        Hey guys…quick Q here….

I am perplexed about the conversion of cc’s (cubic centimeters) and ml’s (milliliters). I have a syringe with ml on in, and I am supposed to dose in cc. Are they actually the same measurement?

I went to these sites, and this is what they seem to indicate, but since they aren’t vet sites, I wasn’t sure it would be the same measurement when considering the difference between a human child and a rabbit.

        http://www.drhull.com/EncyMaster/M/measurement.html

        http://ezinearticles.com/?Injections—How-Much-is-an-ml,-cc,-IU?&id=149809

Poor Mimzy just sneezed up a drop of goop out of his nose (I had to wipe it up off the floor, that’s the only reason I saw it in time, before he licked it up, so I hope he hasn’t been doing this all along!) and it looks like anything that would come out of my own nose during allergy season, perhaps just a tinge of yellow color and it looks like it also contains a hair or fiber or something…so before I panic and make a new appointment for him to see the vet for a blood draw, I figure I’d best try the Benadryl first.

Doc said .8 cc’s twice a day (and that was for the 25mg – 5ml strength, I’ve got half that-12.5 mg – 5ml) I just don’t want to overdose my bunny.

        Thankies!

ml and cc are the same measurement. so you would dose 1.6 ml if you have half strength medicine.

Mimz, here is a drug dosage calculator specifically for rabbits:

Yes, .8cc’s is the same as .8ml’s.

That dosage chart can be very confusing though – I think it’s best to call a vet.

Just remember that Benadryl can cause drowsiness.  But as long as the drowsiness is acceptable- still eating, etc- continue the dosing as prescribed- the pet often gets used to the dosage and it does not make them as drowsy.

Just like humans- when they first take Benadryl it can make them very tired- (Benadryl is the additional ingredient in many “PM” medication such as Tylenol PM, etc).  But once you take it for awhile it usually does not “knock you out” like when you first start taking it.

Obviously be sure to keep your vet up to date on Mimzy’s reaction to it and if it makes him drowsy or not- but that is a common side effect.  And Benadryl Childrens does come in quite a few different flavors so hopefully you will find one that Mimzy likes.

Benadryl is commonly used to treat allergic reactions to other things, environment, meds, etc-  and the nice thing about that is that it is tolerated very well by pets- other than initial drowsiness- and is considered to be safe enough to be sold over the counter.  I think the dosage does have a range- but even a high dose will more likely cause “excitability” than a severe toxic reaction.  I myself can not take 2 Benadryl as it makes me feel weird- my joints feel funny and I can not get comfortable, but 1 pill can make me sleepy.

Thank you Sarita. Well, I couldn’t find the ingredient in Benadryl on that chart, but I gave it a shot by looking up dosages for Tylenol or aspirin. I was already aware that things like Tylenol can’t be given to cats or dogs and it’s good to know that bunnies shouldn’t have it either. (the drop down warns you not to use it, but to substitute aspirin) No worries, though, I would still rather talk with my vet first before giving anything I am not sure of.

Thank you also, Katnip. That is interesting about your sensitivity to Benadryl. I’ve had to take it regularly for years and especially during chemo treatments. I don’t think I’ve had a reaction like that myself, but I only take 2 Benadryl when my allergies are raging (which will probably be starting any week now…*groan* ) and I often use one Tylenol PM for sleep and it works great…the only caveat being be prepared for me to be a bit of a grump the next day. Funny how a good night’s sleep only makes me crabbier afterwards. >_<

Since Mimzy hasn’t done any more sneezing (I tried the Oxbow Basic T pellets last night and he seemed to enjoy them and yet had no nasal troubles!) and the drop of goop I swept up didn’t turn bright yellow or green upon drying on the tissue, I’m going to wait to use the Benadryl for now…but it’s good to know what strength I need to use and what I can expect. (I can’t imagine Mimzy being any more ‘sleepy’ than he already is…I think this stuff would just about turn him comatose!) Hopefully whatever was bothering him was that hair/fiber/whatever that I found in that bogey and he’ll feel better now. They all have to go in within the next week or so for nail trims, so I’ll follow up with the vet at that time.

As far as my other thread concerning Mimzy’s breathing distresses…looks like Dana Krempels is on vacation and won’t be back till after 2-9…so I’m pretty much stuck for now.
Fortunately, Mimzy seems to be doing well today also. I am hoping it was the particular brand of pellets that were annoying him.

Grace sneezed a little bit of bunny snot on Brian a few days ago… she gets an irritated nose sometimes if the Timothy hay is extra dusty, but she usually recovers from it pretty quickly. I hope Mimzy is feeling better soon!
