› FORUM › DIET & CARE › (literal) fur ball
So, Kuro’s at the hospital again. Last night he had to have emergency surgery to remove a solid ball of fur that lodged in between his stomach and intestine. We still don’t know if he’ll make it, I’m about to go visit him…
I’m destroyed. I’ve been brushing him all through his molt, been cleaning the loose hair off his pen and cage.. he had NO symptoms up until yesterday when I felt the ball in his belly and rushed him to the ER.
I don’t know what to say, mostly I don’t know what I did wrong… anyone had similar experiences? any suggestion about hair management if he’ll come back alive to me?
Oh, Muchelle, I’m so sorry
Poor little lord. I can’t imagine what more you could have done to minimize his exposure to loose fur. It’s amazing that you felt the blockage at all, really. Darling Kuro… he was on such a good medical streak, too. I really hope he pulls through and bosses his way back to full health. Chewie and I are rooting for him and sending nose boops and ear rubs and hugs for you (((((((((Kuro)))))))))
Oh Muchelle. You did nothing wrong, golly couldn’t have done any more !!!
How you felt the hump, golly, well done.
if he didnt have any symptoms then hopefully you caught it in time.
He’s a little fighter.
(((( kuro ))))
Muchelle, I’m so sorry. So glad you felt the lump, that was really clever of you! You didn’t do anything wrong, quite the contrary.
I’m not sure, but I think management of blockage-prone rabbits is a lot about hydration. If fluids by mouth aren’t enough, sub Q fluids will also help loosen up a blockage/ maintain a healthy consistency of the intestinal contents . Some vets will teach you how to give sub Q fluids at home, if it has to be done on a daily basis.
((((((Kuro))))))
So, I visited him. He was better than last night. Ate by himself, peed, did some poops. He totally hated me when I tried to touch him, which is totally like him.
He had some temperature so the vets told me he won’t be in the clear at least until Sunday, so we keep waiting…
I told the doc he was using a bowl and she said it’s totally possible he shed in the bowl and drank it up (even if I cleaned) and that he needed more brushing. I’ve recently started a relationship so I spend sat-sun to my guy’s place once every 2 weeks… this month I was away 2 weekends in a row (so 4 days) and vet said it’s possible that less brushing was enough to fill him up. Idk what to make of this info as yet, still feeling like s***
Thanks for your words guys, I hope the good vibes reach him and he can be home sunday night or monday
@Bam, sadly I know how to give him subQ fluids. Vet said to switch him to the bottle instead of the bowl and brush him like crazy during the rest of the shed. I’m thinking about buying the Furminator brush (the one for long-haired cats), maybe it’s more efficient…
Don’t. It’s way too brutal on bunny skin (the shelter tried it).
I’m glad he’s showing signs of being on the mend. He’s a fighter, remember.
And please stop beating yourself up. You did everything you could. Now you’ll try a few different/new things. If we all had 20/20 hindsight…. etc etc
Continued vibes to the tiny dark lord (((((((((Kuro)))))))))
Oh that wasn’t very nice of the vet to suggest hat because you were away one night of the weekend for two weekends in a row that this caused it!!!! Poor you. It really cant be soley because of that. Zou and Henry don’t drink at all bcause i think they have waaaaaay than enough water in the 6-8 endives they eat per day. (They certainly pee enough!)
Could you find a high in water veg (lettuce) that will help with the fur journey….?
Ps. Congrats on the reason why you were away…
![]()
Oh no, Muchelle. Im sorry to read what’s being going on with Kuro. Sending {{{vibes}}} his way!
I suspect this may come back to his teeth situation, tbh. Which is just rotten luck, nothing to do with you as an owner. I know enough rabbit owners whose rabbits live in carpets of their own fur and don’t get fur balls. The high fibre diet is supposed to sweep the fur out of their tract. It also keeps their gut moving at optimum speed. Perhaps its a combination of his not being able to get good size fibre through his system due to his teeth along with possible abnormally narrow areas in his gi tract??
Just another thought – does Kuro tend to chew things like fabric, rubber, cardboard and paper? Dental buns can sometime consume paper and cardboard as a way to get easy fibre but it can cause them issues.
@jerseygirl: Yes, he chews cardboard and paper but he spits it out entirely (he can chew it only when monitored). Doc said they only extracted fur matted together by water.. so he likely kept drinking and licking himself.
Today I couldn’t talk with the doc cause the team was in the ER for an emergency, but the nurse (that is also a rabbit owner) said she sees him better than last night. He ate, drank, peed. Still no poop but he’s having the usual post-anesthesia colic. He’s still needing some syringe feeding and still has some fever. Tonight I’ll talk with the vet squad. We’re about 48 hours away from the surgery so they might be able to tell me what happens now.
