Most effective antibiotic for ear infections

Moshu’s vet is out of town till the 9th of coming month. I am actually not sure if Moshu is scratching her ears and shaking her head because of ear mites or infection. I can see some whiteish/greyish/creamish colored wax in the insides of her ear through a torch. She shakes her head before scratching but never otherwise. 

I can either wait for her vet to come back or take her to another vet on Monday. She was recently given Ivermectin shots for flee treatment but maybe I should get her another for these ear mites that might have started their infestation only in the last few days.

How are we supposed to get the sample for culture test in case of ear infections ? I am pretty sure the standard medicine they will prescribe here for any bacterial infection would be Enrofloxacin. But just in case it doesnt work I would like to opt for culture tests. 

In your experience and/or knowledge, what are the more and the least effective medicines in case of ear infections (for example, in case of intestinal infections, sulfa drugs are preferred over the common abs – enrofloxacin/ciprofloxacin – I remember reading that somewhere )

The ivermectin should help if there are ear mites. I wouldn’t get more at this point as it’s possible to overdose with too many consecutive doses. I don’t think ivermectin is effective against fleas though.

Enrofloxacin is probably the safest antibiotic to start with if there’s an ear infection. I think the issue sometimes is that it’s not given for long enough. Sometimes antibiotics need to be given for at least a month or longer to truly treat an ear infection. Also, an anti-inflammatory like metacam can help.

Hopefully all is well and it was just loose debris irritating her.

I f she had Ivermectin very recently, I doubt she could’ve developed an overt mite-infestation so soon after. ‘Mites generally need a little time to multiply before the bunny shows symptoms.

I know I’ve said it to you before, but in case others are reading the thread: Do not under any circumstances use Frontline (Fipronil) for mites. It can be deadly for rabbits.

The whitish wax in your buns ear sounds like exudate which is a yucky mix of pus and wax that sometimes accompanies ear infections, especially prolonged or frequent. The ear produces all this goop as a way of protecting itself.

As for antibiotic, the most effective med can be determined only by finding out what type of bacteria you are dealing with. By far, most of Bindis infections have been remedied with Baytril but there were some that needed different meds because the particular bacteria was resistant to Baytril.

If there’s a middle ear infection with an intact tympanic membrane, you can’t get a sample unless you puncture the eardrum. Which may be needed in some cases and not needed in other. If you can’t do a culture you treat empirically, by likelihood of infectious agent.
