        I’ve come to realize that music is missing from my life. I do a lot of things, but I don’t listen to music as much as I used to.

        I remembered that I had some money on my itunes card left from X-Mas.. so I looked up some Hawaiian music. I think of my mother when I listen to Hawaiian music and I cry. It has been a source of comfort for me.

        In 2009, my grandma documented my mother’s life from the hospital to her hospice. She documented me having a men’s chorus group sing for her, and our final weeks together. After witnessing my mother taking her last breath, my grandma and I cried. I played a song for my mother, and it was this one:

        A few months ago, I had a dream that my mom and I were on the sandy beaches of hawaii, just eating dinner on the beach. It felt like such a real dream.. as if it happened in reality.

        This singer, Isreal Kamakawiwo’ole passed away. The entire state of Hawaii was devestated over his death. He was cremated and his ashes weighed more than the normal person. He had a good heart and a good voice. I find peace when I listen to his music, even though I do cry

        What songs/artists have gotten you through hard times?

          That’s such a sweet story. It’s nice that you can still be with your Mom in your dreams. I dream about my Dad a lot. I believe that spirits can get messages to you in your dreams.

          My Dad and I didn’t have a whole lot in common but we both loved the same type of music. When I hear songs from his favorite bands I usually tear up…but it makes me feel close to him. Music was something that bonded us. He taught me how to play guitar. He gave me his guitar before he died and it’s now one of my most prized possessions.

          I can’t listen to “Tears in Heaven” or “Wonderful Tonight” by Eric Clapton without crying. One of my Dad’s fave bands was the Dire Straits. I love this song too…we both liked rock and blues.

          I remember Saturday mornings. My Dad would always make breakfast and sing funny songs. He used to sing lyrics that made me and my sister laugh…we didn’t believe it was a real song but when we were older we found out it was. This song makes me laugh when I hear it because I remember my Dad signing it. It’s got funny lyrics.

          ” Music is well said to be the speech of angels;
          in fact, nothing among the utterances allowed to man
          is felt to be so divine.
          It brings us near to the infinite.”

          ~ Thomas Carlyle (1795 – 1881) ~

            When I am down, my concert from last year always gets me in a better mood. Made my family really proud with my horn solo at the start.
