How do I set up the cage for liter training.  I tried different liters/bedding one in the cage and something different in the liter box (9X13 baking dish) they would still use their bedding. Friday night I took all the bedding out of the cage left the liter box in the cage and used totally different liter all the buns are using the liter box to pee in but not to poop in.  The other bunny Bubba (who was just returned): I tried the same with him and he totally ignored the liter pan and peed in the hay that I gave him to eat.   Will the buns eventually use the litler pan to poop and pee in.  When I have them out of their cages muy livingroom looks like a poop fest.

the pooping sounds like marking that will most likely diminish after they are neutered. the thing that really counts is the pee. if they are peeing in the box, count yourself lucky. especially this early and before they are altered. do you put hay in the litterbox?

I second that on the poops…Tucker is litter trained as far as peeing but he poops all over to mark..he’ll be getting neutered soon though so I am hoping to see that diminish with that.  If they are peeing though….maybe it’s because there is bedding on the cage floor?  It might be hard for them to distinguish between the bedding they should pee/poop on and the bedding that they play/sit/nap on.  I put a washable carpet on the floor of Tucker’s cage.  I vacuum it nightly (or if I am lazy or exhausted every other day) and it’s been almost two weeks now and I haven’t had to wash it yet.  I will probably wash it next weekend.  Since doing this I have seen that Tucker uses his litter boxes for pee consistently and  for alot of his poops..and like I said I am hoping that neutering helps with the remainder of that.

Another thing to try…depending on how big the cage is …maybe more then one box is needed? I gave Tucker two, one on his top floor and one on the bottom floor.  I also put in a basket of hay which he decided was an awesome third litter box so I need to now actually buy a new litter box for a total of THREE in his cage…which is only for one bunny..sheesh..but it does help to keep things clean!!

These are great ideas!  Layla is doing alright so far with peeing in her litter box.  I consider myself fortunate as I’ve now only had her for 3 days and I’ve only noticed 2 or 3 “accidents” outside the litter box.  As for her little “presents”, I was concerned at first that I saw them everywhere until I noticed that the majority were in her box.  I have me one smart little rabbit!

Plus, I read somewhere that her little presents make good fertilizer so hopefully that one plant I have that I can’t seem to get to grow will flourish now!
