I am pissed. I am angry right now.
I feel so upset, and I feel horrible about my dad getting CRAP from customers tomorrow.
My dad and I are having a hard time hanging onto life with bills.. and now this. Thanks, voters. And uninformative commercials.
This just passed tonight at 8:30 pm Pacific Standard Time.
I am… in rage right now.
I need a hug.
((((((hugs))))))
So sorry to hear! What imbeciles! That is horrible that happened. So Costco was that determined to sell liquor in their stores? I never really thought it was that big of an item! I never buy liquor at Costco! If you dont mind me asking, what does your dad do?
I guess I’m a little confused. Why is your dad going to lose his job? What does he do? What does the article mean by deregulation? Isn’t liquor sold at stores like Costco? There aren’t Costco’s where I live, but you can buy liquor at any CVS, Walgreens, Target, grocery store, etc. Plus about a zillion liquor stores scattered around town.
State run liquor stores = non existant in July 2012.
My dad is a liquor store employee.
1,000 state workers will lose their jobs, go on unemployment.
My job will begin selling sometime in the near future. I hear about all of the crap that happens at liquor stores.. and I am going to be seeing all of that crap in the future.
Hugs to you and your family Brittany!
I live in Canadialand so I have no idea about anything involving liquor in grocery stores..
best of luck to you though!
Only beer, wine and spirits are sold at grocery stores, mini marts, and big box stores (Costco, Wal-mart, etc).
Now, if a store is 10,000 square foot or larger, they can sell hard liquor as well.
Costco raised their membership $5 recently. They spent the largest amount on an initative in state history – 22 million dollars. It is the second year that they’ve done this. They lost last year. OF COURSE, they don’t listen to the voters. All for the BIG PROFIT. This is making me change my mind when it comes to supporting big businesses.
BTW, the % of carding in WA is = Liquor stores have a high rate of somewhere in the 90%, other stores have 74%.
This is interesting, I’ve never heard of a state run liquor store before. We don’t usually have a lot of hard liquor laying around the house, I bought my husband some whiskey at the CVS here not too long ago. That’s just a drug store. So your dad is a state employee then? What about unemployment benefits? I know that this sounds scary right now, but I’m sure your dad will find another job. You just have to stay positive! **hugs** for you until then!
Not many states have it anymore.
Yeah, my dad is a state employee. He has federal experience.
He’ll be getting unemployment, but it is going to be even worse with how tight money is currently.
I’m going to help him find another job. A lady from FAA (Federal Aviation) was impressed with his customer service and gave him her card. She is a senior manager at the plant in another city. It is hard for a 55 year old to find a job..
I’ve found inspiration for my next tattoo: “This too shall pass.”
Hugs Brittany. Liquor laws are so weird and varied.
Maybe he could apply at Costo…I’ve heard its actually a great place to work.
There will be smaller private liquor stores too, maybe the one he works at will be one of the ones bought by private owners, and could maybe stay there?
Sorry to hear that. That’s awful that so many people are going to lose their jobs.
Here the government owns all the liquor stores. You can’t even buy beer anywhere else.
(((hugs))) I’m so sorry to hear how hard things are for you guys right now 🙁 Hopefully he’s able to find a job at a privately owned store, or maybe in another industry. It’s absolutely hard to find a job when you’re older, so my heart goes out to him.
I’m sorry. I saw your post on Facebook and I read the article then. So often it feels like elections and issues only affect “other people”, but it becomes particularly real when one hits very close to home. Can he begin looking for another job now or is he contracted or whatever to stay until June?
Everyone can provide support and some suggestions for Brittany, but let’s not get too political. So far we’re good, just a reminder. :o)
Ii totally understand you I live at home with my mom and it is hard to keep up with the bills as well. We are middle class we live pay check to pay check. I feel for you and will pray for you.
Aww that’s a bummer. In CA you can buy liquor at walmart, so I probably would have voted yes for it too. I’ve never even heard of a state-run liquor store.
See if he can get a job at Costco, tell them since they put him out they should hire him
Sorry for more stress on you Brittany, but you’ll get through it I promise!
I’d never heard of a state-run liquor store either, just small private ones… :s I don’t drink though so I don’t know if our grocery stores carry the hard stuff or not, I don’t even know what aisle the liquor is in.
Sorry your dad is losing his job though, that sucks.
Hope the lady who gave him the card will be able to get him in to another job!

