My partner is, as some of you know, way too sensitive about the rabbit’s smell. If they so much as pee once into their litter box, he’s complaining they stink. This has been true with WSP, paper pellets, aspen shavings, etc etc. I’ve also had trouble getting them to USE their litter boxes a lot, they just suddenly decide “That floor looks better” … urgh.
So… I tried WSP on bottom and a thin layer of aspen shavings on top of those. The shavings are comfortable on their feet and prevent them munching on the pellets. The urine goes right through them though, only getting soaked in as it sits on the plastic of the litter box if you use them alone. The WSP however, absorb the urine. The shavings give a “layer” of dry over the WSP, which prevents the smell escaping at all and keeps the urine off their feet. It also mostly covers the droppings, once they hop in / out and kick it around, so it’s a nice overlayer.
I didn’t clean the litter boxes this weekend cause we were busy. I didn’t hear a single “OMG THEY STINK” complaint.
Also as a note: Simply Pine is way better imo than Feline Pine. The pine pellets in feline pine are small, whereas Simply Pine has long, thick pellets. Feline pine tends to break up into very dusty sawdust, the Simply Pine due to the larger size, expands into a “clump” of sawdust and isn’t as dusty. And it’s easier to get a full coating with less litter with the longer pellets.
I’ve stopped using litter screens with this combo. And the buns have so far not used the floor once. *crosses fingers*