For sure he recognized me and growled at me numerous times, then he had a soft moment and face-planted against my hand to sleep there for a bit.
(@Vienna: hehe
thanks! luckily bf is here this weekend…)
Oh, sweetpea… ![]()
He still has a temperature, but they did an ultrasound and his intestine seems moving fine. He pooped, peed, is drinking and eating (still needed some syringe feeding). If fever subsides he might be send back home tomorrow night or monday morning…
I hope this damn fever goes away. I’m not qualified enough to monitor his temperature while minding the surgical wound on his belly…
Feeding him chilled veg might help bring down his temp.
for the little lord.
(I know I’m being a psycho these days, still elaborating what happened… >____< )
Umm… no. You’re a bunny parent. We care. ![]()
Surely, if the fever is still there and finances allow, you could ask they keep him a couple of days more…. ![]()
Finances allow, but he’s so stressed I feel that I have to get him home asap (he’s been at the hospital since thursday afternoon already).. I guess I’ll learn how to take the temperature
Lol
yup you will….
. (((( kuro ))))
Poor baby…
Sending some ((((Recovery Vibes)))))
If you haven’t seen it already, thuis is a very good video on how to take a bun’s temp. http://rabbit.org/how-to-take-a-rabbits-temperature/
It’s surprisingly easy, although Kuro has a wound on his tum that of course complicates it. It’s of course best if you have a quick thermometer (10-20 sec) and preferably one with a flexible tip. New boyfriend can help hold Kuro perhaps? Sooner or later this guy must be bun-trained anyway =) (I’m joking, of course, but it really is helpful to have an extra pair of hands).
Many more vibes for him (((((Kuro)))))
Tomorrow I’m signing papers to take him home. Fever is still coming and going (when the antibiotic’s coverage ends, it goes back up to 41°C and they aren’t sure how to explain it).
Ultrasound went well, GI organs are working fine… so I’ll risk it. I’m hoping to God that fever is coming from acute stress and that he’ll settle down once in his own enviroinment… I don’t have a good feeling about this, but there isn’t anything else I can do. The more he boards at the hospital the more he’ll feel abandoned and scared with all the noise and other smells.
My hope is that in reality he has a light fever + stress derived fever. Still don’t know what to make of all this, I’m still convinced I’m going to lose him soon, but at least if it happens, it will happen at home and it’s a good enough consolation. (yeah i’ll stop being melodramatic now, sorry guys <3 )
No, no, please don’t say that
Just take him home and feed him all his favourite things, but CHILLED
((((((Kuro))))))
((((( positive vibes )))))) come on Kuro. Muchelle, positive vibes around Kuro, you can do it xxx
(((((Kuro))))
Please get better!!!
Fever seems gone BUT he didn’t eat this morning FFFFSHJSFDKJF
At least vet convened that tonight or at most tomorrow morning the rat has to be home.
@bam: luckily vet told me not to fiddle with K’s little anus, but in case I had to bf wouldn’t be psyched, since he used to have 2 buns his family adopted already with health issues (one e.c. survivor and the other dental, if I don’t recall wrongly). Sadly we live 30kms apart and he works all day, so…
Michelle, that sounds like a very good choice of boyfriend!
I’m glad the fever is down. Maybe he’ll regain his appetite now when he gets to get home to his proper mum and familiar environment.
Poor thing, I’m glad his fever has gone down. I bet he’ll perk up when he’s back home! ![]()
Fever down: good. Skipped meal: see what you can bribe him with at home. ![]()
K’s home. When I saw him at the hospital he was in terrible state, too stressed up, so I signed papers to pull him out of that hell hole.
Overall he’d be in decent health if not for the accumulated gas (from stomach distension + pain) in his intestine, that might kill him at any time since we can’t know how much is in there. He’s going to have his usual set of plasil+debridat shots and metronidazole.
As soon as he was home he perked up and checked his pen, drank and now he’s slumped in his cage. I’ll let him be for an hour or so, hoping he’ll eat something. Stuff isn’t looking too good right now, but we’re trying.

I hope he does better now that he’s home with you ((((Kuro))))
Can you give him gentle bum lifts to help with the gas ?
((( Kuro – continued vibes )))
I’m glad he’s home. It must feel so much better for him to be in his own safe and familiar place. Please tell him we’re all rooting for him. (((((Kuro)))))
He rests with his forehead almost on the ground and has heavy balance problems… could it be from the IV port he still has in the ear?
