I’m just very curios…….. has anyone made any observations on males or females being more liberal in regards to bunnies giving their human caretakers kisses (grooming us back). I was missing Radar and how she would always lick my cheek after I rubbed her head for awhile and I was thinking that many of my female rabbits were very loving and very generous with bunny kisses…while I just can’t remember any of my males doing so. Fred is an incredibly loving bunny, though I’ve yet to get full idea of his personality as his brain is still hijacked by bunny testosterone….. so I wait until that is past to find the true Fred. Was wondering if it’s just the males I happened to have who were on the bunny one-way street of love (coming in..not goin’ out) or if it is a general norm that males are less loving back than females. Don’t want to set myself up for disappointment thinking I might get bunny kisses from Fred later on if it isn’t likely. Thanks in advance!
Boston (female) would lick and lick and lick all day if we’d let her! Pumpkin (female) absolutely no kisses! Shamrock (male) saves all his kisses for Pumpkin!
We got Boston as a baby and we were all she knew. I’ve kind of always chalked it up to that. She thought we were one of her kind from the get-go? It was easy to build up that trust as a baby. We got Pumpkin when she was 2 (after being re-homed many times) and Shamrock was 3 and we don’t know how many homes he had!
Kieko is our only people kisser. She tries to lick is every time we pet her ad if she’s returning the favor. The lops groom each other constantly but never a single people kiss. I’ve tried sticking my hand under their heads, and they hop away. Tried putting banana on my hand and they try to bite it off instead of lick. We got all three as babies, but I think the lops weren’t treated properly before we got them — I know they were carried by the scruff and it took forever for them to not run away if we touched them there.
Our female rabbits have always been the ones that kissed us. Our male rabbits rarely or never gave us any licks.
My girl Marilyn Bunroe is a non stop kisser. My boy Casper has never kissed me before. He sometimes kisses Marilyn when she demands it. I rank lowest on his hierarchy. Sometimes when Marilyn is kissing Casper, I will put my hand in front of her mouth and steal the kisses, just to make him jealous!
Chester is a male and he started off refusing to give me kisses. I used to put my hand under his chin for them and he would just look at me like “What? You’re supposed to be the one grooming ME, silly human” and flip my hand so it was over his head… But for the last year he’s slowly started giving me kisses after I pet him and now he’ll just come up to me and groom my pants! He doesn’t like grooming skin, though, only fabric. But I can love with that ![]()
Bun Bun has never given me a kiss. Sometimes he’ll scent mark me if that counts? aha
Oh My Gosh Thump! I LOVE your rabbit’s name, Marilyn Bunroe…that it awesome! Fred’s full name is “Fred EstHare”
Ahhhh, I see. Thanks for your input……..So, it looks like my generalizations about most boys are correct. I always had a female-male bonded pair whenever I did have a male, so I figured maybe they simply preferred to love their rabbit friend than to groom me. Fred will be the first “single” male we’ve had – I won’t keep my hopes up, but Chester has given me a little hope that it is possible. ![]()
I’ve had 5 bunnies and the only one who ever gave kisses was my little Mini-Rex Stormy. He used to give us so many kisses!!!! I really, really miss his bunny kisses.
Fuji (female) doesn’t really give kisses. She much rather do her own thing. Although, on rare occasions when I pet her she will lick my pants or my arm sleeve. Does this count as kissing? I just shrugged it off as she just likes the texture of the fabric.
I have a male, Simba, who gives kisses. Zoe will when she feels like it but not very often.
My boy bun Augie kisses clothes but doesn’t kiss skin, if you demand kisses he will turn his back to you
my girl bun Aurie is a mad kisser, she doesn’t want to receive pets, only wants to give! I hope she’s still this affectionate once her puppy phase ends!
My baby boy kisses me all over everytime I come to play with him. Especially when I bring an alfalfa snack ring, he gets crazy and grooms me everywhere he can
I guess it depends on their personality, Harvey seems to be an exceptionally cuddly bunny.
My guy Gus kisses and kisses. And he has a BIG tongue!
Ive had 4 buns. My first, was a boy, he only gave me kisses, no one else. My second was a boy also. He would curl up on my head at night and lick my hold face and head. My third doesnt give me kisses, my 4th bun love giving me kisses. So only one female that gave me lovings and 2 males that did…. so not sure if that means anything.
Both my boys give kisses. Lots of them. But I only have them so I can’t compare. I remember that my female bunny that I had as a child used to lick my hands and arms and my mother said she wanted the salt from my skin. I never had that really close relationship with her and I still feel so sorry for her for that,
OK Bam. I’ve heard that theory about salt on the skin and I admit Gus seems extra interested in kisses if I’ve been working up a sweat at work, but I prefer not to chalk it up to anything less than he loves me ha ha!!
Megabunny, I don’t believe in the salt-on-the-skin theory! It was just how my mother explained it back in the Dark Ages, when i was little and house-bunnies sat in cages all day long and were slowly bored to death. I’m convinced bunny kisses are a form of grooming and perhaps that they also can be an appeasing behavior. My boys licks my hands in reciprocity when I pet their heads.
So, love it is =)
Well, I like your explanation better, Bam! Thank you!
I think there might be something to the salt theory!! Boston used to lick the crap out of hubby after a long sweaty day at work!!!! BUT I don’t think there is anyway Boston would have kissed to begin with if it wasn’t for her love for us…so I think the theory is true and false!!!
