My new bunny uri caught his paw whilst running and unfortunately ripped one of his wee claws out. Its the middle claw and there has been alot of blood. He doesnt have any nail left the whole thing has been tore out. He doesnt seem too bothered but he has been constantly licking the area. The area has finally stopped bleeing but I have no idea what to do next.

      thanks in advance

Hi! I’ve heard about this happening to people before, and I know its scary because of all the blood.  I think what you need to do is check this area once and awhile and make sure it stays clean (seems like he is doing a good job of that so far!) You would want to keep checking to make sure that if a new nail grows in, it grows in correctly, and also make sure that an abcess doesn’t form around the area.  Maybe your vet could give you some kind of disinfectant?  I know you should NOT use neosporin plus, but it probably wouldn’t hurt to clean it with soap and warm water to make sure he doesn’t get any infection in the wound.

I think he’ll be OK, just keep the area clean!!

one of my bunnies lost a claw once… didn’t bleed too badly. We took him to the vet and they gave him a baytril injection and some ibuprofen (he wouldn’t put him paw on the ground). We just checked it twice a day to make sure it didn’t get infected. It was fine though and grew back no problem. I’m sure Uri will be fine. : )

Do you still see at least a stub?  Or are you saying it’s just a hole there now?

Checking for infection is the most important and though it is correct that you should not use Neosporin PLUS, (because it has pain killers in there that are toxic to rabbits) but you can use regular neosporin.

Is it still bothering him?  Is he leaving it alone?