((((Kuro)))) I’m glad he’s home with you, and hope he improves soon.
Oh, sweet darling boy.
I was under the impression that his medical woes were always looked after by a really good team of people – did you have to take him somewhere new and nasty?
I’m with Vienna: please try to gently lift his bum up as high as you safely can, hold for a few counts, then down. Then repeat. It help work gas bubbles up and out of their intestines. Gentle massage along his sides (since his tum is stitched up) will also help between lifts.
(((((((((Kuro)))))))))
@Q8: don’t get me wrong, the clinic is super clean and the team is the usual team that already looked after him. But maybe because it’s spring or idk what, the exotic animals ICU was FULL of patients + they had a lot of dog emergencies, so there was always staff running by, talking and, of course, the animals’ noise.
K’s fur was all ruffled and dull… as soon as he got home, 10 mins later, he already had his shiny coat. The IV was left in his ear in case I have to rush him back, so they don’t have to sedate him to access the vein, but I hope they tell me I can slip it off today.
About the butt-lift… I’ll try. He’s beaten but still feisty, even giving him CC is moderate hell. I did however massage very lightly his sides and it helped pass out some gas. We’re at 6.50 in the morning, I’ve slept a grand total of 3 hours and he still isn’t eating by himself, but he’s alive. So I guess so far so good…
The butt lift can be very effective. Fighting CC is a huge lot less worrying than just accepting CC. So that’s a good sign even if it’s inconvenient for the human.
Keeping my fingers crossed for him today as well. (((((Kuro)))))
(((( morning vibes for Kuro ))))
{{{Kuro}}} !
So glad he is home and you had seen some improvement in his activity levels.
He rests with his forehead almost on the ground and has heavy balance problems… could it be from the IV port he still has in the ear?
His head twisted around and forehead down similar to this?

Or just lowering his head, nose to ground?
Did the hospital tell you the signs he displayed when he had a temp spike? Was he running a temp before the surgery at all?
No, just head low to the ground. He’s been checked for e.c. several times. He had temperature problems after the surgeries, but the symptoms were not like this, he actually started doing this when the fever was already gone. Vet suggested it might be general tiredness/exhaustion due to the anesthesia and the stress. To be honest, K is moving a little bit better than last night… a tiny bit better. He went to pee in his litter, too.
Yikes, no wonder you’re so worried, poor little Kuro! I hope he’ll continue to improve, sending him all our vibes!
Still sending him huge love from Kuwait
((((((Kuro))))))
He had temperature problems after the surgeries, but the symptoms were not like this, he actually started doing this when the fever was already gone.
Did he have fever after other surgeries also?
Not that I know of, but this time he had 2 procedures that were like 4 hours apart, so his body has been extra stressed
Oh, i didn’t realise that! Poor Kuro.. And you must have been stressed to the max.
He’s a fighter!
One question! (I’ve called the vet and he’ll call me back asap cause he’s in the er…so in the meanwhile I’ll ask you guys)
K’s trying to eat and I see he’s pooped a poop and a string of greyish mucus (kinda firm and slimy, like uhm… damn i don’t know). Can it be a sign stuff’s moving inside him again?
If stuff is coming out, I’d say yes!
Was he eating a bit more after doing that?
Vet just called me back! He said it’s very positive because it means he’s starting to push out the stuff that’s been stuck inside. Again, I’m overemotional these days but I got goosebumps when he told me things are starting to look positive! He confirmed tomorrow we take out the IV from his ear if nothing bad happens!!
Kuro’s trying to eat with all his might, but he’s still very tired and groggy… he ate a tiny bit of carrot and a bit of carrot tops + he gobbled down an astounding 6ml of CC!
This sounds good.
C’mon little Kuro!
Muchelle, you’re allowed to be emotional!
YAAAAAAAAAHHHH!
Very good sign. And I mean, VERY good ![]()
Poor Kuro he’s probably starving but great hes trying to eat. I’d say little and often to keep everything moving…
can you grate the carrot for him. it might need less energy to chew….
Come on Kuro a nice supper. Long night sleep and strong in the morning…(((((Kuro!!))))
So, night-time update: we got more mucus & poop going (quite a long string this time), we got litter usage to go pee, he’s still groggy but can move a bit better and his coat is looking shiny. He still naps a lot and doesn’t have much energy to eat, but on last CC feeding I could get him to eat almost 8 ml and he washed himself afterwards. Starting to feel optimistic here. Tonight I’ll sleep 4 full hours and see how he fares without one dose of CC… then in the morning vet call and hopefully we’ll free his bandaged ear.
