I’d been searching for the right bun to bring home to be a part of my family and a few weeks ago, I saw an ad on Craigslist with these adorable baby buns. I went and visited them and fell in love with her. The woman told me she’d call me and let me know when I could come back and get her. Two weeks went by and I got a text saying she was ready to go. It wasn’t until I got her home and was looking at the pedigree the woman gave me that I noticed her birth date was 1/15.

I’d been doing reading prior to getting my bun and know that they aren’t supposed to be let go that early. Should I be concerned?

I would take the baby in for a wellness checkup, that is a good idea anyway with any new addition. But, if she’s eating OK and pooping OK, it’s sadly not that uncommon for breeders and pet stores to ship bunnies off that early and many of them do fine. Not good for the baby though.

Like Stickerbunny said, this isn’t uncommon. Some breeders let them go as young as 4 weeks, so at least she’s closer to 8…

I agree with the recommendation for a vet visit within the first month for a baseline exam.

I received Lulu at only four weeks, and she will be four years old this summer. I’ve had my fair share of problems with her and I blame the majority of them on the fact that she was too young, but I will never know for sure. It’s just speculation and every bunn is different. The fact that yours is closer to the appropriate age is a good thing though! I would definitely find an exotic vet and get her a wellness exam though. That’s recommended no matter how old they are- once you get a new animal I believe they should always have an exam ASAP. I think you and bunny are going to be just fine

Thank you for the feedback! I am definitely planning on taking her to a vet. She seems to be doing well though. She’s eating a lot, definitely poops, and seems to be doing well adjusting in every other way.

Six weeks is not uncommon, most breeders in my area wean at 4 weeks, give the doe a week of and breed again. Not so good for the rabbits but, the kits generally do fine. I got 4 of the herd I have now at 4 weeks old – owner was giving them away because he had too many rabbits and, they had already been taken form their mother (3 days before I got them). They are 4 months old now and, doing great after my regime of Calf Manna, alfalfa and rice milk mash for a month for them. (They ate more that way and, that was good since they were still in the fill the belly once a day mode.) Now they know rabbit here eat 2 meals a day and, nibble on fresh stuff and hay all day long.

I got her when she was barely over 5 weeks and I honestly had no idea that the woman I got her from was breeding at the rate she was. It wasn’t until I went to pick her up that the woman told me she had already been weaned for a week and that the mom was pregnant again. I’m just glad that my baby bun seems to be doing fine.

I agree with Beka-not ideal but it’s not unheard of.

Just make sure shes eating/drinking/pooping/peeing -the norm and if anything looks off in those areas, or sneezing, eye issues etc then quickly get to the vet. Not much you can do other than monitor health!

I’m not sure I would rush in for an exam solely due to the fact that she’s young. Just because the car ride is stressful -but pick out your vet now, so you can rush in if anything is amiss, otherwise plan your first check up soonish when convenient

Kokaneeandkahlua, she is eating/drinking/pooping/peeing just fine. Everything seems to be normal and she’s settling into life with us well.
