You guys are not going to believe what Leopold just did! I can’t believe his is THAT smart. I heard clunking in their room so I went to check it out. I found Leopold standing on top of the cardboard cat scratcher and he was reaching up with his paws to the seat of the desk chair. I had bought them a new bag of pellets and just tossed it in the chair in there (I was being lazy). Well, it appears as though he moved the cardboard cat scratcher (hence the clunking as he picked up on end and dropped it to the floor) with the intention of using it as a little step stool so he could (almost) reach the chair.

something weird is happening…

i don’t like dance music (at least not since my debbie gibson tape in 7th grade) and i have no interest in dancing, but something about this dude’s weird dance videos put you in a happy carefree trancelike state of childhood wonder. It’s like the equivalent of teletubbies for an adult audience.

I have three more weeks of school! After that is spring break, then onto my externship. I am kind of nervous!

Right now in class, I am learning how to do EKGs. It isn’t too bad at all, hooking the person up to the machine is time consuming (the damn leads) but otherwise the test is simple, as long as the patient does not move or squeal around while the test is running (it can cause artifacts, or a false reading).

We’re having a cool snap – 62 degrees now and getting cooler for the weekend. It’s been unseasonably warm here in S. FL so I am enjoying it. Literally a breath of fresh air. It’s all what you’re used to I guess.

Ugh, it’s been in the 20’s and 30’s here. It REALLY suckssss.

So my meeting with the Humane Society went awesome! They decided to bring me on to their Volunteer Advisory Committee to help the staff address these issues. They were very willing to listen and I’m really happy how everything panned out. They even went as far to ENFORCE that every employee attend a Bunny Romp. And interact with them on a bunny-to-human basis so they can see more and get acquainted with these little/big guys instead of everyone being so nervous and scared around them! Work your magic bunnies! They always do.

Hope everyone is doing good! The BF made a chicken stock today and is making some Arroz con Pollo tonight for dinner and I’m making Cooks Illustrated’s recipe for the best chocolate chip cookies! And then tomorrow I’m making some Chicken Noodle Soup with the new chicken stock he made! And hopefully some home-made bread and home-made applesauce!

Things with me are okay I suppose. I’m having a lot of difficulty with my thesis topic and it seems like my committee wants nothing to do with me. But otherwise I suppose things are fine. My husband is insane and making all sorts of noise down in the basement. The rabbits don’t seem too phased. So if anyone wants to know how rabbits react to jackhammering beneath their feet…

It’s a warm day down here again despite being the 3rd day of Autumn, nearly to the 100F mark again and going to stay that way most of the week, the slithery leggless population at work is loving it. I can’t wait for Winter and this year I will have a ceiling and shouldn’t need the heaters.

So, I have found some wonderful gluten free pasta, San Remo, it actually tastes like normal pasta (but doesn’t give me nausea, diarrhea, cramps and a tongue three times its normal size) I have fresh FR chicken breast, asparagus, spring onions, mushrooms, bacon and cream.. Have checked online for recipes but I refuse to contaminate my fresh produce with canned cream of asparagus soup or some of the other revolting items in the recipes (sort of defeats the purpose of buying fresh, I could have bought the stuff in a jar if I wanted to go that way) I was goinng to slice the chicken and brown it in oil and garlic then add the sliced asparagus and bacon and lastly the mushrooms and add the cream just before I put it over the pasta. I have never tried this sort of dish before so I am wondering if I have the process right. Any corrections or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Also I just accidentally posted this on Pocketables thread regarding her bunny acting strangely, if one of the forum leader could delete it for me that would be great as I can’t find the delete option there.

Ahh, and here in western Finland we just got lots of snow… blaah, I would LOVE to see it melting instead of piling up! Oh well, at least the birds are singing like crazy, I can hear them even when I’m inside the house. Maybe there’s hope for spring?

Our bunnies have started shedding… it’s heavy but slow… we have to brush/comb them daily and it seems to do no good, even though the amount of fur can be measured in handfuls, haha.

Mmmmmm. Roberta that sounds so good! I would just make sure to add the cream on a low temperature if you want to make like a creamy sauce. My favorite thing is wrap bacon around asparagus and bake it. It’s so yummy.

Do they use litterboxes for the rabbits or just line the caging?

OMG, I have not been home all day! Agh!

So I have a problem. I was at my in-laws tonight and there is this stray cat they have been feeding. They on an acreage out in the country, so I assume the cat has taken shelter in one of their buildings. It comes to the back door for food. It meows and making a needing motion with its front paws, but if you come toward it it will run away. My in-laws said they thought it was a girl. I’m not so sure. I sat on the floor inside the door (it’s glass) and looked at the kitty. I couldn’t see any front claws, but they may have just been hiding in there. I could see the back claws clearly, so that is why I question it. The kitty turned around and I got a quick passing glance. I’m not positive, but it may be a boy that has been neutered.

Anyway, I fear for this cat. I’m afraid something will happen to it out there. My in-laws would never in a million years bring this cat into their house. Should I try to catch it? Or have my husband try to catch it? I wouldn’t know where to take it though. I hate taking animals to the humane society. =\

I suppose you could set up a cat trap so you can at least get a closer look.
If neutered, it’s possibly also microchipped.

