sounds as though he’s getting more then enough meds but if you really worry you can give a dose of symethicone, it won’t hurt. There are instructions and tips on the page above. But from my limited experience I really don’t think that is what you are dealing with.
