Meadow Gold Pellets – Australian Members

I came across this pellet brand online last week. Meadow Gold Fibre Pellets for Rabbits. At first glance they look pretty good!
Anyone use them?

Australian members would know it’s hard to find non-Lucerne based pellets here. Pretty much Oxbow Timothy pellets has been the only alternative and sets you back approx $20+ for a 2.5kg bag. So I was happy to discover an Australian made alternative.
They’re made with fescue hay and claim to be 28% crude fibre, 8% crude protein. Fat is a tad high at 3.5% but not too bad.

It seems to be around $20 for 8kg. Pricey compared to most bulk brands around. However, judging from nutritional info, it looks like a more superior pellet compared to most we have here.

That’s really good to know! Rufus is currently eating some generic pellets that I got from his breeder. I’ve seen them at Pet Barn too. He’s not a massive pellet eater so the bag has lasted forever. The content is not particularly good but I tried to switch him on to Oxbow and he was having nothing to do with them! So that’s $30 in the bin! I might see if I have any more luck with these Meadow Gold ones. Thanks for the tip!

I bought the meadow gold fibre pellets for my 2 Rexes from petstock.

we usually buy oxbow Timothy but it is so expensive! But having several unhealthy bunnies in the past from cheap food and a death of my last lop from diabetes from poor diet I am now extremely fussy what I feed them. The meadow gold has a slightly higher fat content then the oxbow but overall the nutritional info is very similar to the oxbow. It cost $20 for 8kg and the pellets themselves are larger, more crumbly then the oxbow. My buns weren’t too fussed at first but they are eating it without hesitation now. 

Overall you you can tell the oxbow is far superior in quality however, the nutritional value and price of these pellets are very appealing and definitely second to the oxbow but far superior of anything else I have found in Australia.

I have mixed the oxbow pellets with the meadow gold ones and my buns are eating it happily.

Are these pellet’s better in quality than the Peter’s pellets?

Because the Meadow gold and Momi pellets are made from grass hays it gives better fibre and lower protein. They are both more in line with what House Rabbit Society recommends. Most other pellets are Lucerne (including Peters). That’s good for young growing rabbits but you do have to be careful in how much adult rabbits get.

Mine have always been fed Lucerne pellets and seem healthy to me… I have a near 6 & 7 yr old rabbit now. Actually Lucerne pellets are not a bad idea for older buns too.

I definitely want to try alternatives though. Especially with one of mine that over produces cecals. I am happy to see some affordable alternatives now. I’m hopeful Peters will bring out a Timothy pellet as they already do Timothy hay.

That’s good to know – my bun is young at the moment, so he is still on the lucerne pellets/hay/introduce veggie, but I’ll be looking for these later when he’s older.

Jerseygirl, where have you seen Peters Timothy Hay? I’ve only seen Peters Pasture Hay in Woolies.

I don’t really remember . Maybe petcafe? I don’t got to petstores very often so it would have been a while ago.
I don’t know the price either but I’m guessing expensive.. I’d honestly just feed oaten hay & the dollars saved could go toward other necessities & vet fees.