How about ringing a cat rescue local to your in-laws? See what they advise? You’d also be able find out if they have room for it or who they recommend if they don’t.

Also might be worth looking over Lost notices for the area.

If he is neutered and declawed, then there is no doubt he belonged to someone. I don’t think he’s “lost” though. They did ask the neighbor and they said it didn’t belong to them. This area is pretty bad for people dumping unwanted animals.

Jerseygirl – they have both. Each bunny has a litter box in their area but they have wire cages for most of the bunnies as thats what has been donated to them in the past but they put down lots of newspaper and towels in the cages but they have the pans under the cages to catch most of it if it’s dropped – but a lot of the buns are really good about their litter shockingly.

Monkeybun – I have had to take animals to the humane society here before. It was a very unpleasant experience. There were some kittens roaming around out at my in-laws house. We thought we were doing the right thing by catching them and taking them to the humane society. When we took them there, they were so rude to us. They acted like we were these horrible people who unintentionally bred our cat and were now dumping the kittens there because we couldn’t get rid of them. We tried explaining to them that they were not our kittens, that they were running around out at my in-laws. They acted like we were making it up. They refused to tell us if they would be put up for adoption. We never saw them up for adoption, although it was a little while before we were able to go back. Anyway, there are several rescues around here that don’t like them because of their policies. I know of a cat rescue, so if we are able to catch this cat and it looks like he is in need of a home, then I might try them instead.

I feel like I’m making such great progress with my one-on-one bond with Ian and Hugo. =] Ian actually has cut back on his nipping and groomed my knee for the first time last night. I was so excited! And Hugo is still skittish but not nearly as much. He’s allowing me to have some cuddle/pet time with him. Which is really nice because he used to run away from me. I noticed when he’s happy and feeling comfortable he has this cute hop/skip that he does instead of his slow methodical/careful hop. It’s really nice to see the buns slowly open up.

I’ve been killing myself with trying to fill out job applications. I’m seriously SOL if I don’t get another job when I graduate. I would love to work at the local pet store but I feel like I would get fired for not selling rabbit cages to people and x-pens or dog crates instead. xD

Okay, I was roaming the Norwegian equivalent of Craigslist for neutered bunnies (4 hits, lol. Nobody neuteres their rabbits in Norway). I stumbeled across this bun, and HOW ALIKE isn’t he to Tanlover’s Simba!! They are twins!!

I’ve got a bit of a bunny dilemma – I had a friend who lives just south of me send me a message last night telling me that someone brought 5 naked little baby bunnies (probably a few days old) to the vet clinic she works at, she’s asked if I’d be interested in hand raising a couple. I was thinking it might be a good experience but then I thought “What if they have something that could be passed on to my three?”.

As you can see they’re not exactly small and pretty sure that wild rabbits around here don’t give birth to whites or what looks like tan marked kits.

Toady – We don’t have that problem here. I mean, there are things a bunny could give to your pet bunny but they aren’t as scary as some of the things you have over there. Gosh, that would be a tough decision. Have you ever hand raised a baby bun before?

Update on the cat – I am sure that it is declawed now. That means it is most likely fixed (one way or another). I’m still not positive because the kitty just won’t hold still long enough to get a good look but I’m still leaning toward neutered boy. So now I have to figure out how to convince my in-laws that this kitty needs to go somewhere where it will find a good home. It has obviously been dumped out there. Without its front claws, it is pretty defenseless. They live out in the country and there are lot’s of wild animals and mean feral kitties. They have had other stray cats out there before that they have fed, only to have them disappear one day. I really don’t want this kitty out there. I feel so bad for it. They agree it needs to be caught and so it can be taken to the vet. So maybe I can convince them to let me take it somewhere after taking it to the vet, rather than returning it out there. =\

Toady if I remember correctly wild rabbits are born with fur while domesticated buns are born furless. I can’t really help you with trying to decided as to what to do. I get really attached to animals especially if I have hand fed them. My cat had given birth prematurely to her litter and I had to bottle feed them. None of them made it and I was totally heartbroken. So, I honestly would stay away from the whole thing. It is up to you and if you can emotionally handle it if something did happen to a baby bun that you were daring for. On the other token I had bottle fed a kitten who had lived and I became super attached to her and refused to give her up. So if they do make it be prepared to maybe keep one of these little ones. ;P

SKipper’s Mama, our feral rabbits are the same species as pet rabbits, I’ve read that the jackrabbit is a different species and can’t interbreed, but it happens here so they’d be naked too. But they don’t look like feral bunnies, infact they’re quite big when you look at them compared to my friend’s hands.

LBJ – No I haven’t hand raised anything before which is why I’m so cautious, especially at the moment with calici and myxo out and about. If they were from a breeder who had lost a doe I might’ve said yes.

I’ve decided against taking any of them, I feel that with my depression if things went south (especially since they’re so young) that it’d do more bad than good… if they were a bit bigger (ie had fur and eyes open) it might be a different story.

