I posted last week about some symptoms Lullabelle was having that I thought was a tooth abscess. I took her into the vet’s on Friday where they confirmed my fears. I took her in for surgery yetesterday.
Yesterday they called me and said that they put her under anesthesia and took a look at her and determined that the procedure would take more time than they had. The doctor said that he did think it was an abscess but that it was affecting more than he thought and would like to keep her overnight to monitor her and go back in the next day when he had more time.
Today they went in again to do it and I get a phone call around noon with suprising news – i was not an abscess at all, it was a HUGE tumor. He told me that it looked like a small bouncy ball and he was able to pull it right out. He said that it came right off the stem easily and surrounding tissue did not seem to be affected but that he could not be sure. He said that he was unable to determine where the root was located. He told me that it is very uncommon for rabbits to have malignant tumors but also that he has never seen such a large tumor in a rabbits mouth. He recommended sending it off for a biopsy. I should have those results back in 5-7days.
Have any of you ever heard of a tumor in a rabbits mouth!? The blood and pus that we all seen was because she was biting down on the tumor when she chewed. It seemed to grow in size over night. I did notice that she had been salviating more than normal for quite some time but not until they day i took her in did i see the roundness on her jawline.
They showed me the tumor. It was huge but it did not look cancerous. I say this because in my experience, areas in humans that are affected by cancer tend to be black. The only darkening on the tumor that I could see was where she was obviously chewing on it.
She is resting quietly on her favorite shelf with her bunny (stuffed). I’ve made her some critical care and she does not seem interested in it but she was sure excited for some raisins.
