Low Cost Spay and Neuter

More and more programs are now doing rabbit desexings. I’ve wondered for a while if we should start building a list of the ones that do. Also, to get some feedback from those that have utilized these services for their rabbits. What do you think? Just as an awareness that this option is out there really. It would still be the responsibility of the owner to check the credentials of the vets they take their rabbit to.

A quick general search term i use is “low cost spay and neuter” then add State and the word rabbit.

New Jersey has a House Bunny Society that you can buy Spay/Neuter certificates from. They are cheaper than getting it done at the vet without it. It does just pay for the surgery though, you still have to buy medication

I’d be happy with that since the surgery is the expensive part. How much are the certificates? Are they available to any NJ resident that applies for them?

You have to use a vet that takes them (I got a vet from the rabbit.org list who takes them). A spay is 99 and a neuter is 75

I’m useless to add anything for Edmonton, while we have a spay clinic they are dogs/cats only; for now anyways!

Gonna play devil’s advocate here. The problem I see with a Low Cost list is that it’s the most changeable factor. Next year a clinic or rescue may not get funding and raise their prices, or their good vet that did pro bono work left and another doesn’t help out as much, etc.

I can see adding recommended rescues and shelters or clinics that offer spays and neuters that come recommended to the resources we already list, but we haven’t really compiled a list of those, rather we refer to the HRS lists, which are very organized and computerized for easy searching. I’m not sure what Jen’s position is on this, but it may be too involved to compile and update. We also don’t allow negative comments in the forums on vets and places we Don’t like, so it may not comply with her rule on that either. Ask her?

There’s no harm in posting a thread that simply states: Check with your local Rescue or Shelter, which can be found in a search on these sites (insert links to HRS and Petfinders, etc.) to ask about Low Cost Speuters. Many are available.
Then members can just call and ask for current rates.

The vet has 30 years of experience. He has been at this clinic for five and does about 5 rabbit spays a year. He has not lost a rabbit yet, but will still tell you the risk of the surgeries. It costs $190 for a spay ( I didn’t ask about the cost for a neuter since Foo would be spayed). The staff I spoke with was very friendly, and this clinic is where our puppies were spayed a few months ago. They are located in Philly suburbs.

Napa Humane, Napa, California, $60 spay/$45 neuter. Clean brand new facility, got an appointment for later in the same week. Drop off at 8am, pick up at 3:30pm. She was up and eating by 7pm.

For anyone living in Minnesota, the Minnesota Spay Neuter Assistance Program (http://www.mnsnap.org/) will perform surgeries on dogs, cats, and rabbits for qualifying individuals/families. Neuters for bunnies are $40 and spays are $50; you also get a free nail trim and they give you pain medication to administer to your bunny over the next few days as well. You need to show proof of participation in a needs-based public assistance program (e.g. food stamps, disability, Medicaid, etc.) or show that your most recent income tax return is less than $40,000 per household, so the program isn’t for everyone, unfortunately. (Yay for being a poor grad student here :-p) I just had my bun neutered this morning and picked him up several hours ago. The doctors/staff were very knowledgeable and friendly, and so far Frankie is doing very well post-surgery 🙂

It’s good idea Jersey, and it’s something that gets my brain cells moving It just would definitely take a lot of time to compile a list state by state (city by city) but what I DID do is just added a section about Low Cost Spay & Neuter to the Vet list https://binkybunny.com/FORUM/tabid/54/aft/116849/Default.aspx, and I included the nooters link and Pam’s line about checking with local shelters for LCSN resources.

For anything more extensive, I would need to think about how it could be done. As forum threads it could get lengthy and hard to follow even if was subdivided by states. If we could create it more as a data base for people to enter in their recommendations (with a legal line removing any liability) then really that is ideal, but that takes time on our side. Thinking….thinking…..

Oh good!! I think that is adequate enough really. I was really meaning to create awareness that the option is out there. So it being under Info covers that. Discussion about it can could come up thread by thread basis. I know I’ve brought it up in a couple before which is why I’ve been thinking about it on and off.

Definitely do not want to create more work for ya!
