Mice

Hello everyone!

We have seemed to have attracted tiny baby mice into the room where my bun buns are.
Now I am worried cause I know mice can carry disease but I don’t know if my buns can get diseases from them? My buns are in giant dog kennels so nice would be able to get in easily. Actually I saw a tiny baby mouse go sit by one of my bund today (who treated the mouse as its pet lol) Obviously I do not want my buns to get into mouse traps so it’s hard to put down dangerous traps (cause even if I could pick them up before I let them out there’s always the sneaky bunny that escaped its cage that I would have to worry about.

Any suggestions To Help me rid the room of these little guys safely? Also how much of a danger are they to the buns?

Im not sure if they can or not, but the mice could still cause fights over food fi they are hungry enough, which could land your bunnies with some scratches or bites. When there is one, there will be more, and more, and more… If you want to do traps, you can google safe mouse traps or get some live traps from walmart or the like

A safe trap ive used before in an old house was a make shift one with a bucket, a cut wire hanger long enough to balance on the bucket top, and some honey. You put the bucket right side up and put the wire hanger balanced over it. Wipe some honey over the middle of the wire. If you dont have honey, you can put an empty toilet paper roll with pellets/dried corn/hay inside of it. The honey and the toilet paper roll works to get the mices attention, they try to get it, but end up falling into the bucket and cant get out. This might not work in your rabbit room, but if you can get it somewhere near the room where the rabbits cant get to it, it might work

Can you find where the mice are getting into the house? Look for droppings and anything chewed. Under cabinets in the kitchen are popular entry spots.

Also, put your bunnies’ food in a mouse-proof container if you haven’t already. I don’t really think they’ll go near the bunnies to get the food, but they will get to any food in a bag.

Mice aren’t really spooked by light, but they do most of their scavenging at night. If it doesn’t bother your buns, you could leave the light on in their room.

I had a mouse at a rental in college. I caught him sitting on top of my (bridge) bunnny’s food in a dark pantry. I moved her food. To my knowledge, he never bothered her. Though he liked to aggravate the cat. I really couldn’t do much to block entry because that house was ninety years old. It wasn’t an issue for us, but we didn’t have multiple baby mice. I’m sure there were others, but this particular mouse wasn’t scared of the cat.

I always got live traps for mice, since they are harmless to the bunnies if they happen to access the traps. Basically they are just plastic rectangular boxes. You put the bait in one end (peanut butter is best) and place the trap against the wall (mice travel along walls). Try to put it where the rabbits can’t get it because it the trap is pushed around by curious little bunny noses, it will close and be useless for catching mice. The only drawback to this option is that you must take the live mice at least a couple miles away from your home to release them, which is inconvenient. If you just let them go in your back yard, they will come right back into your house lol. And leaving the mice in the traps for hours on end is inhumane. What I did is keep a bucket with small holes punched in the lid, put some shredded toilet paper or any paper product in the bucket, plus some birdseed or nuts/cereal/pasta for the mice to eat and a bottlecap with water in it. I put it in my basement, and that way each time I caught a mouse, I would just pop it into the bucket and relocate it when it was convenient for me, and meanwhile the mouse/mice would be safe and happy. Much better than 3am trips to find a suitable place to drop off my rodenty guest ?!

At first I put the traps under the cabinet edge in an area of the kitchen where the rabbits hardly ever went. However, once a mouse was caught, they were apparently overwhelmed with curiousity and managed to drag the mouse trap out. I woke up to all kind of racket, and went out to find them pushing the trap around the kitchen. Poor mouse! After that I kept it out of reach of the bunnies ?.
