Hi friends! Lately I’ve been thinking about Cinnabun and how she must get lonely when I’m not there to spend time with her. My situation: I’m currently living in a dorm, I live in a single as I am an RA. Cinnabun is free roam in my room which is completely bunny proof. We spend a good amount of time together. She usually sleeps during the day, from 10am-4pm. I feed her in the morning at 7am when I wake up and sip tea and watch TV with her. I get back from class around 5 pm most days and if I don’t have to go out at night, I’ll stay in my dorm with bun and do homework, so we get a good solid 5 or 6 hours together. (she likes to walk all over my laptop and get pets while I’m studying ) If I have to go out in the evening I’m usually always back by 10 the latest, and I probably spend 3 hours cuddling with her and watching TV.

She’s a rescue bun and she’s 6 yrs old, I’m not sure who her previous owners were before I got her. I’ve only had her since July but she is at the point where she is very comfortable around me (she actually licked me for the first time a few weeks ago which was exciting!) She’s kind of a diva and is a more aggressive/territorial bun (she is spayed however). I get worried that she gets bored sometimes, though. She’s awake and lounging throughout the night but obviously I can’t stay up all night to spend time with her.

I have been thinking about adopting a second bun but I would have to wait until summer time, and even then I’m not sure if that is enough time to get them bonded. This is because I’ll either be at my parents’ home or in an apartment over the summer, which would be a much bigger space and allow for the new rabbit to settle in, pre bonding, etc. but I don’t really know what I would do in the dorm if they are not bonded by that time, because I get that bonding can take a long time and I would like for them both to continue to be free roam. It’s very early to be thinking about this but I like to take a lot of time before making decisions like this  I would want to get a neutered male rabbit around the same age, and I don’t think it would be a problem since the shelter near me always has more bunnies than they can hold. I’ve had people tell me that rabbits should always be kept in pairs and shouldn’t be alone but I’ve gotten mixed messages about this so I’m not quite sure what to think! Cinnabun has obviously been alone for 6 years (to mine and the shelter’s knowledge) and I can already tell that she is definitely a more dominant and aggressive rabbit. Any insight to this would be appreciated. thanks so much everybun!!!

If she’s not showing signs of loneliness, I wouldn’t feel overly concerned or pressured to get another rabbit asap. If she’s displaying destructive behavior or is constantly lethargic, then perhaps, but if she’s happy, I wouldn’t stress too much. Mixing up her environment will help to keep her engaged and enriched.

Can you talk to the shelters near you about adopting a bun on the condition that he bonds with Noodles? I was in a similar situation to you a few months ago when I tried to get a bondmate for Thor. We live in a small apartment and she is free roam in the whole place so we don’t have the space for 2 separate buns either. So they agreed to let us foster a male bun, with the plan to adopt him when they bonded.

Long story short, they never did bond . We’re in the minority here so don’t be scared away by my experience! It was super nice though that we could know that he would have a good home even if it didn’t work out with us. He got adopted within a week of going back to the shelter and now lives in his forever home I’ll be trying to bond Thor again in a few months using the same foster-to-adopt plan they have.

Side note, with agressive territorial females it can be very helpful to bond in totally neutral territory (your parent’s house) so that may work very well in your favor!

Edit: Posted at the same time, I also agree with Wick that if she seems happy as a single you shouldn’t feel pressured to get another bun right away or perhaps at all! I do think buns can be happy as singles and it sounds like she does get a lot of attention from you. I would make sure it is also something you want and that you’ll be happy with two buns

I’ll also add that Wick is alone and I work full-time, and aside from a slightly monotonous life which I try to enrich by randomly placing cardboard boxes and obstacles everywhere, he’s quite happy.

@Wick She’s not very destructive and is actually quite picky when it comes to toys! She will only chew a very certain type of apple stick that I give her. I’m not quite sure if I would say she is “happy,” but rather content? She gets excited when I get back and loves to run around a bit, but will spend most of her time just sitting there staring at the wall. It’s very hard to entertain her, I feel. She usually just sits there and does nothing if I’m not petting her…

@ThorBunny that’s an awesome idea! I had no idea that shelters did that. I definitely will ask around to see if I can do such a thing! I’ve heard of some shelters doing speed “bunny dating” so that might be something I’ll look into.

I definitely would be happy with and wouldn’t mind two buns, I just feel so bad leaving her alone throughout the night!

Does she like to climb and is she curious whenever you place something new in the room? I’d start enriching her environment by moving some things or getting crafty with boxes, so she can have novel things to work with and just view, rather than the same setting. It wouldn’t be too stressful, as the room will mostly look and will smell the same, there just might be some items she can climb on which weren’t there before or something.

I leave videos playing on in the background for Wick when I leave for work so there’s some white noise for him.
