My bunny sometimes makes wheezing noises?

I have a four year old male Netherland Dwarf named Ray. I noticed this for the first time maybe a month ago, but he is otherwise completely healthy and happy, so I wasn’t immediately concerned but I want to get some other peoples’ opinions.

It is not a constant thing, but sometimes he makes these little nasal wheezes. At first I only noticed it when he was at rest, which is why I didn’t take him to the vet to begin with because I thought he was just snoring. But today he’s running around and I heard him making the wheezing noises.

 Again, no other symptoms or abnormal behavior. I have him on a small amount of Sherwood pellets, organic Sweet Meadow hay, and a big mixed daily salad (parsley, romaine, arugula, kale, endive, bok choy).

Does anyone else’s bunny do this? I am wondering if maybe it’s just dust from the hay? I give him organic grass hay and it has a lot of little dusty bits.

 Or should I take him to the vet?

Sometimes it is only dusty hay. I don’t know if your bunny would eat soaked hay, but another bunny-owner on this forum recently was adviced to soak her bunny’s hay before serving it, in case it was dust from the hay that was the problem.

You could perhaps try that and see if the wheezings go away after a few days.

Thanks for the replies! I think it might be the hay, he of course sticks his whole face in the pile and the wheezy noises have been on and off as opposed to constant.

No discharge or other symptoms!

I would probably just keep a close eye on him for now. Watch for discharge, sneezing or increased wheezing.
