They’re great!!! I think the photos above, especially prevalent on the internet, make a good case for why so many people wind up wanting to give their child or children a companion bunny and purchase one, usually as a baby, from the pet store. Unfortunately, what the parents all too often don’t realize is that the scenario below is the result of months, sometimes years of love – patience, tolerance, care, reasearch, hard work, and self-discipline with the rabbit and letting it cultivate mutual affection on its own terms, at its own call, and sometimes only after months of being allowed to be a reclusive, fearful, mistrusting, even aggressive little creature given to nips and biting. The hugs one sees in a rabbit that has been allowed to become affectionate come long and hard. And because, they’re often expected on demand when the impulse to cuddle emerges in the child and parent with none of the carefully devoted expanse of patience, tolerance, and devotion, the relationship turns sour almost immediately and after a few weeks or months of deploring the animal’s aggression exacerbated by the owner’s sometimes failure to potty-train, the animal is no longer wanted and is let loose in a park to fend for itself and usuallly wind up mauled by a predator animal or starved, or left on someone’s doorstep to fates unknown or taken to an overburdened rescue shelter that euthanizes rabbits it can’t adopt in a timely manner. I love these pictures that are born of the hard work and continuous love of someone as much as anyone but I also know that chances are their publicity on places like utube, etc. will promote such unfortunate scenarios, or worse, the animal will be abused because it’s not found to be affectionate. Anyway, I thought it so doggone cute I couldn’t resist sharing it with you. Sorry, I didn’t mean to burden you with this sad story, most of you know it already, it’s certainly not my intention to be depressing. I just think that a disclaimer or such, accompanying such photos as might help to prevent some or a lot of misfortune that befalls these lovely little prey animals, that, CAN be such delightful pets and companions.
