Long car ride

Me and my husband have to drive from California to Nevada to see my husbands dying grandpa… Cadbury is 6 weeks now and will be joining us because he’s not weaned and he’s my baby and I don’t want to leave him. Any advice for a 6ish hour car ride? He’s used to having the whole house all day for the most part so I’m worried about stress. TIA for the advice.

How long would you be staying over there? Even though he is not weaned I would try to have someone else take care of him since 6 hours is quite a long time.

six weeks is old enough to be weaned but I wouldn’t say old enough for a long car ride. I wouldn’t want to take my adult buns on a car ride that long, I cant imagine taking Bramble when he was six weeks old. However we don’t always have choices about these things so if you really cant get someone to watch him in his own environment I guess what you need to do is get the biggest carrier you can, fill it with things he is used to like blankets and plenty of hay and try to take regular breaks on the drive. My boys hate the car so I would also have some bunny first aid supplies on hand such as critical care and gas meds just in case the stress reduces his appetite. Also be wary of the temperature in the car

I can say I take my bun for a 6 hour ride twice a year to reach our holiday location. Buns don’t eat/drink while moving and the car is likely to stress them, so my best advice is to keep him inside his carrier with a pad to absorbe pee topped with a blanket and hay, then make frequent stops (like every 2 hours max) to let him out and eat/drink (a large cardboard box can do the trick if you don’t own a large carrier/crate). Do mind temperature too, as kistyol said.

I can’t say about age, so do ask your vet for advice as a full health check is never a bad idea before leaving home. If you’re going away for just a couple of days it’s not a bad idea to let him stay home or board at a friend’s house (without other pets, since he’s very young)

Cadbury is a cottontail and won’t take to other people around him. He gets stressed about other people other then our family. That’s why I was wondering about car rides. Thanks for the advice

I’ve taken 2 of my bunnies on 5-hour car rides. Lancelot isn’t phased by much. I regularly take him on my weekends out of town. He eats and drinks in the car. Guin won’t eat or drink in the car, and if I’m driving during the day, she won’t be eating or drinking anyway, coz she sleeps during the day. She will nibble on some veggies whe I stop for gas/coffee. When I get to the final destination, she settles down quickly. It helps to have them in the same travel cage for comfort. If I take Lancelot on his own, I always bring his stuffy with. Be mindful of the temp, but also where the cage is in relation to the sun/shade. You dont’ want sun on yoru bunny, even if the temp is decent. Water messes while driving, so keep food.water/breaks to car stops. Lancelot actually does pretty well on my lap. He falls asleep with his head on my arm. I wouldn’t try that wth Guin. The first car ride or two are the scariest for the bun. Mine have had so many car rides, it’s really not so bad anymore.