(Also, really a big thank you to everyone for bearing with me during these weird days T___T <3 )
Hurrah for poops! Keep going Kuro!
Ku-ro! Ku-ro! Ku-ro! ![]()
4 hours of sleep later… he pooped without mucus, took his CC & meds like a boss, peed and… he’s eating! very slowly and little by little but he’s eating. Currently chewing on a chicory leaf~
Vet was enthusiastic, in a few hours we take the IV out and check the surgical wound <3
I’m so proud of my little snookums.
((((((Kuro))))))
Chanting and clapping and supporting ” KURO! KURO! KURO!
You can do it little man!!!
Just seen Q8 kuro’ing too !!!! Lol
(you can’t have too many !!!)
xxxx
Kuro! Kuro! Kuro!
You go, Kuuuurooooo!
Just seen Q8 kuro’ing too !!!! Lol
(you can’t have too many !!!)
xxxx
IV needle is out, surgical wound is looking fine and we’ve been switched to a less aggressive antibiotic. I still have to call the vet every morning for an update at least until friday, but he was very positive about the destiny of “miracle boy”.
Right now K’s very pissed and still a bit stressed from the trip, but he keeps pushing out poop… so yeah, maybe tonight I’ll sleep ![]()
“Pissed and pooping” is good !!! We loooove P&P.
He is probably just still quite uncomfortable and hungry…. in a few days he’ll be binkying off the walls like Spiderbun!!
He did a Spiderbun number at the vet’s… I asked him to check why K keeps sitting weirdly, so he grabbed him and put him on the floor to see how he moved. The moment he was free, K literally sprinted and squished himself between wall and furniture, finding an (almost) unreachable spot.
Vet didn’t lose his cool and said: “Rat seems fine, lol.”
If he has got that energy in him to fight and hide, then that’s a good sign too !! ![]()
I agree with Vienna. Pissed and pooping, fighting and running away -there’s a good bun ![]()
Right now I’m only sad that he’s super scared of me (if I touch him, 80% chances I’m picking him up to stab him with a needle & force feed). I’ve just finished doing my thing and he’s been doing this little noise with his voice that’s just heartbreaking. I wish he could understand that the sooner he eats, the earlier I’ll just grab him just to scratch his back
Poor pooper… he’ll forget all about it once he’s all better and bossing you around again
((((((Kuro))))))
he’s so weak… idk guys, I hope it’s just him being stressed ._.
Just prevent him from spiderbunning. Give him plenty of unmedicated strokes& kisses. Keep him calm and let him rest and keep his food and liquids up. He will get his strength back. Hes been through a lot.
One day at a time.
(((( kuro ))))
Gently goad him into doing all the things a bun must do: eat, drink, poop.
Massage him, love him with your hands and with your voice, and give him time – he’s a fighter even if he’s not his feisty self at the moment.
We’re all cheering him on from our corners of the world.
(((((((((Kuro)))))))))
His recovery may be a lot slower than you’d hoped, but I’m happy to hear that it’s slowly going the right way. All the handling will probably be forgiven soon. Stay strong Kuro!
Maybe I know why yesterday he was so under the weather, while cleaning the cage I found a (sorry for the mental imagery) huge cow-like pool of semisolid poop. He probably managed to push it out and was sore. Now he’s a tiny bit more lively and not in pain like yesterday, tonight he even ate two treats and one leaf of salad, his posture improved too…
It still bothers me the grunf grunf sound (sorta like a piggy?) that he makes when I have to grab him
Poor little bloke…
The sound might be a mix of pain and frustration at being so helpless against your ministrations
Either way, so glad he’s still moving in the right direction. ((((((KURO))))))
That sound is all too familiar. It’s the sound of: I’m a bunny with an opinion, and my opinion is that I don’t like this. It’s such a cute sound though, even if it means that your bun is disgruntled.
It’s positive that he’s communicating, and that he’s eating better.
So, new problem, maybe. Vet said to call back tomorrow so we dont know if I’m being psychotic or if I’ve got a right to worry. I’ll explain: on the ear he had the IV for longer he has 3 wounds, one from the needle and 2 are kinda like burns from the tape. All those spots are dark, both on the outside and the inside of the ear and he keeps the tip of the ear bent in a weird way. Vet said to keep watch and see tomorrow morning how it is and to put Hypermix on it.