The success rate of hand raising is not great Toady. And yes, it can be exhausting. Their best chance is if they could be put with a Doe that is already nursing. Nothing compares with actual rabbit milk.

Regarding things they could pass on, I suppose coccidiosis & pasteurella would be the main things but avoidable if you take care in handling between them and your own. EC is passed via contact with urine so I don’t see a big risk there. With myxi they actually have natural immunity against this while babies. I’m not sure about calici virus.

LBJ, good luck with that cat. It doesn’t make sense someone would go to trouble of having desexed and declawed only to dump it. I’d be more inclined to think its a lost pet.

Jerseygirl, I haven’t heard anything lately from my friend about if the babies have survived the last day and a bit or not. As I said with my mental health the way it is I’m going to have to pass on rearing them. No idea where they were found or where mother bunny is (or where the guy found them)

In other news I just got back from seeing a friend who got two young bunnies a month or so ago, she was told “two females”, as you can guess… nope one is definitely male, could easily see the sacks where the testes will move into. Gave her the name of the bunny vet I use and the fact they’re $100 cheaper than any local vet and told her where to get a better bunny mix for them. Cute black and brown brokens though!

Hello everyone!! I’m back finally Just began the school year again, and this year we have the stupid Naplan tests. It’s got me sorta worried about getting good grades and stuff. That’s why I haven’t been around much! Apollo is still a crazy little bubba, minus the bubba part now though!! He’s very good in that he noms up any new veggie I put infront of him! He’s still messing up his cage though, 2 1/2 months later. How do I go about cleaning up his habits and litter training him? I’m planning on building him a condo soon, using the cash I earn with my job (woohoo for having money ) but I can’t, coz he’s such a messy bugger!!

Toady, I remember some of you Aussies mentioning that your wild and domestic buns were the same. =p But I didn’t realize that they could crossbreed with your jackrabbits. That’s kind of interesting. Jersey – I don’t know how else the kitty could have gotten there though. Like I said, they live way out in the country. It doesn’t belong to the neighbor. I don’t think it is simply lost. The area is notorious for people dumping animals. I know it doesn’t make sense for someone to go through all that trouble and then dump the cat. Then again, my kitty was abandoned by the previous resident at our house. He was sitting in the driveway when we were moving in and the neighbor told us he lived in our house. My kitty was neutered and declawed. I guess his original owner just didn’t want him anymore. He was pretty “talky”. LOL So who knows.

I’ve discovered that the markets where I get my bunny greens from (and the freshest, not like the cr@p at the supermarkets) have cancelled and I’m unable to find out the people who I bought them from. And with the crazy wet weather my garden is refusing to grow. Has anyone ever grown microgreens? They’re bigger than sprouts with a week to 2 growth (depending on the plants) so I think that they’d be lower in alkaloids than sprouts.

Phew. So – new baby bunny added to the household. Rescued from a pet store and will be heading to the vets this week. No idea if it’s male or female and he about a pound and a half at the most. He’s adorable. A gray Lionhead. Exhausting to have a baby in the house again.

Okay, I am a little annoyed. Hopefully this doesn’t sound rude to anyone. My husband and I went out to eat tonight. It wasn’t anything really fancy (Applebee’s), but you would expect certain things to not occur. Well we were seated at this booth right behind this other group of people. I thought something smelled funny. Then I looked at their coats that said stuff about rodeos or something on them. Then it hit me, they smelled like cow. No, they literally smelled like cow. It’s been a while since I’ve been on here… so hello everyone! Hope your March is going splendid.

I’ve been really busy with school this semester and I’m hoping it pays off in A’s and B’s. I’ve also got my eye on a cool sea turtle internship for the summer and I am going on a netting trip this wednesday so the grad students can get to know me. Eek! wish me luck!

Finn has turned into a full fledged house rabbit. It was more due to lack of room than anything. I realized my zoo was taking over our apartment and I felt badly for my boyfriend so I took down Finn’s pen, moved the hedgehog into the laundry room (it’s warmer in there, so it’s ideal for the cold spell we’ve had lately) and set up his drum set.

Finn is doing wonderfully as a free range rabbit! I mean, other than the chewed carpet and the gaping hole in the couch but hey… it’s a learning experience. The perfume trick really works for deterring them from chewing.

Nikita – Oh wow, that sounds like it would be fun. Is this a specific school for vet techs or a program at a larger school? There are some schools out there that specialize in vet tech degrees.

Well I had an interesting day today. I took an owl to a senior center that specializes in dementia and Alzheimer’s. It was probably one of the easier presentations I have done. They would ask me a question, I would answer, and then 10 minutes later ask me the same question again.

Svandis – Totally happy about it! I hope that something happens here in the USA soon. I only use stuff not tested on animals, and slowly transitioning my household stuff over to cruelty free items. An animal shouldn’t have to suffer for the sake of our beauty needs -___- It is horrific.

I haven’t been on much, but I passed my Clinical Procedures Final. It was all of the things I learned this quarter: EKG, Phlebotomy, Capillary Puncture, Urinalysis, etc. It was not as bad as I thought. Now time to study for the final exam for that class.

