May get a fourth Holland Lop

Gosh, I have been really contemplating getting a fourth Holland to round out my trio. Cheddar and Poopy are bonded and Meatball is kind of outcast, so I want to get him a friend. He is such a sweet boy and deserves love too. So I’m going on Sunday to possibly get another doe to be his girlfriend (maybe a blue tort). 

I’m scared of these situations:

• New doe bonds with Cheddar and Poopy and Meatball is again a loner.
• Poopy hates new doe and bullies her too. She bullies Meatball all the time and is the dominant bunny.
• All bunnies hate each other.
• Meatball and new girlfriend don’t bond.

Any insights to having four buns and especially two bonded pairs? Can they all live in the same cage? My trio currently lives in the same cage, but have their tiffs.

Well, I have 4 buns, one pair… but my god does Moose hate the girls.

You may end up having 2 pairs that need to live separately.

I think it sounds most likely that you’ll have two pairs living separately. I remember Petzy’s attempts to bond a trio and they were not easy, plus she did seem to have one left out so it’s no guarantee that Meatball wouldn’t be an outcast anyway. If you have the space for two pairs, I think it could be great for him to have his own friend, but it’ll definitely make things much harder to have two setups.

Can you take meatball on dates so he can find someone he likes?

I really want them all to live in one cage…like a super cage. 

I am going to bring all my buns on Sunday to let them choose one. Most importantly, Poopy has to like her lol. She is the queen.

Well, if you’re getting a 4th for the purpose of Meatball having a friend, then it really doesn’t matter what Poopy thinks.

Are you only meeting with Holland Lops? Maybe a bunny that ends up being another breed might fit well with your three?

I dunno, I’m still iffy about the whole thing *if* you’re set on having them live together. I think there are good chances that the bonding will be extremely difficult and take forever, or that you’ll bond them and Meatball will still be the odd man out.

There may always be a loner in the group – larger group dynamics are definitely different the larger the group. There is always one that will be weaker and always one that will be the alpha rabbit. So in that respect I agree with Elrohwen.

I’ve thought more about this. Meatball and Poopy seemed to get along last night. They laid together outside twice. So I am still going on Sunday to look at some does, but not sure if I will get one. I think it would be good to see how Meatball and Poopy interact with another bunny. Cheddar doesn’t care.

I also think it would be a good bonding experience to drive my trio all there together to bond them more during the car ride.

I can’t resist hollands either, so I certainly can’t fault you for that! When we were looking for a second we only wanted another lop (ended up with a mini though) and some people thought we were crazy, but we just love them.

Good luck on your search. I do think that Meatball could be really happy having his own girlfriend – I know you don’t want two separate cages, but if you do think Meatball is being picked on (sounds like he’s just being ignored for now) it’s something to consider.

Gosh, I got another Holland this past Sunday. I am so happy and she’s so adorable. She’s opal and her name is Noodle. Pics coming soon.

Gahh, I wanted to get like three more when I got Noodle! Those Holland lop faces are just too adorable. There were some that looked just like Cheddy and I wanted to get a Cheddy #2.
