I won’t be able to get Revolution for coco to get rid of the mites until early December, so until then can I somehow control them from going crazy. Right now they’re very very mild. Can I brush him with a fine tooth comb maybe or do a deep cleaning in his room? I’m also not able to go to the vet.

Diatomaceous Earth! *EDIT: Make sure it is Food Grade. This is listed on the bag. If it is for use in pools/cleaning, do not use it.*

This link on site says it is dangerous. I use it sparingly when needed and have had it recommended by pocket vets, breeders, shelters and sanctuaries soooo….as with all bunny related activity: It miggggght kiiiiiilllll themmmmmm !!!!

“I know some pet rescuers who are afraid DE will dehydrate the bunny if you put it on its skin to kill fur mites. However, there is overwhelming info and testimonies explaining that such sharp shreds are so tiny that they only bother insects (scratching their waxy cover and thus making them lose hydration through those scratches and as a result they die). However, the size of such sharp particles is so small, it will not harm an animal or humans. If it was, then many would use it to kill  mice and rats.”

It is light and sticks to everything so do it in the tub or outside in your “messy clothes”.

The minute one of my buns itches I rub a couple teaspoons’ worth into their fur and ears (not in the ears) for two mornings in a row and again if they itch again.

A bag at a pet store or even garden supply store costs between $10-20 and lasts for every time they seem ‘mitey’. Also, sprinkle a couple spoons of it in their litter for a week.

I am comfortable with other homeopathic remedies and my buns respond well to them but they have mixed assertions/disclaimers from various bunny expert sources, so I won’t recommend them but this is one that works so well for me, my friends and vet and it is well supported.

Why can’t you get him to a vet? Or at least speak with a vet and get a prescription for some treatment? Maybe if you send photos, you won’t necessarily have to take your rabbit in.

Why are you unable to buy Revolution until December? I’m often finding myself confused because my vet office will simply allow you to buy it at the front desk. Apparently this isn’t how it works everywhere because people have said that the vet wants to see the bunny for the problem first. If I need Revolution though, I can just ask for it. No appointment necessary. It might be worth a try to call the vet office and ask if you can buy it.

As for diatomaceous earth… yes, it is non-toxic. But use caution with that stuff. It’s recommended that it is used for carpets and living areas when bunny is not in the room. The reason is because the powder is very fine and, if inhaled, can cause irritation of the lungs and airways. I know some people use it directly on their bunny and there seem to be no ill effects, but I personally wouldn’t want to risk it.