LoveChaCha, I so agree! I doubt they would make a change like that for a really long time though. We were talking about animal rights in my anthropology class and we were discussing how the U.S. is the top breeding country of chimps that are used only for scientific/laboratory testing. It really sickened me because we were talking about how one the chimps were being done tested on they just put them in a small stacked cages. I really just wish animal testing in general would stop it totally kills.

I’m going stir crazy right now. It’s Spring Break and I have nothing to do. All my plans are for this weekend and I’m stuck bored in the mean time. xD The bf and I have been impatiently waiting for the new episode of Vikings. The first episode was amazing. I totally love the History channel. We started to watch the Walking Dead (at like 1:30 in the morning) and I was totally freaked. I have this MASSIVE phobia of zombies. And watching it so late at night just messed with my head. I had to sleep with the light on. >.<

OK so I’m totally loving this vet tech degree. I’m doing it online. I’d rather do it in a real school but there is nothing that isn’t two hours away so online was the only option. And the shelter is so awesome. I’m having so much fun going there everyday and giving them veggies and starting to socialize them. They are so sweet and have already made so much improvement in just a couple days. And they are crazy over there veggies. I’m slowly weaning them on but they get so excited when they see me now. And I get all eight babies out right after I get there so they can exercise and explore. They only trouble I’m having now is people just not understanding. Like one lady yelled at me cause she said I was gonna give them diarrhea. I just smiled and nodded and kept doing what I was doing. I’m definitely falling in love with the big papa bun. He is such a sweetheart. Sometimes he wants to snuggle but then it’s like he remembers he is still scared of me. 🙂

Nikita – Oh this is an online thing? I didn’t know you could do a vet tech degree online. How do you get your license then? Do you have to do an internship at a vet or something first?

Spring break isn’t until next week for me. Not that it really matters though. I don’t have any classes. I’m still not making any progress. *sigh* It seems like there is nothing I can do to make things move forward. Oh well, I guess I can at least pretend I’m on spring break. I have to work several days next week though. I hope it will be nice since I’ll probably be outside.

I’m having a go at growing oat/wheat ‘fodder’ for the bunnies due to lack of suitable greens around here. Also let the girls out in a selected area while I sat and watched a DVD in there with them, they had a great time hopping around, binkying, harassing Loki and Thee got her head through the wire barrier enough to put a bite into the phone line leading to my modem, thankfully it wasn’t deep enough to hit the wires.

I’ve started to take Bosse outside in his pen now for playtime on sunny days, a little longer each time so he gets used to it, always supervised. I just hang out with him in the pen or just outside of it. Its so nice to have breakfast outdoors when the sun is shining and bosse is zooming. This is from a few days ago, I think he loves it.

I was in the bathroom this morning and when I got out, Chacha was on my pillow and trying to get the cookie container open! When she saw me, she gave me the “WHAT, I’M INNOCENT!” look.

The bf and I ran out to a feed store that was a little bit north of us in Citrus to get some Equine Pine. A little bummed because they didn’t sell the brand but something like it called Stable Master. Or something like it. =p It seems pretty good. I do worry though because I saw a few pine shaving mixed in. So I’m wondering if I should try to find another feed store that carries Equine Pine. Anyway, while we were there the woman that runs the shop was listing off what it can be used litter wise. And we told her that we were using it for our house rabbits. She looked surprised and told us that she had some flemmies out back. The poor babies were so skittish and kept in tiny little wire cages. Thankfully there was a layer of hay down on the cage’s bottoms. The bf and I sooooo wanted to save one of the little babies. But we just don’t have the time to take care of a fourth.

Today we didn’t plan on doing much — as some of you might remember the bunny condo we made when we bonded our trio — since we bonded our quartet the bunny condo was okay but not really sufficient.  They had a lot of run time during the day… and then with our newest addition in the house, we decided to construct something much easier with lots more space.  So we have gone from bunny condo to bunny x-pen situation that takes up half our dining room!  haha!  But the little bratscals are worth it.  Here’s a picture:

 

 

 

Simba initially got a little humpy with everyone when we gave them dinner (a few hours after they had all been hanging out in their new area) and was agitating Tanger and Sidney so I’m sleeping out here with them just to be sure but he’s been fine since… so I think we are A-Okay!    I love that the buns finally have a space they can run around in and not be confined to their condo all day.   We had thought about this set-up with the condo back in the far corner where it has been for quite some time now but then figured this would just make cleaning SOOO much easier.   Also, it’s hysterical — Sidney and Tanger have taken to jumping in and out of the cage via their little cat scratcher that you can see right next to the side of the cage!  Also, it’s nice to know that $100 cage is finally coming in handy since we can’t use it for bunnies anyways!!!

I feel like crap right now. I got a very unexpected rejection letter (was told they would not be interviewing until April) today and I literally feel sick to my stomach. It was an internship with that same place I applied at way back in May. It was exactly what I was looking for and I thought perhaps I could do my thesis there as well. You know, since my thesis is going no where fast. I had thought I could do something where I am now, but I feel like they stole my thesis idea. I feel so hopeless right now and I have no one to talk to. My husband isn’t home, but I doubt he’ll want to hear about it when he does come home. *sigh* I guess I could attempt to squeeze one of the rabbits. They don’t want much to do with me either.