My question is: does anyone know how does necrosis looks in rabbits? does it have a particular smell? These “crusts” and spots are blackish and soft-ish, the ear is warm. I’ve seen human necrosis and damn, it reeks and it’s disgusting. When K had a small necrosis in his belly from when he bit himself after the first dental procedure it was a leathery hard button of crust-like material and he didn’t feel pain, right now he’s in pain hell if I only brush my finger on the spots.
I’m rambling at this point, I’ll stop writing <_<
edit: as for good news, his coat has gone back to super shiny and his eyes are bright. He tries to eat, poops out a lot of ugly balls and pees like no tomorrow. He’s still grunf-grunfing at me, I started to grunf back…
Lol. Grunf back… lol !!!
I honestly don’t know, Muchelle. But I suspect necrotic tissue stinks in all beings, so it might just be scabbed/raw skin – do keep in mind that bun ears are highly vascularized and Kuro may have developed subdermal hemotomas (intense bruises)
I’ve done some research and the answer might be coming from a post I’ve found on this forum. I think it might be a dry gangrene reaction to the IV needle, so he’s probably “shedding” the top of the ear. Needless to say, this afternoon we’ll be at the vet’s.
![]()
Vet confirmed I’m not paranoid, it is a necrosis. Poor K is going to have a pirate look in a few days, at least the procedure won’t be hurtful. The reason for him being groggy might be a little infection at the base of the bad ear, which we’ll treat aggressively starting from tonight at 7. If we can beat this, he’ll be good to go.
We’re ready for battle, ahoy!
Oh no! Well it’s good you followed your instincts and caught it early. I’m curious as to what the “procedure” entails? ((((Kuro))))
Yikes, glad you saw it and reacted quickly!
@Luna: the procedure basically is to give him a local anesthetic, cut off the dead tissue (won’t feel pain from that), clean the cut and apply antiseptic. Vet told me it’s not traumatic for the bun, but we’ll have to wait a few days for Kuro to be stronger. Other option would be to let K’s body handle it and let it fall off, but vet is against it because it could stress him more than just having it removed, so…
Poor wee pumpkin
Last hurdle, then, hopefully ((((((Kuro))))))
Oh ok. Kuro’s been a tough bun through all this so I’m sure he will handle it well
.
First of all, again thank you all for your support <3
The base of the ear is getting less inflamed (almost normal pink this morning) and K seems to be a tad perkier and more mobile. On our update phone call vet said it’s wonderful news and that he’ll visit him monday morning so that we don’t stress him too much this weekend. Do I dare to hope we’re pulling through?
Sounds like great developments to me
((((((KUUUROOO))))))
Well spotted Muchelle !!!!! ![]()
Today I met K’s nurse from the hospital at the mall. She was so sad to hear about his soon-to-be pirate ear, since she took super good care of him (and the other buns, she’s a bunny owner herself). I wonder if I could be as compassionate as her after going through vet school
being a paramedic already desensitized (spelling??) me enough.
Random thoughts, sorry. As for K, he’s trying to eat more often and he tries to walk (even with poor results). The ear is definitely of a more normal pink… I wish tomorrow goes by without problems and I wish on monday we’ll hear good news from the doc.
At least his body is persistently pushing towards health
((((((Captain Kuro))))))
Ermmmmm I’m a bit confused about a “pirate ear”… i know what a pirate eye is and even a long john silver leg… but is he going to have a big hooped earring in his ear….?? ![]()
Is a pirate ear an ear that is no more?
![]()
Ahhhh you’ll have to call him Kuro Van Gogh, or Evander Kuro Holyfield…
He’ll join Henry in the “not got a complete ear” team
Will that effect his ability to regulate temperature
seeing as bunnies do it through their ears….?
Maybe they adapt very quickly…. ?
I actually didn’t ask about temperature… it’s a procedure we can’t avoid, so it didn’t even cross my mind. I’ve read on the mighty internet that in the wild it’s not rare for a bun to go through the Van Gogh process. Tomorrow I’ll ask, thanks for the input!
Soo… today we had the pre-op visit with the anesthesiologist. If all goes well, wednesday will be the day. Right now he has some temperature, so we need to keep that in check to avoid unnecessary risks. Fingers crossed!
Paws double crossed!![]()
Paws crossed here as well!
It’s not so uncommon for buns to lose part of an ear, f ex after a fight with another bun. He will still be beautiful.
We’ll just call him Captain K… ![]()
A handsome rogue of a pirate bun…
Just back from pre-op visit with surgeon & his vet. Stitches were taken out, his belly is healing just fine. He poops, eats, drinks and hates me more than ever. Won’t be going through ear surgery yet cause his body blocked off the necrotic zone with a nice chord of scar tissue, so we’ll give it a week or so and then either laser it off or wait for it to fall on its own. He’ll still be needing antibiotic and metacam and vet gave him some ferments to help his poop get back to normal but most importantly…
WE’VE BEEN DEEMED HEALTHY!!!!

