In the last year we have had 2-3 mice in our house. And earlier this week we heard 1-2 running around in our ceiling downstairs ( you would think with five cats you wouldn’t have this problem). But just today I saw this brown/black looking thing running in the kitchen by the fridge out of the corner of my eye and I told my mom, she was like no the cat would have gotten it. but then about 2 hours later she heard a noise coming from the kitchen and she thinks it was a mouse, so we think they are in there. ( yuck) ![]()
So anyways of coarse I am freaking out, I am so afraid some sort of disease is going to get to the buns or they will get in my room. So can they get sick from mice?![]()
I don’t think so. I doubt that a little mouse would go near your rabbits.
lol, yeah I know i am just freaked out.
aw, don’t worry. Chances are those little mousies are far more afraid of you than you are of them.
I would venture so far as to say most houses have critters – mice, rats, squirrels, or a combination of all three! Most of them are too subtle to be heard or discovered, however.
If you’re interested, there are humane traps that you can buy, and sometimes even rent from shelters, to catch the mice and release them outside.
: )
yeah I am not sure what were going to do. I am not a fan of mice though! lol.
I like mice! I think they are awfully cute (at least as pets). I wouldn’t mind having a little fancy one someday. I rescued a REW one once that had a litter of babies – they were really cute. I was a bit afraid of them but liked watching them.
when we had gerbils,, we knew in a second if one escaped because all the bunnies would just start thumping like crazy.
Little mousies are soooooo cute! The poor little things are probably scared to death. Just get a live trap, catch them, and release them outside somewhere away from your house.
Funny you say the longhairmike, I once had a cute teddy bear hamster that kept escaping and my rabbits did the same thing. I finally figured out how to make her cage escape proof. I forgot about that. She only had one eye so I don’t think she could have harmed them – they would have more likely accidentally injured her.
We had some in my parents’ house after we moved in with them….so they blamed the bunnies. We haven’t had any since, but the bunnies were completely unharmed. I read that the dirty litter/poop can attract them, they’ll even ingest it because it’s nutritious to them… They also like hay/fur and nesting materials..so be sure it’s cleaned up as best as you can. But regardless, it happens. Try not to worry too much. Like I said, my buns were fine!
Although one of the mice freaked Oreo out a bit, we realized she was really interested in getting under the entertainment center, then shortly after realized the mouse was hiding underneath!
pet mice are very cute and they don’t bother me, but when you know that these could have diseases and they are running around your house, I don’t like them.
Lol I have mice too, one of the joys of living in the country! I have 2 cats in the house and the only one that catches them is the only one that is declawed!!
I had to rearrange my kitchen because of the little stinkers, and I HATE using mousetraps. I had to move my siverware the one time because they were getting in that drawer a lot, and scrubbing silverware is one of the things I hate to begin with let alone cleaning the whole drawer! Thankfully we tore those drawers out to make room for a dishwasher and haven’t had a whole lot of trouble with them in the kitchen. Unfortunately they seem to be getting caught in our bedroom a lot more (as if that is any consolation)!
We’ve had some mice in the house, and caught them. They didn’t appear to ever hurt Dutchess, although she was up on her wheels in her habitat.
Mocha, I’ve had a couple come in the house recently also. They’re attracted to the hay in the shed then seem to venture inside. I’ve had to chuck a bit of hay already. I actually suspect this is where Jersey & Rumball got the mites from as my vet said it’s usually via mice and rats. BUT mine go outdoors alot too and if there are critters in the yard that carry mites, they could have gotten them this way too. Just seemed a coincidence.
I agree, they are very cute. I watched a tiny one squeezing into such a small space and saw it’s head pop out elsewhere seconds later. I thought it’s fur was like a castor rex bunny. Lol. Part of my problem is not being able to trap them as I can’t stomach conventional traps. I’ve been putting peppermint oil on cotton balls in areas I don’t want them and this has worked somewhat. I’m also getting hold of a humane trap.
my complex has mice, i hardly ever see them but when i do see one he’s very tiny and adorable. i mean sure he’s probably got the black plague but…
one came out and was a bit bolder right after i got banjo. but he didn’t go anywhere near her, he just came out of his hiding place and walked around. i’m not that worried he’ll give banjo a disease because i think the chance of him biting banjo is about zero, but the facilities people do treatments sometimes, pest control, and i’m worried THEY’ll do something that could make BJ sick. but if i refuse to let them treat the place, i’m worried the mouse problem will get worse.
oh, well, i should have gotten rich so i could live in a mansion and pay people to take care of these problems.
Jerseygirl: My bunny’s went to the vet last week and got treated for mites. They couldn’t tell for sure if they had them but they treated them for it and it looks like lulu is getting better so it must have been mites. The vet said that mites can live on rabbits for a long time before you can tell there there, so they could have gotten them from there mother. So who knows.
My mom had a rat problem this past 2 weeks as well. she saw a white one with some gray on it. Must have been a pet that got out.
They are gone now she feels better.
I live by a river, so every winter mice tend to come in the house. I’ve never had any ill effects for my animals, but I sure hate cleaning up and catching all those little guys! (I use live traps and let them go back at the river…so their great great grandkids can find their way back next winter, I’m sure! XD )
