Litter box questions…

Couple of questions:

1. Do rabbits *need* bedding? The person we are adopting the rabbit from claims it never uses bedding, but she just puts some liner on the bottom of the box, and puts hay on top.

2. Should hay be inside or outside of the box? I heard some people say it isn’t good, but others say it is. So confusing… 

3. Are those disposable litter boxes in the pet stores a good idea?

1.Rabbit don’t NEED bedding, but it is nice for them to rest on when they want.

2. It should be outside the litter box in a feeder, Next to the litter box. Rabbits tend to poop while eating, so having them next to each other increases the chances of your rabbit not pooping outside the litterbox . This is so you don’t confuse the bunny on where it should go. If it see’s hay inside the box and in the feeder, the bunny might try to eat from both. You want your rabbit to eat fresh dry hay, not ones in the litterbox. So you fill the litterbox with something else!

3. Never heard of these!

Some people put some hay in the litter box, but the problem with this is that it gets dirty very quickly and so it is wasted which is why most people, as Emmsy said, put the hay either next to the litter box or like me it’s hung slightly above it (from a hay rack) so when sitting in the little box the bunnies can reach it . Be careful of hay racks in case the bunny jumps up onto the top they don’t get hurt or stuck between any wire bars.

And no, indoor bun doesn’t need bedding as such to keep warm but it is nice for them to have the choice and certainly to dig a fleece should they wish. Be aware that some rabbits like peeing and pooping on soft areas, so if you give them a nice fleece or Blankey they may use it as a toilet. Some do some don’t.

Bunnies outdoors would need straw bedding to keep warm in winter.

Most members here use plastic litter trays (like a cat litter tray or big plastic storage box) with paper, or wood pellets or such…. and it’s cleaned out regularly (once a day / 2 days)

I use carefresh in my bunny’s litter boxes. Then put hay at one side for them to eat from. I don’t like hay racks and neither do my bunnies.
