Carmela got a boyfriend! I introduced myself and Carmela (the rex) here before The Big Forum Update.

Carmela was spayed and she recovered really quickly. Six weeks later we went to visit Marcy at SaveABunny for a speed dating session. Carmela and this big white fella (the second bun she met) were instantly… well… uninterested in each other. But apparently that’s good in the bunny dating world.

I spent a couple of hours watching them ignore and then sniff at each other. By the time I left they were laying near each other and Carmela had convinced “Bieber” to lick her head at least twice. I decided to board them at the rescue for 2 days so Marcy could keep and eye on them and to give them more time to bond on neutral ground.

“Bieber” is a big ol’ albino New Zealand rabbit. He was being raised as a meat rabbit at the time of his rescue..  You can read about his rescue in this article.

Peter (yes, we renamed him) is a shy guy. But he has adjusted well to our home. He still stays in their pen a lot. He ventures out and will occasionally do a binky before he runs back to the safety of his litter box. He is pretty easy to pick up and hold, and so I try to have a little alone time with him every day. He really seems to benefit from it. He is such a contrast to Carmela’s “open this gate, I want to run around and see if there are any doors you forgot to close!!!” attitude. That girl has ADHD.

The only habit he has picked up from Carmela so far is the way they come running when they hear the bag of freeze dried bananas coming out of the pantry. He loses all inhibition and comes barreling towards me along with her. It’s pretty adorable!

We’re so happy to have him and Carmela is too. Now if we can just get him to stop pooping and shedding EVERYWHERE

Congrats on your new addition. Peter is beautiful. Im a big REW fan too. IMO, Theres nothing more beautiful than a big, white ruby-eyed bunny. Good call on the renaming.

Looking forward to more pictures of the happy couple.

Yay I’m so glad these two buns have found each other! They’re both so cute and make an even cuter couple. I agree with LPT, on the name changing. Would’ve done the same thing in your case. Congrats!

Aw, the happy couple had their first scuffle this morning after more than a month of wedded bliss. We heard a rumbling early this morning and ran over to find tufts of hair EVERYWHERE, Carmela looks a mess with clumps of hair sticking out of her at every end and poor Peter has a gash on his nose. Peter seems to have found some courage from somewhere because he’s acting kind of bossy and that’s so unlike him! Are scuffles normal or should I be worried?

Uhoh, it can happen. How are they now? Where did it happen? In their pen?

I called Marcy at SaveABunny and she said some of it sounds like there is something that is bothering them (they are both thumping, which is not like them), but I don’t know what it is, since we haven’t moved anything or brought anything in. I know Carmela doesn’t like it when I move furniture, but I haven’t lately. Marcy suggested a long, bumpy, windy car ride. And so I took them out for that and when we got back I cleaned their cage and switched out all the blankets, tunnels and toys before I put them back in. As of right now they are both lying down in the big cardboard tunnel. We’ll see what the day brings..

Hopefully they will be okay. Sometimes I find it impossible to really know what my rabbits are thinking…it could have been a noise or a shadow or just about anything else, especially since you weren’t there when they had their tiff. Sounds like they are so far so good now.