UGH. So stressed out AGAIN. I’m so sick of the maintenance people coming. Apparently someone in our condo complex has been complaining about pests (most likely it is one of the senile old people who can’t tell their butt from their toes again). So they are sending in a pest team to thoroughly check each condo on Wednesday. So now I have FIVE bunnies to hide (one of which can’t be with the others). One of my friends is going to come over and hide with them in the bathroom, pretending to take a shower. If they need to check in there, I will tell them they have to come back in 10-15 minutes when she’s out of the shower and then we will move them into the bedroom. It’s SOOOOOO dumb that we OWN the freaking place but can’t even have pocket pets! Nothing! Not even a hamster or guinea pig without being fined if they see the animal. The boyfriend and I have discussed getting a bigger place in a few years and he has thought about this place but I can’t keep having to hide the bunnies forever. Especially when we want a bigger place so we can give them a bunny room! LOL. No point in having to hide bunnies when you have a BUNNY ROOM. At least their new housing set-up will make tearing down and setting it back up WAY easier.

I think Nora’s sneezing has been getting better, thank God! She has been sneezing way less and is getting way more curious about me when I chill in her area while she plays. I love watching her. Although, she is a feisty little thing. Always keeping her feet everywhere and thumping at any disturbance to her play time.

I’m super glad that school is back from break. I have something to do for now. I don’t deal well with change. And transferring to another college for my B.A. has me freaking out. And having to commit to teaching one grade is really stressing me out. So I’m thinking of taking off a semester to do some subbing to make sure that I’m going into teaching the grade that I really want to. I don’t want to make anymore mistakes that I’m going to have pay for for a long time. >.<

I have been really busy lately with school and projects going on, so I’ve barely been on here, I miss all the adorable bunny pics!

I had to leave Alvin and Tasha(my dog) at home when I left for college, so I’ve been deprived of my buddies adorable antics and faces for a few months now.  We’re looking at a place on Saturday, hopefully it has the space and everything we need and I’ll be able to have my buddies with me again! I’ve seen the outside, it appears smaller than my current home, but is on a quieter street and the area looks cleaner, so I’m hopeful that the inside is as well maintained as the outside. *crosses fingers*

About a week ago there was a lizard that had made its way onto the second floor hallway of the college and so I “chased” it down the hallway and stairs until it finally made its way outside and into a tree. It took me almost 20 minutes or so because the crazy critter kept stopping to look at me to see if I was going to keep following it! These lizards just aren’t afraid of much, they’re more curious than anything, so I was able to take several photos of it. I name all of these types of lizards “Bobby” because they’re always bobbing their heads up and down and look so comical.

Phew – the bunnies were well-hidden when the maintenance people came. Luckily everything worked out.

But of course, the buns have been bickering a bit. I think it’s the new territory. So we switched it around a bit and moved things around and they’re back to being good buns with no fighting or chasing. Thank Goodness, I had to sleep with them again last night to watch them since they were fighting when we went to bed and I heard them going at it – so we came out and moved everything around. And they’ve been fine since. Oy VEY.

The boyfriend is gone to Philly until Friday or Saturday so I’m home alone with the bunnies! Whoo -hoo but boy is it boring!!

Tanlover I hear you! The bf always seems to work when I have time off. And I’m always bored at of my mind.

So my little rascals have decided to plow their way through the huge bundle of willow sticks we bought them. I ended up taking a drive over to the pet store to go pick up some sticks and pine cones for them to chew on until their new bundle of willow sticks comes in the mail. Every time I go to the pet store I check on the baby buns that they sell. I’m not a fan of them selling the buns but I keep an eye on them and make sure that they’re in good health. It’s just become a habit since the time that I saw one of their buns had a case of mites. Any way, today I went to go check on them and I noticed that one of the buns was a little lethargic. He would let the others climb all over him without trying to get them off. So I hung around the enclosure just to make sure the bad feeling I was getting about his health just wasn’t a hunch. He did a few sneezes within about a five minute time span. I couldn’t really see the bun’s nose so I asked one of the worker’s to see him. The poor baby had a wet nose with a few clumps of white looking mucus. I felt like a jerk but I had to say something. I was like, “I think this little guy has an upper respiratory infection or at least something is up with him”. The guy that was ‘helping’ me called over another worker to come look at him. The way she picked up the little guy just made me cringe! She picked him up one handed by his back and held him tilted onto his back that way without supporting his feet. And he tried kicking while he was like that and I just about freaked out because I was worried that he was going to kick out his back. They took the little guy into the back room to give him medicine. Or at least that is what they said. I’m really worried about him. I’m going to send the bf tomorrow to go check on him since I have work/class all day tomorrow. Or I might just skip my night class and go see him… I’m just concerned because they weren’t going to take him to the vet and they were just going to treat him…..

