I need to get my buns a new litter scoop because they’re poop always falls through the holes in the scoop. I don’t know where to get a scoop with holes small enough so that the poop doesn’t fall through!! Thanks for everyone who can answer this Q. ![]()
Why are you scooping? Can’t you just dump the whole thing?
Yes, just dump the whole box.
Well i dont want to have to buy litter every week. And some people scoop their litter. Im on a budget so. Btw we replace the whole thing every week when we clean their enclosure. Have any helpful suggestions??
I guess I don’t know how you would scoop rabbit litter. I use Yesterday’s News, you can’t really “strain” it with a scoop. What kind of litter are you using?
Yes, what kind of litter because even so you shouldn’t have to buy a bag a week….
I am also on a very tight budget, that said I completely dump the rabbits’ box every couple of days, use the pet shop’s equivalent to Yesterday’s News (think its called Mewsprint) and a bag lasts me well over a month. So I too am curious to know what it is you are using. And I sure as heck couldn’t scoop mine if I wanted too.
That said, the Binky Bunny Store does have several litter box solutions.
im using yesterdays new. So do i have to through away the litter everyday???????

There are about 10 different litter scoops at petsmart.com – http://www.petsmart.com/search/index.jsp?kwCatId=&kw=litter%20scoop&origkw=litter+scoop&sr=1&f=PAD/psNotAvailInUS/No. I don’t know if one of these would be what you are looking for. If you get a scoop with holes or slots that are very close together, you may not be able to sift out the clean litter, which is what I assume you are trying to do. So you still wouldn’t be able to separate the poop from the clean litter. Usually, the poop and the wet litter is all in one area in the litter box, and you would just scoop that particular area out, leaving the rest of the clean litter behind.
You would do that daily, then every few days or so, you should dump the entire contents and clean out the litter box, then refill it.
Yeah, I don’t see how you could get a scoop with large enough slots for the litter to fall through while still catching the poop. I like tobyluv’s suggestion, if it is just one corner then you could just scoop all of that out. A mini dustpan would even work for that.
You can get the screen that is sold here if you just want to remove the poo. I do that and just use a spoon to scoop out the corners where the litter is usually soaked more.
You only need a thin layer of litter as well – it does not need to be filled to the top of the litter pan.
ok thanks
If you’re looking for something cheaper untreated wood stove pellets/horse stall bedding is very cheap if you can find it.
But I agree with everyone else I have no idea how you would sift through it. I would just use a thin layer of litter, cover it with hay, and dump it every to every other day. By thin layer I mean I put in enough to cover the bottom and a little extra and that’s it.
I use wood pellet litter so when it gets wet it falls apart completely. My litter box has a plastic grate that catches the poo and then underneath is the litter. When I clean her box I dump the poo pan and then use a scoop (it came with the litter box) or dump the whole tray into this plastic veggy strainer thing I found at the dollar store. It looks like this:

And then just give it a good shake. All the used litter falls into the bottom tray to be tossed and the unused pellets are big enough (at least on mine) that they don’t fall through and I dump them back into her litter box. I vertually have no waste this way so it saves on litter and my bunny hasn’t had any problems with this method. As long as you use a screen to separate the poo first then it is quite easy to sift out the used portion and minimize your litter costs.
ok ok! im just going to throw out the one corner my bunnies use. im not a clueless bunny owner… ![]()
Who said you were clueless?
You’re not clueless. =] It takes time to get a good system down for how you like to clean your buns’ cage & litter box. Especially since everyone has a different cleaning system. It took me a good couple of months to figure out the brand of litter that I liked and how I liked best to clean it. Some people like to use grates, others don’t. I don’t use grates in some of my litter boxes mainly because they don’t fit them. So for those litter boxes I figured out that if I put a layer of soft hay (like Orchard Grass) on top of the litter I can “pick up” the poos with the layer hay. It sort of traps the poos in the hay. And I pick out the poos that I missed. It’s not the most ideal cleaning method but it’s the easiest solution that I came up with.
What you are looking for is the shovel type of scoop right? I understand, I prefer those too. I looked and looked and came across one that actually has the option to close the grid so it turns into a shovel. It’s very sturdy too. It’s called the Dura Scoop No spill.
If you just want the grid/holes to be smaller, then this scoop is great for that too because you can adjust the grid openings.
But it’s kinda pricey for a scoop, but it will last a very long time, unlike other scoops that can crack over time. This is what I use, and I liked it so much we started selling in our store.

Unfortunately it is being discontinued due to lack of sales. I asked the owners about this and it looks like they just didn’t market enough to rabbit owners, and cat owners don’t see the reason for the shovel, as they prefer to sift aspect. I wish they would reconsider, but I understand them not wanting to take a chance as it is expensive because they have to manufacture a ton of them. So I basically cleared out what our distributor a few months ago, and now we’re getting down to the last 20.
I have the scoop from the BB store and it’s really nice. I have used it to remove poo for our garden.
Have you looked into other litter alternatives that are cheaper? I have spent less than $50 a year on litter for the past few years by using wood stove pellets (that was for two bunnies). Before wood stove pellets, I was spending $200 a year on a paper-based pellet. It’s worth looking into.
