Minor setback, need advice!

Long story short, I called the vet to make Quincy’s neuter appointment on 7/24. The appointment was confirmed by the receptionist for 8/25. He’ll be 4 months. I called yesterday to add on a nail trim while he’s under for the surgery (I’ve tried myself, but he wont sit still), and they could not find any record of my appointment, and informed me that they don’t even perform surgeries on Friday. I was aggravated because I had already taken the day off work. Anyway, they informed me that I could drop him off on Thursday, 8/24 at 8am and they could still fit him in, but since I work at 8am and I can’t drop him off any earlier than that, they said I could drop him off at 6pm the night before. 

What do you guys think? I am a bit bothered by leaving him alone at the vet throughout the night before the surgery. I feel like it would just be mean, not to mention stressful for him. It would be really great to get this out of the way, since I don’t know when I can take another off day. Do you guys think this is too much to put him through? They said they keep bunnies in a “Recovery” area and they won’t be housed with dogs.

I think I probably would, if that’s the only appointment you can get for a while. I would just make sure to bring stuff from home, like a blanket or something from his cage and his food bowl.

Stuff with your scent may be nice. A shirt you wear, your pillow case, etc.. it will help him feel at ease.

If hes away from dogs and loud noises, he should be ok. Definitely bring some of his items and food of course. The others suggesting an item that smells like you should do wonders for his comfort as well

My boys were required to be left at the vet. At first I was apprehensive, but it was for the best. They took good care of them and made sure they were eating, drinking, and their incisions were okay. I work full time and takw grad classes full time, so having to stay home a whole day to monitor them would’ve been a challenge. I think it worked out best to have them stay. The price on the other hand ?

Yes, definitely bring a “bunny bag” for your boy. Hay, pellets, his favorite greens, and something that smells like you.

I was asked to do the same thing. The tech said Chewie flopped out on my scarf and snoozed for most of the night. LOL

How frustrating for you that they didn’t have it on record that you booked a month in advance, especially since you planned this out according to when you could take a day off. I also understand you want him neutered as soon as possible, what with the separated living set up. Waiting another few weeks is a big hindrance and set back for all you have planned.

I’d leave him overnight as they suggested. And bring all his stuff in with him – litter tray, hay, food etc. bowls.. everything that familiarizes him with home.
Plus a shirt or some item of clothing of yours, as already mentioned. He’ll be fine, and he’ll be neutered – yay – and then you can take him home after work. It will all be over in a short period of time.

Thanks you guys!! I was sitting on the floor with him last night and became overwhelmed at the thought of leaving him alone in an unfamiliar place!

This vet offers the drop off the night before and a stay the night after for observation for free. While I think is a nice courtesy to have the day after observation, I don’t think I will have him stay the night there on Friday. I am confident that I can watch after him and I think that staying afterward would just be unnecessary additional stress when I can bring him home and set him in his cage with a nice warm comforter. And no one will bother him! No doubt that’s more comfy than the vet!

Since he is staying the night, I’ll send some extra hay. I’ll be a really nice mom and send him with a whole slew of what we have on hand: timothy, alfalfa, orchard and oat! And herbs! I’ll send him with his blanket, stuffy, and something of mine- maybe a scarf as Q8 said! They said I could bring his own litter tray if I want to, so that will be familiar. And there are heating pads in the “cages” so if he gets chilly he can warm up! I feel a little bit better knowing these things. I never thought to ask about bringing his own trays and such!

Yeah, most vets don’t keep boys after a neuter as the majority of them are just fine.