Whew! So I’m in the process of maybe getting a new job/on the hunt for a new job. But sometime soon I really want to volunteer at an animal shelter. We have about three or four main ones in our city. The one I adopted Lucy from has a program that’s six months and the SPCA has a three month program. But I’m possibly moving over the summer, so I don’t know if I’d be able to commit for six months, even though I like that shelter more. I’ll probably apply to the one for the SPCA over the next few weeks. Oh and Lu turns 5 months in four days!

Caroline — I would talk to them about your specific plans and how you aren’t sure you can commit to six months because you might be moving, I’m sure they will work with you. Both of the shelters I volunteer for told me during introduction that they put a min. time limit for volunteering to scare away potential people who aren’t serious about coming in and actually helping (wasting the shelters time). So I’m sure they would still accept you as you can help. Are you thinking about volunteering with the dogs, cats, buns, or all three?? I know all of our shelters are SOOOO low all the time on volunteers for the buns! It’s so great that you want to do something like this!

I’m happy as long as I just get a passing grade.. I’m struggling a bit. I’m not sure if I’m going to continue studying psychology or if I’m gonna try something entirely different. Been thinking of studying to become an “animal nurse” or a vets technician or something. I have like 100 tabs open in my browser with different occupations I need to look into.
My depression is also really bad nowadays. What do you guys do when you feel down or have trouble sleeping?

When I’m down, I focus all my energy on a project. Getting something done lifts my spirits, and helps me to get other things going. Like making a new pair of earrings, or even just something as simple as cleaning a room up. Once its done I feel better about it, and myself for doing something worthwhile

Svandis, I know how you feel, I’m in the middle of a depressive rut myself and I don’t know if things are improving or not. I would say to shout yourself something nice or spend some time doing something you like but I know how hard that can be, I love spinning wool into yarn but haven’t had the motivation to do that for months now. I find just lying on the floor with my pets can help me something (especially since my boy Loki loves giving me bunny licks)

Yep. I’m sitting here ringht now, on binkybunny whilst watching HIMYM at 07:53, still haven’t gone to bed. It’s embarassing really, I feel as a 19 yo. I sound at least manage to sleep at proper hours. I am doing an overnighter to try and straighten up my routine..

@Svandis and Toady, I’m well familiar with overnighters! Feels like the past 2 months I haven’t slept at night at all. I work in evenings so it doesn’t effect my work but it does limit what gets done at home and who I see during the day.
One thing I have heard is really beneficial is getting out during morning light. I think from dawn to 11am the quality of light can have a positive effect.
Svandis, what are the daylight hours like in Norway? You’re coming out of winter now right?

So I was surrounded by nothing but firemen and they had evacuated everyone into another building so no one saw me come out with them either. Although, some reporter took a picture of the firefighter holding them as we walked out and I quickly turned so he couldn’t get my face. But I think we are all good!

Jerseygirl – Yeah, I think getting morning light helps a lot! We had some nice weather not long ago and almost all of the snow had melted. It was a lot easier to just get up in the morning and go outside with Bosse and get a good start to the day, and that helped a lot with my insomnia. But now it’s back to snowblizzards and darkness, lol. We have daylight from about 9 am till 7 pm, but it’s mostly overcast. I really hope the weather clears up soon

Seriously though, I understand how it is to be depressed and have absolutely no motivation whatsoever. I have been struggling for quite some time now. It all began when I was dropped from my grad school funding and I have been depressed ever since. I can’t find a job and I can’t even begin to work on my thesis. Words cannot describe my frustrations, yet I feel powerless to do anything.
Does your school have a career center? Perhaps they can help you find an area that you would be more interested in.

Oh God, what a horrible day….. Another Facebook friend Janet had her house burn down today. Janet is a BB Member but I don’t know her BB name as I knew her through FB friends and Bunspace. The ceiling collapsed and they were unable to get the buns out. Janet lost all 8 of her babies. My heart is so broken for her right now I feel ill. Little Star, Rosie, Opus and Bernie and Zach were found and they are burying them…. They have nothing left but the clothes on their back… If anyone knows Janets BB name could they let me know.. Janet was preparing to adopt a dog as well.

Crap… I meant to put this in March Chat… Although that seems to me the wrong place because of the name… I don’t know…. Just feeling sick and sad for Janet.. If a forum leader can relocate my post or something…..

They are having to use a neighbours computer too so I don’t know if its possible to reach them other than by FB.

We have a great rabbit community here – and the rescue where I got Simba and the rescue Nora is in right now boards bunnies at their foster homes. So I would probably board them with a trusted bunny family until we were out of the clear and could get them back in. We own the place so they can only do so much as far as fining us and whatnot – I’m not sure if they would fine us and then come back to check a few times or what, but since we own they can’t come unannounced. I went to VegFest this past weekend It was terrific. I got lots of coupons and free samples. I even met a book author that I have read about as I researched recipes online! She signed my book and was very happy to take a picture with me!

