Hi guys. So I have been using equine pellets for Bart and Milhouse’s liitterboxes for over a month now. It is cheap and absorbent and all around good. I’ve also tried to DIY a screen setup for them.

        1) Everything seemed okay but clean up is just becoming more and more strenuous. I don’t feel like I’m doing the whole litterbox thing right and am wasting so much litter and hay. I’ve tried different amounts of the litter under the screen, with some hay on top next to a hay rack. Milhouse pulls all the hay into her box and uses it. When I go to clean it, it seems like most of the hay is soiled in the box instead of her having ate it. Do I just toss all the hay and poop together? I saw a video where someone had this kind of setup and they easily lifted the hay off and discarded the poop, then placed the hay back on the screen. Seems so easy…but its so messy with my bun’s boxes. Am I missing something?

        2) Equine pellets. How much do you guys put in the litterboxes? Once they get wet, its like the moisture spreads. I thought it would be easier to scoop out the wet stuff, but now it just feels like I have to toss the whole box every other day. Which is leading to a lot of litter being used.

Also, my buns are not free roam unless I am home. In addition to their hay racks, or hay in the litterbox, how many other ways should I be giving them hay? scattered?

I’m always wasting hay since my bun likes to pull the hay out of his hay rack and not eat it. If he pulls a lot out I take the top half of the hay and put it back in his hay rack since he only pulls it out and puts it right under the hay rack where he doesn’t pee or poop. I don’t have a screen on my litter box cause i seem to not need one. I clean his litter box everyday. I put 2 1/2 scoops of litter into his litter box (his litter is called yesterdays news it is a paper pelleted litter). I’m not sure how much those scoops equal out to but I can figure that out if you want (just ask me if you do). I don’t know the measurements of my litter box but it’s a cat litter box ( I can also figure that out if you would like). I also put about 1-2 handfuls of bedding (carefresh,Kaytee, etc) over me litter because my bun isn’t litter trained and it seems to help him.

I use pretty much the same setup as you do, pelleted wood litter (I use those wood stove pellets, pretty sure it is the same as equine pellets) in a medium cat sized litter box with a litter screen on top! BTW I’m not sure if you can get the wood stove pellets where you are, but they tend to be very cheap ($5 for 40lbs) and are 100% wood, so safe.

Here is my litter box routine (although I only have one rabbit): I start by putting a solid layer – maybe 1/2″ deep – in the bottom of the box, then put the screen on top and a handful of hay in the front. I’ve noticed she only pees in the back corners of the box, so if I put hay in the front it tends not to get peed/pooped on. I don’t have a hay rack. Every day then I take the screen with leftover hay and poops off, dump it in the trash and scoop out back of the litter that is soaked in pee. If I start with a thick layer it tends to not soak around too much, so I can just take out that portion. Then I put the screen back on, repeat! One fill of litter tends to last me 3-4 days before I totally empty everything out and clean the box.

I do end up wasting a lot of hay, I would say that out of hay I put out for her she eats 50-60% and the rest gets wasted… its not ideal, but I get hay in bulk so it’s not too expensive

Bale hay – cheap – easy and inexpensive to waste 🙂
