My dentally challenged little guy, Toby could use some healing vibes this week.
We went to the vet yesterday because he had started sneezing, had some clear nose discharge, a bit wheezy and some strange places on his back feet. All of this popped up in the last few days. He’s very active and doesn’t act sick, but Dr. Irving says he has an slight upper respiratory infection so he’s on baytril and probiotics. He’s in isolation on the dresser by my bed and is very PO’d about the whole situation and thumped all night long.
The odd places on his back feet she thinks is an allergic reaction to something in the bunny room. They were like a dime sized lump of matted fur, one on the top of each back foot and one on the bottom. I had tried bathing and combing them out to see what was going on underneath, but it was like the fur was glued. They finally shaved them off and found a small area of little granulated bumps under neath each lump of fur.
They’re not abscess, not cuts or burns and weren’t oozing, so she clean scrubbed them down and I’m putting an antibiotic ointment spray on them twice a day. She said it’s not typical sore hocks and is going to do some research before we go back in a week.
I clean the bunny room floor every night with a very diluted mixture of hot water and vinegar, could he possibly be allergic to it? Sometimes he does go running through the area before I can get it rinsed good and dry. He’s also nearly completely forgotten his litterbox habits since Charlie came so he might be getting into some of his pee during the day if he’s up there guarding the front gate.
Poor little dude, he is so cute when he’s mad, but I hope he heals up quickly. Pringles is not a happy girl with one of her boy toys absent.
Edited to add: We checked the others carefully, no one else has this going on.
Oh no! Poor little Toby -huge healing vibes to him.
I do have to wonder if those feet problems are related to wet floors – I know their skin is pretty sensitive and if you don’t get them completely dry they get irritated.
Keep us updated on him.
(((Hugs and Vibes))) to both of you!
Sending some good healing vibes to Toby.

(((((((((toby))))))))) poor lil guy! i hope you find out about his foot problem and he`s all fixed up soon ![]()
totally healing vibes for Toby. May he heal nicely and quickly
You have a great vet. He is no doubt getting the very best care between her and you. It’s a pity he can’t stay with his bunbuds.

How’s Toby today?
thanks for asking, bunny vibes must be very strong. the redness was gone from the places on his feet already when I put the spray on this morning. He’s not happy, but he’s inputing and outputting very well. (pellets in, pellets out)
The wheezing is about the same, I hope to see improvement there soon as I get as few more doses in him. He is such a sweetie. Pringles comes running to the gate in the bunny room every time she sees me, hoping I’ll bring him back soon.
I am grateful for Dr. Irving. She mentioned the other day that she’s shorthanded on the holidays to get everyone at the clinic and the boarding section taken care of so I volunteered to come in and help. Nothing like building up some brownie points!
I’ve also found that Toby’s the main culprit in messing up the floor in the bunny room. I had suspected all of them since Charlie came, but with Toby in the other room for the time being, the bunny room is staying clean.
Any tips to retrain Toby while he’s confined to the store bought cage would be welcomed! He has a small litter box with soft carefresh, but he’s going on the towel half the time anyway.
Brownie points with the vet is always good!
Glad Toby’s feet are improving. I hope the baytril kicks in soon too! I do wonder if keeping him away from Pringles and Daisy is a good idea – I understand why you are doing it, but I wonder if he could use their moral support.
If you are keeping him in the cage, I would suggest removing the towel if he insists on peeing on it.
More vibes to Toby.
I asked Dr. Irving twice because of the trio bond, but she was pretty firm about keeping him away because of the respiratory problem, she said he was definitely contagious. I hope there’s not a problem putting them back together next week. The bond between Pringles and him was so different from the others, it was love (or lust) at first sight and she dumped Daisy and refused to leave Toby’s side from the first time she saw him. Must have been those teeth. So I’m hoping that’s still there and I may just have to work with him and Daisy, although they were pretty tight too.
What could I use on the cage floor to discourage him? I threw the wire floor away a long time ago and the metal is really cold. What about a disposable roasting pan the size of the cage so the whole thing is a litter box?
Well, since it’s doctor’s order :~) I wonder if a small rug would work….maybe it would be less tempting to pee on it since it’s not quite so soft.
re:what to put on the cage floor…
for pinky i use a plastic dishpan from the dollar store. i have an extra so i can rotate a fresh one and give the used one a good vinegar soapy water soak. i lay newspaper in the bottom and then toss a cup of yesterdays news for litter and it works great. i have the plastic bottom of a store-bought cage thats about 4″ deep (the wire top and wire floor removed) that the dishpan fits into and fills about half way. so the old cage bottom is half hay / half dishpan with litter.
You could put down a piece of cardboard the size of the cage. Rip off the top smooth layer to expose the rippled part and he should love that. It’s very warm to sit on, I have tried it.
I’ll try both of those tonight, it would be great to get him litter trained again. I’ll get him some more soft litter. I can see where the hay/ pellets I’ve been using in the litter boxes would have been rough on his poor feet in that condition
In order to preserve his bonds, use a stunt double with his bonded trio’s scent to leave with him. Rescent the double often.