I’m crying happy tears right now. Best news I’ve had all week.
Rub my brave boy’s nose please. ((((((KUUUROOO))))))
With the stitches out he already performed in a couple of jumps T_T literally crying here too
Yay! Congratulations!
Sweet little Kuro
He’s pretty amazing.
After a wave of optimism yesterday, I’m left with a few doubts. He’s pooping more (loves the taste of the active ferments) and he seems to be starting to accept hay again. Problem is, he’s not trying to walk. He sits here, moves to sit there and is still wobbly, which still can be explained by exhaustion/stress and the ear healing up. Although, I’m worried cause he’s keeping one hind leg bent outwards and I’m afraid he might damage himself if he doesn’t move. Am I being paranoid again?
Could it be discomfort from having the stitches removed?
I don’t think so, now that stitches came out he’s “more” active (yesterday jumped in the cage and in/out of litterbox). He has a small rash on the hind leg he keeps crooked , probably from when he had blood drawn but it seems something too little to justify him not properly using that leg. I’m thinking maybe I made a mistake padding his cage with soft material (as in it didn’t help him regain balance while the ears cleared up), but again I had to do it because of the pododermatitis, to avoid breaks in his pads…
Not sure what to think or suggest ![]()
If he’s really wobbly there are meds against vertigo and/or nausea (meclizine).
I think I would be wobbly too if I’ve been through what he’s been through!!! Another couple of days of r&r and food for strength.
((( Kuro )))
Thanks bam, I’ll ask about it to the vet! Today the ear is normally pink and also the scruff of his neck (it was inflamed too). I wonder if he still has a bit of an inflamation in his inner ear and that, combined from the exhaustion and the reduced mobility of the bad ear is giving him trouble.
Except for this, he’s gladly munching on his first piece of celery since last week ![]()
Hey, you know, one baby step at a time – and we all know that eating and pooping are THE priorities in little buns’ lives….
Kuro is doing so great at the moment and now eating celery (yay!) and so, one stage at a time….
eating well is a sign that other things are OK too…. so go with that for a few days – just so long as eating doesn’t slow down, give him all he can chomp at !! ![]()
He just walked ;_; I’m literally crying. (cue to play the scene where the paraplegic kid starts walking from “the secret garden”)
Awww, just this time we’ll forgive you for making your mum cry Kuro…
Great news, keep on getting better!
Good on you, Captain K.
Just keep getting stronger and better, little one ((((((Kuro))))))
{{{Kuro}}} Keep it up, little bun!
Today is exacty two weeks since his emergency surgery. He resumed eating hay and hard pellets, eats all day, does his (bad) pooping and is generally more active.
Earlier I went to clean his cage and he even flicked me off
His little beotchy self is def back!
Back from checkup. The little idiot took the ear off almost completely by himself, so the vet simply plucked the piece off and gave him a couple stitches + desenfectant. Right now he has quite the dramatic look (no pics yet, we got underaged people here xD), he doesn’t seem to care though. I think he was very bothered by the dried up piece of ear…
So now I’m on close watch to make sure he doesn’t even think about scratching off the stitches, luckily vet assured me the cut will heal superfast (stitches removal is on tuesday to avoid further stress). First thing he did once back home was to stuff his face ![]()
He was probably trying to keep the vet bill down so he did most of the work himself.
I’m glad it’s behind him, and that he doesn’t seem bothered by it. Yay for a hungry bunny! ![]()
That’s good the bad pieces are off now. Hopefully he’s more comfortable now.
Happy nomnoms, Captain! ![]()
He’s a bit sleepy now cause I caved in and gave him half dose of painkiller (and I know it’s normal for him to be sleepy right now, but it kicked up my anxiety even more lol), but I gotta say he’s moving just fine now. Probably the dried piece of ear was keeping the canal closed and he had problems orienting.
Now if he only remembered how to use his litterbox, I’d be the happiest camper (will order plenty of presents for his b-day anyways)
Yayyyyy. ![]()
Ear’s all healed up
tomorrow we take off the stitches. As for K, he’s eating like no tomorrow, pooping and peeing (everywhere, sigh). Still not back to his humping routine, maybe the internal stitches still bother him a bit, but he walks perfectly now and his character is back
He still looks like a lord of darkness even after all he’s been through. We humans still need to get used to his new looks, we’ll get there eventually…

Don’t worry, I still think he looks snuggleable
.
