› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Luna has a fever
I am really worried about my bunny Luna. She wasn’t acting normal and wasn’t eating very much so we took her to the Vet on Tuesday afternoon. She had a temperature and was given fluids. The vet checked her over and her chest sounded completely clear, no discharge anywhere, her ears looked good on the outside and her teeth looked good. My vet suspected that it might be an inner ear infection that was just caught too early to appear on x rays. She is being treated for an infection. She was given fluids at the vet and was put on Cyproheptadine HCI, Marbofloxacin, Cisapride, Meloxicam, and Simethicone. I’m also giving her critical care 3 times a day until she starts eating like normal again.
It is now Friday and she doesn’t seem to want to eat anything at all on her own today and she isn’t pooping either. Her gut was making a ton of noises when I gave her the critical care this afternoon. I am just super worried.
I’m very sorry Luna is ill. Sometimes fever shows before other symptoms, so I’m glad your vet started treatment.
The meds you have got are an appetite-stimulant (cyproheptadine), marbofloxacine is an antibiotic that’s used against pasteurella in rabbits (pasteurella is the most common causative bacteria in bunny sinus- and ear infections), a gut motility drug (cisapride), Meloxicam which is an anti-inflammatory & painkiller and anti-pyretic (mesning it lowers fever) and simethicone against gas.
You have to feed her if she wont eat. You can divide the CC up into 5 separate feedings per day, so she doesnt have to eat so much at any one time. You can give 0,5-1 ml simethicone once per hour for three hours if there’s lots of gas, gas often causes a rumbling noise in the tummy and makes the bun lose its appetite.
Keep us posted.
Get well soon ((((Luna))))
If she hasn’t pooped all day, take her back to the vet ASAP. Whatever else is wrong with her could also be throwing her into full blown stasis. The vet will probably give her motility drugs through an IV along with all the other drugs she’s on. Give her tummy rubs too because that along with the Simethicone should help relieve any gas.
I gave her 1ml this morning with her other meds so does that mean I can no longer give it to her once per hour for three hours now?
I would at least give 1 ml now. How long ago was it when you fed the critical care, and when she last pooped? ((((Luna))))
I just gave her another 1ml at 5:30 and now another at 9:00. I fed her critical care today at 1:30 and now again at 9 and will give her more again at 2am when I give her her second round of medicine. Am I perhaps not feeding her often enough? Her tummy makes a lot of noise after the critical care and I am messaging her tummy. She hasn’t pooped since last night, if things don’t improve then back to the vet we will be going.
(((Luna))) Please get better. xx
Do you have any Meloxicam on hand? I use this for my bun when he gets a fever related to his teeth. .5ml for him. He gets a bad tummy when on antibiotics.
Is there a possibility of tooth abscess?
I hope your bunny gets well soon! I didnt know it was common to massage their bellies – I do this too
Just seemed like the thing to do when they are feeling poorly. Does she show any interest in hay? When my boy bun is unwell I will put a long strand in front of his face to nibble on, something is better than nothing.
Simethicone can be given frequently because it’s not a drug that’s taken up in the bloodstream, it stays in the GI canal and comes out with the poop.
This Howcast vide about how to help a bun with gas pain is good: https://www.howcast.com/videos/514701-how-to-help-a-rabbit-with-gas-pain-pet-rabbits/
So Luna went back to her exotic vet because I was just too worried. Her temperature was normal, she was active and alert and the vet said her lower intestines have a little gas but she’s not bloated or having extreme gas. He gave her more fluids, upped her dose of cisapride to 3/4 of a pill every 12 hours and I am now supposed to give her critical care every 2 to 3 hours.
I have never prayed so hard for poop in all my life!
Sending poop vibes!! C’mon Luna, poooooop!!!!
Poop vibes for (((((Luna)))))
Just wanted to update.
We upped her dose of the cisapride yesterday to 3/4 of a tab of the 2.5 tiny tabs and the vet gave her fluids and was kind enough to get 4 syringes of critical care in her for me. She started to poop very tiny little poops last night. Today her poops have been much bigger but still not nearly as much as usual and she is still not eating on her own. She will nibble like 4 stands of hay every few hours and that’s it so we are continuing with the critical care every 3 hours. I just don’t understand why she isn’t eating on her own.
Incoming poop picture….

I remember when my rabbit Arwen had a fever she wouldn’t eat for 4 days I had to feed her baby food and give her water with syringe about 3-4 times a day. Then she began eating hay little by little until she got better. You just have to be patient eventually Luna will be back to her happy little self ![]()
Keep going! She’ll get around eating again when she’s more ok with her GI. More poop vibes~~~~
Sometimes it’s very gradual, returning to pooping and eating normally. (((((Eating and Poop Vibes)))))
Her poops look much better! Agree with LPT. Any forward progress is good no matter how small
. ((((Luna))))
Quite nice poops ?
Her poops continue to be getting better but still not as much as before. She is gradually starting to eat on her own again though. She ate the entire 1/4 cup of pellets I left out last night and shes also eating a little more hay. She seems to be favoring the pellets though, should I limit those?
Picture of my Luna bean
She’s gorgeous! It’s a catch 22 situation: too many pellets can be bad for the gut flora, but not enough eating will also cause issues. She is eating some hay, so that’s good. If she is eating pellets, then I would be inclined to continue to give her pellets (but not above her normal daily pellet ration if she is eating). To help entice her to eat even more hay, try mixing in some fresh hay with the hay currently in her hay feeder, and do that multiple times throughout the day.
What a beautiful bunny!!
