I bought a bag of additive-free wood stove pellets, but it says not to use as equine bedding because it may contain black walnut. I know walnut is on the toxic wood list for buns. Assuming Luna doesn’t decide to taste-test a few of these pellets, are they ok to use for her litter?

I want to know this too because I watch StromyRabbits and she said she uses wood stove pellets for litter.

Interesting that they put that on the label. The manufacturers must know how much WSP are popular for other uses. I guess they are covering themselves legally.

Im not certain about the black walnut. Woods that are listed as toxic normally due to the sap. So fresh wood is more an issue there. I think the pelleting process removes much of the aromatic components that can cause issues for rabbits. Im thinking sap/resin is removed a lot also??

It sounds like the pellets are predominantly another type of wood?

I thought the same thing about the disclaimer, plus they (American Wood Fibers) also sell equine bedding too, so they probably don’t want people thinking any wood pellet they make is ok for any use. I would’ve bought the equine bedding, but I haven’t found a place near me yet that either sells it out of the store or does free shipping.

It doesn’t specify the wood species – it just says it is a “hardwood” mix. I think I’ll give them a try, but I’m going to make sure Luna doesn’t try to eat them first .