No problem Beka ![]()
When it hits home.. it hits. I dreamt about this last night, and woke up really cranky.
I found out that so many of my young coworkers voted against it and it made me cry. All of the workers (including myself) are going to have to have more restrictions put on them and we already have a lot to deal with on a daily basis.
My dad has applied to Costco and nothing ever happened. It is difficult that older people can’t even get jobs due to their age and ‘too much experience.’ He saw a few weeks ago that some of the stores are going to be sold and maybe someone will buy it up. My dad really looked forward to the state pension for retirement.
There are always two sides to every issue. Some of your co-workers are probably just thinking easier access (and maybe cheaper prices?) on liquor. They’re not thinking about the people this will affect. Try not to take it personally. They didn’t vote that way with the sole desire that your dad and hundreds of other people are out of a job.

I think she meant that her coworkers voted against the passing of the bill that allows more widely available alcohol.
It’s weird for me to here of people never being in a state run liquor store :S They are everywhere in British Columbia. My best friend of 18 years, dad is the manager at one in my town.
Malp, I grew up in Pennsylvania and we had them too. Just from my experience there I know that most people didn’t like that method and would vote against them if possible – it’s definitely a case of not thinking how the new law would effect the jobs of the liquor store employees. It’s really too bad for your dad, but don’t take the result personally. In these times, nobody wants to be consciously getting rid of jobs.
I’m in PA where as Elrohwen said, we have state stores. It’s annoying for sure and I’d love to just be able to pick up a bottle when I’m out shopping for other things. As others mentioned, people voting that way werent thinking of the jobs that would be LOST, unfortunately. I feel for you Brittany – that’s a scary place to be in. It’s rough job market for everyone right now, and those who are older tend to have a much harder time finding work again after losing a job. You and your dad are in my thoughts and sending positive vibes your way!
Ugh, still so sorry to hear about all this brittany =[
I’m also still super confused by all this. what is a state run liquor store? is that just a regular liquor store…? here in CA, you can buy booze at safeway, costco, CVS, orrrrr the little independently owned liquor store on the corner 3 blocks away. why can’t they just do that? *scratches head*
I am sorry to hear, but also confused. We don’t have state run liquor stores in MI. Here all you need is a license, and depending on type of business, and type of license, yadda yadda you can pretty much sell any type of boose at almost any type or size of store. Michiganders really like their alcohol.
Angie-la, in some states & provinces the only place you can buy liquor is in a store that’s owned and run by the government. No liquor in grocery or convenience stores etc. The theory is that it gives the government greater contol over pricing and consumption.

Sorry about your dad LoveChaCha! I hope he finds a new job soon. I’ve never heard of state liquor stores either but I’m in WI.
Scooter and Annette explained it. The money that is made from liquor sales in WA last year totaled 400 million dollars and it went to services, programs, teachers, firefighters, etc. 11 million went to paying employees. There are only 7 other states that have government run liquor stores now.
My friend best explained it – you go in, get what you want, and get out. Now that it’ll be in grocery stores, people have to stand and roll their eyes in line.. I can see it now actually. People do it to me all the time, but it doesn’t bother me. It makes me want to go slower
I would spend that time needed with them, they’re just the impatient one.
Anyways, my coworkers made me smile today. One gave me a hug, one coworker went to grab another that dances when she is on her shift
Some of my other coworkers were very concerned about my dad and asked about him. My manager said she cried when she heard the news. I felt greatly overwhelmed by my coworkers. It was a great feeling.