Poor little lord… it’s great to hear he’s more like his former self, but after all the skin he’s showing off, maybe the hoovering of food is so he can grow some fur (or… egad! an ear) back
Nose rubs from us. ![]()
Ohhhh bless his little cotton socks !!!!!! And that all fell off on its own??!!
Nose rub from us lot here xx
Nose rubs from us here as well! His ear is a battlefield scar. It’s so great that his appetite is good!
N’awww I love his little white socks! And it’s great news that he’s so active again
@Vienna: yes! we managed to salvage the little stump on the far left by massaging him (probably helped blood going up there again) and his body produced a cord of thick skin all around the damaged tissue. Once that was set, the ear was ready to go and he had all the intentions of finishing the job by himself!
I don’t remember who asked me about thermoregulation, maybe Bam? Anyways, I asked and the vet said that it would be a problem if he was an outside bun, but since he’s housed inside he’ll just need a little extra attention during our torrid summers. So basically the answer is that losing one ear might be a problem if there’s no A/C. Luckily, Italy’s a no can do unless you have a good air cooling device installed in as many rooms as possible
Hehe he also has a gorgeous little white bow-tie, but right now it’s still dirty from the CC feeding XD I’ll ask if there’s a free nurse to give him a dry wash…
Twas I, Muchelle…
Also I’ve noticed that my two don’t have warm/cool ears at the same time…. so I’ve no ide how one knows when a bunny ‘should’ be hot, or not….
but thats maybe a subject for a new thread.
And you’ll be able to tell by his other ear…. ![]()
Oh oops sorry
I did even check the previous posts but I couldn’t find that one ahahah
As for bunny ears, I’ve found out that the best way to know how they’re feeling is to check the ears AND the back of the head. For high temperature (either fever or external heat derived) I’ll always have hot ears and hot head, so that’s a pretty good check for me.
We’re going to take out the stitches in a few hours
I think I’ll ask the vet about the peeing, I wouldn’t want him to have a light UTI from all the peeing himself that happened, cause he’s starting to use his litter again, but he leaks around :/ At least his pee rash is gone. I’m thinking about booking him a trip to Lourdes =_=
Well, the pilgrimage you guys took last summer (was your dad there too??) was pretty awesome judging by what Kuro said ![]()
XD hehe normal vacation only involves the 15th of August Madonna, so maybe he needs a stronger blessing…
We’re back from the checkup and stitches will come out next tuesday cause one spot still needs a bit of time. Otherwise everything looks good
He’s got one bad pododermatitis spot on one heel, but we’ll wait it out and see if it gets better with the oil massages. I dared to book a short holiday for May 1st, hope he doesn’t come up with other reasons for me to stay holed up at home XD
Yesterday (15 Apr) we made it to K’s third b-day. Up to a week ago it looked impossible to celebrate his birthday, but here we are!
I’d like to wish a good Easter to whoever is celebrating it and again thank everyone for sticking with me all through this mess, it meant a lot <3

Can’t help it. The little lord used his dark ways of cuteness and stole our hearts.
I’m glad he’s here to celebrate too.
Hoppy belated birthday. And many more carrot-top filled years. ![]()
Awwwwww bless him…. if he has slight head tilt to the right DONT PANIC, he’s prob just compensating for the unequal weight on his little head ![]()
Aww, the little pirate-eared Lord Kuro! He looks so comfy on your arm!
Yay, he looks quite happy and healthy already!
Happy belated birthday Kuro! ![]()
Back from the vet! The stitches are out, then we did bloodwork to check on e.c. (that was scheduled for march… but we know how march went).
He’s at 1,550 kg, so he lost a good 400gr since when he was discharged from the hospital, no wonder he’s eating like a pig. Only thing to solve now is one heel where he has this bad pododermatitis, I suggested to give him a padded sock, but vet said that knowing him, he’d be chewing it off in no time… so we’re on a bit of metacam for the next week and Hypermix massages. Gonna be fun to try to hold him still now that he’s fully back to satan’s wrath mode
About the fur problem (vet assured me they only found fur in his stomach, no paper or other stuff), he just told me to brush him intensively with the usual angora rabbit comb and the newly acquired FURminator, then said “or we can get him naked like a sphynx cat.” (I was like “damn I love sphinx cats, let’s do it”)
I’m still somewhat anxious about this whole fur matter but I guess we just gotta truck on!
