My bunny tore off his nail. PLEASE REPLY FAST!

I picked Coco up to trim his nails today and I saw that his nail was just dangling off. It was on his front left foot. The “thumb” of it. I VERY GENTLY took a look at it and it fell of completely. I’m not sure if I cut to much or what but I applied pressure to it and the top part of the nail fell off and there is still some nail in that area on his foot. He didn’t make any noise so I don’t think he is in pain. He is grooming it a little and at first was skiddish but now is better and hopping around some more. I don’t have access to the vet right now as all of them are closed. Will he be okay?? He seemed to calm down a bit now. Will he get an infection or something? Please help!! I’m SO WORRIED!! ):

EDIT- I offered him a treat and he ate it. He is also very calm and laid down on the ground. No heavy breathing or pain shown. He also licked my finger and was hopping around and is aware of his surroundings. Please tell me if he is ok. This would be much great appreciated.

when cutting a bunny or guinea pigs claws, it is very easy to cut past the ‘quick’ by mistake, the quick being the point where the nail’s blood supply ends. Unless you cut well above the quick, it isn’t too serious, though very upsetting. even a little above the quick can really bleed.

as long as it stops within a few minutes, then there isn’t anything to worry about, though he might be a bit cross with you for a while. if you are concerned, make sure everything is clean, like litter trays, so he isn’t putting his claw into soiled litter for a while, give him lots of hugs, and try and let him know you are sorry!

Its good to get into the routine of taking just the tips off more frequently, as it reduces the likelihood of this happening. also use the press, press, click method, where you just press without cutting then cut on the third press down. this gives bunny or piggy time to let you know if you are over the quick!

He tore his own nail off? I don’t see why he would be angry with you. This is just something that can happen. As long as the bleeding stops, bunny is likely okay. It might be a good idea to clean the area up and, as GJ suggested, keeping the litter box clean to help it stay clean.

He doesn’t limp or anything but when he is sitting down, he often will pick up his paw and gently groom it. However, while hoppin and jumpin around he’s just like normal. In fact, he is playing with his toys right now and just ate some greens. Is it normal if Coco doesn’t like it too much if I touch his paw??

Can I substitute cornstarch for some flour ?? Also, will this turn into an infection??

My bunny had her thumb nail torn off as well, will it grow back? It has been like 2 months or more and I don’t see it growing. She tore it herself by clinging on to the cube fences after jumping

my rabbit ripped his nail off as well and within a couple months it grew back but the best way I can explain it, is it looks like at the base of the nail, there’s almost a thick coating around it where it had grown in again. but he has no problems with it!

I know i’m a little late but did you take him to the vet??

I woke up one morning and looked into Loki’s cage and their was blood splattered all over his cage and all over his nice white fur  you could imagine the heart attack I had. He didn’t seem like he was in pain at all, he just kept licking at it all the time, which made me panic even more hahhahaa. I took him to the vet and she shaved his toes and used some kind of fluid to basically cauterize it I believe. He was on antibiotics after and that was it! now I make sure to keep his nails nice and clipped to avoid scraping or getting them stuck! (Loki likes to slide all over his cage when he jumps )

I haven’t had any experience with rabbits but I always put my dog’s paw in baking soda to stop the bleeding and stuff when I accidentally cut to close to the quick.

Coco is doing much better now and he is playing with his toys and he also is much more active and his nail isn’t bleeding anymore. So, is there still any need to take him to the vet? Cause he is doing better

If it isn’t bleeding, then it should be okay. Just keep an eye on it to make sure there isn’t any infection.

So I’m not ‘fast’

But Kahlua tore a nail too-when she was sick I was keeping her in a playpen and one day she decided she was better and hoped out, tearing off a nail in the process. It’s grown back and the ‘toe’ is ugly. It was not and is not a big deal. My vet was very unconcerned. I just put polysporin/neosporin on and it was fine.

So I agree, you likely don’t have to go to the vet-keep an eye out for the regular-not eating, pooping, peeing or drinking-add in heat/redness/swelling to the affected area to your watch. But I’m sure Coco will be just fine.