You guys I feel so terrible! Abbie was greeting my hubs and he had a drill between his feet (he’s doing some building) anyways, it got knocked over and the sharp point punctured her tiny little foot. She screamed and came running to me. I was inspecting her foot but couldn’t find anything. S I just assumed she got startled. I put her back down and she started whimpering even more so I got a light and looked and the drill bit did a pretty good mark on her foot. It’s like a pin hole but it was deep enough to draw blood for a few minutes. I dabbed the wound with hydrogen peroxide and then applied neosporin to avoid infection.

Abbie is like my baby and its been a few hours and she still won’t apply pressure to her foot it’s so sore for her she limps so bad. It takes her like 5 minutes to get to the door. I feel so guilty having to watch her be in pain and not want to play. Poor baby hopefully by tomorrow she’ll feel better.

Yeah if she doesn’t quit limping in a day or two she will be going to the vet. The hole doesn’t look TOO deep but her foot is so small it can easily make its way down to the bones and tendons. I mean, her foot is maybe an inch thick. There isn’t any swelling which is great and it doesn’t feel hot. I just feel terrible for her! Especially with the fact that she isn’t even willing to play she ALWAYS brings me a toy when I ask where her toy is at. I just asked her “where’s your toy, Abbie? Go get it ” and she got excited but as soon as she got up she laid back down because she was too sore. Broke my heart. So I went and got her fox so she can chew on it while laying down… She’d much rather play fetch or tug of war though.

I would also advise taking her to the vet ASAP and not holding off for a day or two. Sometimes if injuries are left for any period of time they can get worse. Especially if she’s walking on it and shouldn’t be.

it doesn’t take much to injure their poor feet. Chipmunk was trying to climb his cage and jumped down. he screamed which is what got my attention and I ran to him and he hopped up in my arms. I didnt see any damage, so I waited two days and on the second day I noticed that after limping on it his toe was at a funny angle and I brought him in to the vet. because he walked on it he damaged the already torn ligaments and had to have his toe amputated. he is perfectly fine now, just minus one toe. plus the thought of them in pain is just horrifying too. you never know how bad just from an initial look!! I hope she feels better soon and it is nothing!!

Woke up this morning and Abbie was back to playing and running around like a normal dog! Safe to say a vet isn’t necessary. This was her first ever injury in her 4 yrs of life so she was probably just in shock at what she was feeling lol. Or she could have been milking it because she was enjoying the extra attention :p

Also, just received a new phone book this morning and its going straight to Sally’s cage! She loves destroying things

My buns sure are lucky, especially little Nora – she’s the talk of the rabbit community with her awkward head swaying and her resp. infection and before her, Simba had the hearts of everyone a the rescue we got him from!  Haha!  People were like “YOU HAVE SIMBA?!?” whenever I met them.  My little boy was a star!  My little lion boy… Haha.  

Ugh, life seems so stressful right now.  Still haven’t been able to move back home and we had to move the buns to the basement because my boyfriends dad came home from vacation with his dog.  Although the buns seem to be loving it more than they did upstairs – besides the less attention.  We would always say hi and pet them as we went from room-to-room but we’ve been making lots of time to go down there and spend with them in between trying to get the condo back together.  

Nora also had her first veggie last night!  Red romaine.  She loved it.  This morning her poos looked fine so I gave her a small leaf out of the buns salad and she went nuts doing the “love dance” around me.  Haha!  She was all over me after she got a taste of that.  Goodness she’s frreaking adorable!!!

I’m having some personal issues with friends. Which has me wanting to strangle a few people while shaking a good number of others. The bf and I are so opposite when dealing with these issues. He’s trying to be real kind about the situation and saying sort of neutral things that make the person happy but it is not causing them to remedy the situation. Which in turn causes me to just sit there and give him the drollest of stares. If anything is going to be solved you’re going to have to be very honest, open, and direct about the situation. Of course, it’s going to hurt more. Letting a wound air out always does. But it’s better than letting the wound fester with a bandaid over it. Oivey. I wonder sometimes at how different the two of us can be and yet get on as well as we do.

It has been proven that they can’t be “rehabilitated” which is why they go on the website for life that way people will know.
Yeah, he is watched more closely. Someone comes by apparently 4 times a year to update his picture and make note of any changes like his job and such.
He is tier 3 and is a high risk and has raped a little girl and had sexual contact with another little girl. I’m deeply concerned has to why he isn’t locked up again since he is a repeat offender.

It really surprised me because when we first moved in he came to our house to welcome us to the neighborhood and tell us that there is a few houses at the entrance that are high crime areas and that the area we were at was quiet and the most low key. so it REALLY surprised me that he was a high risk sex offender…

Jersey yes sex offenders are closely regulated. Depending on their crime and the severity of it they will get frequent check ups from their parol officers. The checkups will be both at home and at work.

Jersey yeah, we’re bystanders in a sense. It’s a conflict that is going on between friends that we’ve had since high school. And we love them to death. (One not so much since he’s very not nice words and is the central issue of the conflict. But we respect the other friend’s feelings so we don’t totally bash the dude.)

