I have been reading different posts here and on rabbits and their litter recommendations.

I get that pine shaving and cedar are very unhealthy. I have known that for years. Some articles say even kiln dried shavings are bad. I understand that. However, quite a few rabbit owners use equine pellets which are pine based. So why are equine pellets safe and kiln dried pine shavings not? Pine is pine and the chemicals are chemicals.

Does the equine pellet process remove all or just about of the chemicals vs kiln dried pine shavings only remove most? Is that the difference?

I am looking to buy something more local since winter is around the corner. We buy stuff in a city that is a bit away. Great this time of year.

We can’t even buy Aspen locally. Yesterday’s News isn’t either. But we will continue to travel if needed depending on your expertise responses.

If you’re in the United States, do you have a Pet Supplies Plus store nearby? They do carry the major brands of paper litter including Yesterday’s News and Carefresh, and also have their own brand of paper litter (which the local rabbit rescue uses as well as Carefresh). In fact, I think Petco or Petsmart have house brands of paper litter too.

I think the idea behind not using shavings, someone correct me if I’m wrong, is that the dust from them and the thinness of the shavings can be inhaled by bunnies, which is obviously bad for their respiratory systems. I use compressed pine pellets and there’s never any dust, it eliminates smell, and it cleans in 5 seconds.

We have to drive to the city for a PetSmart and Petco. We have a tractor supply but they are limited on litters. More farming here. And our local Walmart is useless. Everytime they carry something pet oriented they only have it for a few months and then they tell you to order it online. I would hate to have to do so. I am the type of person who likes to see the product in person so I can read all sides of the product to see about any changes that may or may not have accurred. Maybe I am too picky or too caring you choose?

If you have tractor supply, just get compressed pine pellets (equine pellets) from them. we get them from there for only $7 per 40 pounds. so it’s a bang for your buck. I have 3 litter boxes and the stuff lasts about 3 months.

Yes A&B the pine shavings are bad as they have many chemicals left in it along with the bad fumes. The pine equine pellets from tractor supply are kiln dried and have all the bad chemicals taken out. They are like $6 a bag and can last weeks and controls the smell so good.

I think they might do bulk discounts if you buy a lot. I need to see if they do that haha
