There’s no magic bullet  BUT you can make one!!

What do you mix for  litter? I mix yesterdays’ news, carefreash and alpine shavings, at home and at the shelter. It seems to stretch out use !! What do you guys use?

Why don’t you use wood stove pellets? I think they are the most affordable and the most odor resistant and it would be MUCH easier to just use one litter for all those litter boxes.

or horse bedding! you volunteer at a horse rescue, so i’m sure they’re readily available in your area. i think that’d make much more sense…

Yes, or horse bedding which is what I use – it’s basically the same concept as the wood stove pellets.

i mix Sunseed (basically same concept as yesterday’s news, but somewhat softer) and Soft-Sorbent (the lavendar kind mixed with the plain), 2 parts Sunseed with 1 part Soft-Sorbent blend, and use a healthy bit of hay over the top. The mixing keeps the lavendar from presenting any respiratory concerns for Checkers, but it’s so much softer than the Sunseed. i only use enough litter to just coat the bottom of the litter tray, and use hay over top.

Not been able to find wood stove anywhere! Horses bed in straw at our shelter and they aren’t housed indoors either so no horse bedding! But….we could certainly buy some-is it as absorbant as yesterdays news or no?

i have not used it personally, but i’m guessing it is very absorbent. remember, it’s designed for use with horses, and i’m sure they pee much more than bunnies… lol!

for soem reason, Mike is absolutely ANTI-horse bedding. we have a place that sells it 30 minutes away. he refuses to “let me” go buy it, even tho we’d save insane amounts of money. i don’t know… i think he thinks that once we start using horse bedding, it’ll be all down hill from there… lol. like there’d be nothing stopping me from getting 10 more buns…?

I buy the horse bedding in 40 pound sacks. It is basically the same stuff as the wood stove pellets, except that the pellets are not as large and tend to be more crumbly. When the pee comes into contact with the pellets, they disintegrate into sawdust, and the sawdust absorbs the liquid. I still use the Aspen Supreme in their primary litter box (the one under the hay rack that gets the most use) and for the additional boxes I use the horse stall product.

exactly:   we have 300 POUNDS of litter, it doesn’t make “sense” to NOT get more bunnies!  how else will we go thru…  300 POUNDS OF LITTER?!
