        Hello,

My 4 month old male Giant Chinchilla rabbit sometimes has the typical male musky smell. While I’m waiting to get him neutered, I’m wondering if people think I should worry about the carpeting. If there’s no obvious urine (he saves that for the dog bed!) or poops around, sometimes I have detected a very faint musk on the rug, but it’s barely noticable, and I wipe down the area. I am going to shampoo the carpet, but, of course, I’ll have him out and about again. I’m a bit phobic (OK, a lot) and I wondered if anyone else worried about this.

        Thanks,

        J.M.

Well if he has pissed on an area on the carpet you want to clean it sooner then later. I have used a little vinegar/water mix and let it sit a while before then scrubbing to get out. If not he will probably go back to that spot on occasion to potty. It will definitely start to stink.

I would think that is what you are actually smelling and not because your bun sat on a spot a while an his body odor was absorbed by carpet.

Buns can release scent from their scent glands and while not neutered it does stink. My boyfriend not so politely said Powder could chin rub something and make it smell like jock sweat (well, he put it in different wording). So, they don’t have to actually go potty to make it stink. The worst comes from their anal glands though, when they get excited and put their tail up and run around … the room used to smell a bit skunky when mine did that. If they spray, you would notice a wet spot, so dab it with a paper towel and if it is dry it is just scenting. You could check and see if his anal glands need cleaning out as well.

Thanks so much. I did clean out his glands, although they weren’t particularly full. But they were still stinky (of course!). Looking forward to getting him neutered, I think.
