This is the horse that I have been riding for lessons. Sky is a 4 year old Paint/Draft Cross.
My dream horse at this point is an Appaloosa gelding (or easy going mare) with the typical blanket/spotted rear.

Oh wow…beautiful. How fun you are taking lessons!
what a gorgeous horse!
Gorgeous!! What type of riding do you do? How long have you been riding?
Beautiful. I’ve only been on a horse once and it was pretty scary to me because you are up so darn high…hard to believe this I know since I live in Texas. I don’t mind petting them though.
Awww look at those eyes! Bet he’s a gentle boy ![]()
OHMYGOD katnip! he is so gorgeous! english or western? i LOVE LOVE LOVE him!
^^ give him CARROTS FOR ME! (((CARROTS TO SKY)))
I have been riding Western- and I think I will stick with Western mainly. I think I am more interested in trail rides and casual riding than any pressure of showing English or Western.
wetern… i have always wanted to try that. well i did once in pony camp…but i was 5, so i dont remember much. i have never been on a trail ride and i am dying too! have you yyet? its sounds so fun and relaxing….
^^my mom has spent her life w/ horses. she knows a good one when she sees it and she says sky is fantastic! just by the look on his face and body type and all so sky’s got fans!
What a beautiful horse!!! ![]()
Is it strange that the first though that came to mind when I saw his coloring was “Hey, its a dutch horsie!” ? lol
That is a gorgeous horse!! I used to have an Arabian that I rode all the time a few years ago. Horses are not cheap hobbies unfortuately. I did word at the stables feeding and taking care of other horses to pay for her board and feed and that made it much easier for me. Riding is such a fun hobby. I am happy for you. Riding is very good therapy, for me it was anyhow!
HEY GUYS, SINCE I SEEN THIS THREAD ON HORSES, IT REMINDED ME THAT I STILL HAD THIS PICTURE OF ME AND CHARM. SHE WAS A 14 YEAR OLD ARABIAN THAT I WAS ABLE TO BUY WITH PAPERS AND TACK FROM A FRIEND FOR $800!! I ALSO RIDE WESTERN. RIDING ENGLISH, WELL, I CAME OFF MORE WHEN I WAS LEARNING AND MY FRIEND CALLED ME “THE AMAZING RUBBER WOMAN” BECAUSE I NEVER GOT HURT WHEN I HIT THE GROUND. SHE WAS ONLY 14 HANDS SO AT LEAST IT WAS NOT FAR TO FALL. MY FRIEND BOUGHT ANOTHER ARAB SO THAT IS WHY I WAS ABLE TO BUY HER AT SUCH A GREAT PRICE.
Katnip-I vote you try English. I find the saddle SOOOO much more comfortable ![]()
That is true. It is like going braless.
What a gorgeous horse! I love Paints! I have an 8 year old Morgan mare whom I ride English. I’ve been riding English for 18 years and I do get on Western once in a while for fun and it feels WEIRD!!! Like I have no security in that big saddle! I would love to have a nice Western Pleasure horse to learn Western but my mare is of saddleseat blood so she doesn’t exactly make Western comftorable!
I want to own my own horse so, so bad! I can’t wait until I get more experience and feel that I am in a position to buy a horse that will “fit” me for a long time. I would not do well with buying a horse, riding for a year or 2 and then wanting to advance to another level and need a different horse. Unless I sold it to someone at the same barn I would be heartbroken- and I can afford board and care for one horse- but would not even want to consider 2 horses!
I think Appaloosas as so lovely- the ones with the spotted rears- in any color really. I think Paints are gorgeous. But I am also a huge fan of Quarter Horses- especially grulla and dark grey/dappled grey. I don’t know why I torture myself like this- I look at all the horses for sale- and I know I am not ready to make the commitment of buying- lessons and leasing- yes, buying-no. It is such a commitment that I take it really seriously. But the Michigan economy is terrible- and horse prices are low as horses are usually the first “luxury” to go in financial hardship times.
I’m gonna ditto K&K that English is so much more comfortable! At least for me. I know the mantra is that western is the most comfortable, but, honestly, it hurts my butt and my knees a lot. I can sit in an english saddle all day and be comfortable. And I rode for years (jumpers mostly) without ever showing or feeling pressure, so don’t be afraid to branch out (even within western) and try new disciplines. If you don’t show, you’re really just working towards your own (and your horse’s) goals. I love that aspect of riding that allows you to always be moving towards higher goals.
But you’re so lucky that you’re even in the position to buy one day! I have wanted a horse since I was very very small, and at this time in my life it’s not even on my radar. With board prices here I could never afford one, so just consider yourself lucky that you can get one in the somewhat near future. I, for one, am jealous! 🙂 And I can’t wait to see pics of the appy you buy one day 😉
::crave::
Katnip-I just thought of two tips for owning
1) Board is cheaper for ‘pasture’ board then ‘stall’ boarding. So if you don’t mind catching your horse in the field rather then inside in a stall you can often pay less then half of stall board and still get all the benefits of boaring-horse care plus access to the arena etc.
2) BE CAREFUL buying painted/colored horses-appaloosa, grulla etc. MANY people breed for color with no regard to conformation. So always have your instructor and a vet come look at the horse before you buy it (this is always a good idea anyways) because the horse may have major conformation problems making him likely to be lame or broken down at a young age -or even completely unridable-because he was bred with no regard for health and build and just regard for horses who throw color foals
Another two cents for you ![]()
