Hello! In a couple weeks I will be moving away to another country and Im wondering how to make the adjustment without stressing out my bun too much. The journey will be two days long and I’m debating what type of carrier to buy for it, as my bunny has outgrown his usual carrier. Would it be better with a sturdy one made of fabric or should I stick with a normal plastic one? What about food and water during the journey? Should I stick to our normal routine or?
I’d appreciate any tips and tricks you guys could share!

Member Q8bunny just made a huge move from Quwait to Canada with Chewie. I know she went through quite a lot of trouble with customs, as he had to have a very specific type of carrier. Are you traveling by air? Or train, or something else?

So, I think first check the customs requirements of the country you are moving to, to make sure you have the correct type. I think in general you will want a very sturdy hard sided carrier.

Will you be with him during the journey? I’m hoping so? The closer you can stay to his normal routine the better. Obviously lots and lots of hay and fresh water, and if you can bring veggies for him that would be good.

If you can get him used to the carrier before hand it will help him feel safer.

I second Dana, do check with the airline and, if possible, with the airport as well! Q8, the member Dana mentions, had to take her carrier back for adjustments 2 or 3 times before they allowed her bun to fly out! In some countries rabbits are considered livestock by law and must be in a wooden crate for air transport.

If you’re going by car, any carrier will do, but a fabric carrier isn’t bunny proof. I’d choose a hard carrier that opens both in the top and on the front. Put a puppy pee pad in the bottom and some fleece. Fresh greens are good for fluids during a car ride because water is difficult to keep constantly available.
