        Hi all,

I came home this morning after being out for the 4th to a matted fur ball outside my bun’s cage. I’m really not sure what it could be. It’s not her first 4th of July, and I don’t remember her being stressed out from fireworks last year, but could it be that she pulled out her fur? It’s a rather large ball, probably the size of her tail, though she’s a Netherland Dwarf so it’s not too big.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I’ve attached pictures below. Thanks in advance.

Hey Melissa. What fur balls you have there!

If I remember correctly, your rabbit is not spayed, correct? If that’s still the case, female rabbits who are not spayed can go through false pregnancies, where they pull out their fur for nesting purposes. Falsee pregnancies, to my knowledge, can be somewhat stressful for female rabbits, so it’s recommended to spay female rabbits. More importantly than the stress of false pregnancies is the very high chance of uterine cancer for unfixed female rabbits (upwards to 80% according to some sources).

Another potential is as you mention, stress. Is she showing signs of being lonely or bored?

And lastly, a user once posted about lots of fur present in their rabbit’s cage, and it ended up being that the rabbit’s teeth were too long and when the rabbit would groom, it would actually accumulate a lot of fur in its mouth until it eventually fell out like a ball. How is your rabbit’s hay-eating?

So sorry I never got notified of your response. Still not sure what the fur balls are from, but we took her to the vet for a check up and her teeth were fine and we will be getting her spayed very soon. In the mean time, the fur balls have stopped so all is well! Thanks!
