Breintje has been acting weird this week: feeding frenzy, constantly looking and sniffing for food, trying to crawl everywhere where he isn’t allowed to be. When I petted him today a lot of fur came loose from his cheeks. Is it moult season already? We’re still having snow here. Or is it hair loss because of stress or diet?

There is no set moult season, but I just noticed Bam has started a shed. The days are getting longer and that does influence a bunny hormonally even if the bunny is neutered/spayed. (There are other light-influenced hormones than the sex hormones + there’s some testosterone-production by the adrenal glands.) Molly Varga mentioned this in a Webbinar I listened to last year. Perhaps Breintje is experiencing a bit of an early onset March hare-syndrome =)

Just wanted to add: Bam gave me a big scare today -wouldn’t eat, I had to give him gasdrops twice and have him sit in my lap for two hours. I took the opportunity to comb him and my goodness, he’s not just starting a shed, he’s in a full-blown molt. I removed a Bam-sized pile of hair from him. So I guess you could say molt season is here.

(Then he wanted food again, or we’d have taken him to the animal hospital. He was never lethargic. I suspect gas -GI upset is common when bun’s molt.)

Youch, that’s scary indeed. Keep on eating Bam!
Breintje has one of these GI episodes every moult, probably because he’s ingesting all the hair. Time to get the combs and brushes out!

Chew’s full-on moulting, and we don’t even have proper seasons. It’s all in the light. Unfortunately, he refuses to let me brush him anymore. I have to pluck him like a chicken with my bare hands every week (or twice a day when he’s moulting) LOL
