Well, I did make the move to NYC a little over a month ago. It’s been stressful leaving the place that was my home for 10 years, plus moving is incredibly expensive. The animals dealt with the commute fine. Since we got here I think Mr. Bun-Bun has adjusted better than either me or my cat – after all, he has his same giant condo, it’s just now taking up a lot of space in a 200 square foot apartment. Hopefully we can get a bigger place in a couple of months. Bun-Bun can binky and do his little zig-zag runs, but he can’t bolt across the apartment at top speed like he used to, there’s not even enough room for that!
He did start peeing inappropriately again a few days ago – first on my bed, then in the middle of the top floor of his condo (he’s never peed there before, and after he peed he stretched down in it), then on the second floor of his condo, out the side onto the floor. Clearly he’s litter trained if he’s 2 years old and goes months with no trouble, I don’t understand why he does this. I also don’t understand why he likes to lay down in his pee, I thought rabbits were supposed to be clean by nature? Does he have mental problems?
Good to hear from you.
I guess my initial thought would be does he have a urinary tract infection. My second thought is that he is still getting acclimated to the new situation – even though a month has past and that seems like he should be settled, it’s possible that in rabbit thoughts, he’s just now realizing the change. So, if you are asking about mental problems – it may just be a temporary setback and hopefully he will settle in again to his routine and not act up.
Welcome to NYC! Moving anywhere can be tough. And this weather isn’t helping either. How is Mr. Bun-Bun doing?
Thank you! I’m just trying to get used to the city… luckily I found a job right away so I don’t have to worry about money too much, but it is disorienting being in a new place.
The weather has been overwhelming, however I don’t think that’s affecting Mr. Bun-Bun since we live in a very small apartment (for now, grrr) and have the AC on pretty much nonstop. If we didn’t use the AC it would be 120 degrees in here and we’d all die.
The pee problem is ongoing. Several times a week he points his butt out the side of his cage and pees onto the floor outside. I clean everything up with vinegar but am kind of at a loss. Is there anything I can put in the spots he tends to pee to dissuade him? Any smells they don’t like? The only thing I can think of is that since he was with someone else his first year and lived in a small pet store cage, he probably wasn’t properly litter trained. His whole cage was lined with carefresh and he tended to pee in two corners but he didn’t have seperate litterboxes until he came to live with me. I just don’t understand why he’ll go months without doing this, and then start peeing on everything. He’s not in pain when he pees and appears completey healthy and full of energy. Who knows.
Whoa NYC huh! I would die if I ever lived there….I stay the heck away from San Fran at all costs!!! I just want a ranch with lots of horses and bunnies haha!!!
Do you think Mr Bun Bun is just marking up the place? Maybe the people that lived there before had a cat or dog or something that he can still smell??? Indy sprayed me in the face before when I was sleeping….*rolls eyes* who knows!
Welcome to the area! I adore NY, though I’m not sure if I could live there, so I like living nearby and visiting once in a while 🙂
Are you living in Manhattan? Or one of the boroughs?
Yeah NYC is a bit much… I’ve always been a city girl but also hate crowds, so I just have to deal with it. Coming from Chicago, it’s not that bad, and the trains are way faster, it’s super easy to get around. I live and work in Brooklyn which is easier to cope with than Manhattan. I go to Manhattan about once a week and am really disoriented there still! Trying to figure it out… I would love to have a bigger space and more animals, but looks like that’s never going to happen here!
My fiance lived here before I got here, and no animal has ever lived here. I think Mr. Bun-Bun is just being bratty. He also has been chasing my poor kitty more than ever. She’s so traumatized by him, poor thing has no idea that he can’t hurt her in the slightest. She weighs 12 pounds and he weighs 3.5 pounds. Oh well.
If I lived in New York, I would not need a gym membership.. that is quite fine with me. I LOVE walking.
Brit, I also love walking around NYC! Every time I go there we walk the majority of the time and I love it. I’ve gotten pretty good at navigating Manhattan, but I’m completely lost on Brooklyn. From what I hear though it sounds like a great place to live (I think I’d rather live there than Manhattan)
Yeah, I love walking too. Brooklyn is bigger than Manhattan so you can’t just walk everywhere… I live right by Prospect Park which is so beautiful, and jog around it a few times a week, which takes an hour. If you go through the center of it, you don’t see any signs that you’re even in a city, it’s never crowded except for holidays.
I need to explore Manhattan by myself. I usually go into the city with my fiance, and since he knows how to get from place to place I just follow him. I need to do it on my own for my brain to start navigating… directions are not my strong point!
DH follows me around like that – no matter how many times we go into the city (which isn’t that often, I guess) he still never has any idea where we are. As far as he’s concerned we walk into the subway station and come out at a random location in the city. lol
I’ve never been to Prospect Park but I’ve seen pictures and it’s beautiful! I think it was designed by the same guy who did Central Park.
Yes, Olmsted designed both parks, and was apparently more proud of Prospect Park than Central Park because the shape and design was completely within his control. We walked through at night after a movie, it was pitch black and completely silent – in the middle of the city! Amazing.
I also work across the street from the Brooklyn Bridge Park, which has the most amazing view of both Brooklyn & Manhattan bridges, and the island of Manhattan with the Statue of Liberty. It’s weird seeing that gorgeous view every day, that people from all over the world travel to see.
My #1 goal is to find a bigger apartment! Maybe then Mr. Bun-Bun will stop peeing on stuff LOL.
Wow, that sounds like an absolutely fantastic place to work! I don’t even sit near a window, so I’m jealous 😉
I read that Olmstead designed my college’s quad area, which is cool. It’s a simple design, but I’ve always loved the huge trees with paths in between.
Someday.. I will go to New York.
Since I was a little girl, I have been fascinated with NY. I always have wanted to live there.. i don’t know why. My heart is drawn to that state.
Well with that said, NYC sounds way cooler than SF.
glad you are enjoying your new city!
I will never go to NYC. No thank you!
Lol. New York is historical.
Yeah, @LoveChaCha… I’m about to go jogging around the site of one of the most famous battles of the Revolutionary War, when Washington retreated. I had no idea, was just reading about the history of Prospect Park when I was bored yesterday.
Visiting is really fun. Living here is a little more difficult but Brooklyn isn’t bad. People live here from all over the world and are really friendly in general.
My fiance was born in San Fran, lived in L.A. then steadily moved Eastward. The two coasts are very, very different! Well at least in San Fran there’s Tartine, where I had the best almond croissant of my life, LOL.
I love NYC. I honestly hated it the first time I visited because I just saw the touristy areas. Now that I’ve lived nearby for 5 years I’ve gotten to know the neighborhoods and I just love it. I’ve converted many friends to loving it too! One from went from hating it to wanting to live there in just one short visit (and she’s been back multiple times since). I still don’t think I’d want to live there (at least not if I wasn’t rich) but it’s my favorite large city in the US, hands down. I think I would rate Boston as more livable, but I have more affection for NYC.
