My oldest boy and I both have one cat each that are partial to us so my younger son was feeling left out and asking for something sweet and cuddly to love and be loved by him. So after a couple of weeks of him dropping hints and me acting like it wouldn’t happen, I went to the pet store to see what they had. Inadvertantly, it was Easter Sunday and they were out so I ear marked a new tiny one for after it was weaned and brought it home yesterday. Jake was in the other room and I just walked in a sat on his bed holding his new baby and then I replied to something he said from in the other room so that he had to come in to find out what I said. His eyes dropped to my chest where I was holding his baby and he gasped!  LOL! He is 12 and a very smart and mostly responsible boy.

Only problem we have so far is that he sneezes a half dozen times 5 minutes after he puts Dig Dug back into the cage! Oh boy!

Has he been tested for allergies? That doesn’t sound good 🙁

There has never been any other reason to test him. He has a sneeze fit nearly every morning when he gets up. He has nearly always slimed the bedsheets and pillow with snot during the night and then he is fine the rest of the day pretty much. Never sick with flu or common cold or anything.

Congratulations on your new bunny. Sounds like your son was very surprised and absolutely thrilled. Welcome to BinkyBunny. I am glad you came here as there can definitely be unique challenges with bunnies, along with lots of joy. And so we are here to help when you need it and share in the joy when it happens too!

Regarding the sneezing — I think that it’s always best to get a vet exam with a rabbit-savvy vet to check him out and make sure the sneezing isn’t a from some sort of health issue. Plus it’s a good idea to get a health exam anyway and establish with a savvy vet as rabbit health can be tricky at times and you need to have a vet you trust.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

              Helloworld!!

BB’s a busy woman. I don’t think she realized who’s doing the sneezing

The name Dig Dug is cute! Did your son name him?

                  Congrats on your new bunny!

What kind of hay are you feeding? My husband is extremely allergic to certain types of hay but not others.

Hmm. Yes, I was just concerned because a sneezing fit after handling a rabbit may indicate an allergy to the rabbit OR a sensitivity to something in the rabbit’s fur, possibly hay dust. People may have no other allergies but then randomly be allergic to something. You wouldn’t know this unless he’s been around rabbits in the past. Definitely don’t have the rabbit housed in his room. Find another location so his room stays fur and hay free. And then encourage thorough hand washing after interacting with or caring for the bunny.

I’m so happy for you two and your new bunny!(: If you want your son to have a bunny that he will not be allergic to, buy ( but preferably rescue!) an Angora. Angora’s do not possess the same allergy-causing qualities as many other animals. I know this firsthand because my girlfriend can’t hold Vegas without getting a little puffy and sneezing like crazy, but she has an Angora named Casino that she can hold all day without a single ill effect (:

That’s interesting Fox! I would not have thought that would be the case with a longer-haired bun. Some folks with rabbit allergies are fine with mini rexes because of their different fur, but I had not heard that about angoras.

We actually found this out on accident!  Ever since we found out she was allergic she’s been really upset that she couldn’t play with the buns, but one day I brought her to my parents store and we were selling two little black angoras and she couldn’t resist holding one even after my constant “Are you sure you want to?  Are you positive?” hehe and she held it and nothing happened!  Looked into it, and sure enough it’s true!(:
