my rabbit needs CT scan, please help.

Hi everyone,

my rabbit had abscess in his cheek and he had surgery last year to remove it. the surgery was very successful but he never fully recovered to eat hay. now he got worse and vet did all the test they can but they can not find anything. vet suggested us to do CT scan. we would love to but the price of the CT scan is 2000. we are looking for a vet school or any place can do a cheap CT scan for us and save this little bun, Please help. if you know any place near San Francisco  Bay Area can do a cheaper CT scan

Hello, I’m sorry to hear that your bunny isn’t doing well. The only advice I have is for you to call around local rabbit recuses for a list of low cost vets in your area. I hope everything works out and your bun feels better soon Judy.

Here is a list of rabbit savvy vets in the SF Bay area. There are quite a few. Maybe there are some that are less expensive, or that know of a place not to far from you that would do the scan at a lower price. I hope that your bunny will get help and feel better soon.

I’m in a different (but similarly expensive) part of the country, and the two closest options quoted about $800 and $1000. I opted to use the more expensive one because they had an exotics specialist on staff.

I would recommend talking to a vet in your area that specializes in rabbits/small mammals at a clinic that doesn’t do CT scans, and see where they would refer you to. You might also take this opportunity to get a second opinion before the CT scan. I’m not suggesting that your current vet isn’t doing a good job, but in cases where it’s hard to figure out what the root cause of a bunny’s issues is, sometimes a different vet is able to look at it from a new angle. An office visit and a look at the results of the tests your current vet has already done is a lot cheaper than immediately getting a $2000 scan, and might give you a better shot at finding somewhere that can do the scan for less.

Wow, 800-1000$? Why so expensive? Here in Boston the CT scans are between 200-500$ 500 being the most expensive at Angell Animal Hospital who have 4-5 vets who specialize in exotic animals such as rabbits. I paid 420$ for the CT scan, plus another 120 for culture and 2 Meds. For 2000$ you could fly out to Boston and get the CT all for like 1000$?? 2000 for a scan is highway robbery.

I do agree with Halycon always best to get a second opinion, what one can’t see another person can, I’m in the same boat and am taking my bun to another exotic speciality vet for rabbits this weekend.

my bunny had abscess remove surgery last year and our vet is the best rabbit doctor in the area (I did call other doctors and they refer me right back to my current vet..). My bunny never go back to eat hay after surgery and his teeth hurts again but they can not find out the main reason for so long. now vet suggest a CT scan and teeth trim, I guess bay area just has very expensive price for everything.

Oh, I just meant a referral for a cheaper CT scan, not a better vet. If your current vet is unwilling to recommend a different hospital for that service, you can go to another vet who doesn’t do CT scans in house and they should be able to tell you about multiple local options for having it done. They might not know about pricing but they can tell you who does CT scans in the area.

I called one place near me and they can do CT for 1000… still a lot but feel better than 2000.