BullRider, I know what you mean. This month has been terrible for so many. I almost cried when I saw Piglet had passed. I haven’t been on his page very long but his story and how his family cared for him was just so incredibly touching. I really began looking forward to his updated videos. And then when I saw that picture with him not in it… I just knew. My heart goes out for them and Piglet. He lived a long life with a great family though. That’s what matters most. Do you know how Janet is doing or holding up? I’ve been thinking about her a lot. After reading her story, it made me realize how lucky my family, my buns, and I are. I’m a strong believer that everything happens for a reason so I will keep her in my prayers and my heart until we can all figure out what that reason was. What a wonderful and strong woman she is.

NewBunnyOwner, Good Lord! That is horrifying. I have this app on my phone that I downloaded so I know where to avoid whenever I’m walking down the street! Hahaha. Somehow we got lucky in our building – no one listed there! Just a crazy who blew up his condo… but no child sex offenders here! People are just so…. wrong. I know plenty of people who grow up with hard lives but don’t do this kind of stuff – I wonder at what point… they just begin thinking this is all okay? Do they know what they are doing is wrong? I just don’t understand.

SkippersMama – I know the feeling! I’ve been having a small conflict with my best (and only) friend out here. She’s the only REAL friend I’ve made since I’ve moved to Pittsburgh. The BF and I also have such different ways of dealing with situations. Maybe that’s why we are all attracted to each other? I agree though, just PULL the bandaid off and address the problem! It’s the hardest way but it’s what needs to be done to fix a problem. Giving someone else a false sense of security in a relationship (whether friendship or boyfriend) is always a bad decision to make. And can be just as hurtful as just telling them straight out!

At least where I live, they are not allowed to take up residence within a certain distance of any school, daycare, or other place where children congregate. But yes, definitely look up an area you are interested in moving to so you can see who is there.

Well I heard that they need to tell any new neighbors they are a sex offender. I’ve always thought that was a rule. I know I wouldn’t have purchased this place knowing there was a offender 20 feet from me.

They only have to warn people if an offender is moving into the area, they don’t have to make the person let all his new neighbors know when they move in near him.

If he’s high risk, though, I am sure the police are keeping an eye on him, they wouldn’t just let him go and forget him.

There are a couple sex offenders not too far from where I live. I drive by the house of one of them practically every day when I enter the neighborhood on my way home. The other one lives on the other side of the park and we have walked through the park and walked past their house many times. I never knew until I was curious and looked at the local sex offender registry on day. I’m pretty sure people were only notified when they moved in. I suppose it is considered the responsibility of anyone else seeking to move into the neighborhood to do their own investigating, since the registry is public information.

I also wanted to add that the registry should say what the crime was that they were convicted of. How long they must stay on the registry will depend on the severity of the crime. Lifetime usually means they did something really bad or they were repeat offenders. You could always talk to this person too and find out the circumstances surrounding their crime.

I hate to even get into this discussion but, and I’m not making light of your concerns NewBunnyOwner, but if you look at how high the stats are for child sexual abuse (and those are just the documented cases) I doubt there is anyone on this forum that isn’t living with a stone’s throw of someone who has abused a child. You just have the advantage of knowing. Don’t let that be the reason you decide not to have a child. Besides you can still have a child now continue your plans to move in five years, no child under 5 is going to out playing unsupervised in the neighbourhood so nothing will happen between now and then.
I would make a point of letting the neighbour know you are aware of his past telling him you would appreciate him keeping his distance in the future and leave it at that.

As a survivor of child sexual abuse I tell everyone the same thing. Don’t ever think you can keep the predictors away from your children. They will wear whatever mask they need to get access to them and every day all over the world perfectly nice, respectable men (in the public’s view) are committing horrible crimes in private. The best any of can do is prepare out children to protect themselves if they are fund themselves in a bad situation. Let them know they can tell an adult no, and that you will believe anything you tell them.

Anyway there is lots of good info online but don’t hit the panic button on this just because you are aware of the name and face next door, your new neighbour make be as bad or worse and you could never know.

Well I was going to go have a bar b que with a few friends on base but I now get to work 10am-7pm. On my way home from work tonight my car’s check engine light came on and not 5 minutes later quits working! It’s a 2012 chevy equinox! it only has 15k miles on it so i was pretty stressed out.
I don’t know what can be wrong but I had to walk home (an hour). Like I can turn my car on but as soon as you hit the gas it dies! Grr. So Monday we will be calling the dealership and they better fix my car! No car should be breaking down this soon

Hi NBO… That depends.. It sounds like a fuel blockage. That can be caused by dirty fuel or letting your tank run low so the sediment at the bottom of the tank gets into the fuel lines. In most cases it is an easy fix, they just need to blow out the fuel lines.

Oh thank goodness! That’s what my neighbor was thinking was that there was a fuel blockage. I was freaking out. I’m going to do some research and hopefully it’s an easy enough fix that my husband can fix it tomorrow.

Because they were closed. And today is Easter sunday. We called our insurance last night but they had us holding FOREVER so gave up and called this morning. They provided a free towing. Luckily, my husband seems to be savvy at everything he does and was able to fix the truck! So now I don’t have to reschedule Sally’s spay and I can go tomorrow morning! phew!