I’ve seen a post from Q8 re furminator – can’t remember what exactly but be veeery careful (I know you would be) ![]()
Yes it’s a tool that’s too powerful! But in combination with the standard comb (ehh can’t find the translation to english, but I have that rectangular thingie with metal rods that’s used to shed angora wool… cardatore in italian =.= ) it’s very useful: I remove/lift the dead hair with the comb and then lightly use the furminator to take it all out quickly before it disperses in the air. Vet thinks this rat probably has something to do with wool rabbits cause he has the thickest coat & undercoat =____=
Belated Birthday Wishes to Kuro!! Hugs and Kisses being sent across for the little Champion.
Carding brush ![]()
it was that simple y_y I checked my usual online dictionary but it was too stupid to suggest me that verb.
Right now the Little Lord is taking a stroll. Fur is starting to grow on his head’s bald patch and it looks like he has an old tattoo fading out ahahah
Instead of opening another (useless) thread, I guessed I could keep ranting on this one…
Rat is overall fine, except his heels that are still closing up. I guess I wasn’t good enough to keep track of when I had to change his position when he couldn’t move, so he’s been recovering from two bad pressure ulcers. They’re closed up right now and the fluff is regrowing, but he still isn’t jumping and moves kinda carefully.
Vet refused to bandage him because of the fight he’d have put up against the ‘socks’, so he’s getting two massages a day with his neem ointment. I bought him two new hay beds and he keeps peeing in both (and I keep cleaning…). During his long litter re-training, K made this association that hay = litter, so apparently he’s preferring to lay in wet hay than to make two hops to his litter. And since wet and wounds don’t mix…
He seriously hates me at this point in time, or he’s afraid of me, since he growls sometimes. Also the fact that he still doesn’t feel like having some quality time with his sex dolls is probably contributing to the peeing and the grunfing.
Idk what is this post about, it’s been a month and I’m tired & frustrated. On top of that me and bf will leave for 48 hours to do that weekend of holiday we couldn’t do a month ago and the thought of leaving makes me crazy. K’s gonna be home with my parents that know how to feed/clean/brush him, but won’t be giving him massages. I so so so so hope his heels don’t get worse. Blah
/end of rant
Can you put a thin layer of hay on top of his litter and then gradually shift his hay to a hay rack?
I sense your frustration but you’ve always done your best with his darkness Lord K.
Try to enjoy yourself this weekend.
Yes, that’s how I’ve been doing… the wood pellets were too hard on his feet so he had a lot of hay in the litter and now I’ve been gradually removing hay. I bought a really cool hay rack that can be hanged or laid on the ground to store in an un-peeable fashion his hay stack.
I even had to remove the absorbant sheet from his cage cause he’s into his digging/chewing mode, so it’s a continuous see pee-wash pee-dry the bed-put the bed back in – wait for pee – repeat. Last night I’ve soaked the bottom of the bed in vinegar and right now I don’t see any pee… let’s see if that works.
Probably what bothers me the most is that he’s never ‘hated’ me so much before, he even refuses to come sleep by me as he usually did (he still licks me and accepts pets, but he wants it either in his pen or far from ‘my’ spot). I know it’s temporary and I know he’ll get back to humping stuff but I wonder how long will it take. Wouldn’t want to have his balls go cause he becomes a literal demon after not venting his hormones for so long.
Well, keep in mind that licking is a sign of affection, but you did torture him recently so he’s got to see his grudge through til the end.
Even my little guy gives me bunny butt after nail clippings and scoop-and-hugs etc. And he adores me!
Maybe it’s for the best that I’m checking out for a couple of days. After he’ll be by himself for a while maybe he’ll remember that I still don’t want to eat him ![]()
Absence makes the heart grow fonder
. I’m sure he’ll ‘forgive’ you eventually. If he truly is a dark lord as Q8 says, maybe put on some metal music or something to brighten his mood? ![]()
ahah he loves Rammstein XD
Anyways, after not seeing me for almost 3 days he’s much more chilled… he resumed sleeping under my table and he even ‘played’ with his sex dolls while I was gone. He pushed out a lot of fur too! The little ear is all covered up, now he’s finishing up the rest of the head and scruff ![]()
That’s good that he’s settling back into his old ways and um…”activities”
.
*giggle* well, that’s one way to check if a guy is healthy… ![]()
Good to know he’s getting some ![]()
So here is the Little Lord, munching on his fave chicory (that sadly he can have only once every one or two months). As you can see he’s still having his bad hair month
He’s also constantly HUNGRY and sleeps/rests a lot, I guess he needs the extra calories to push out all of the new fur… His heels’ fur is completely back too and he’s super careful not to weight too much on the bad heel
hopefully we’ll see some jumping soon

Kiss his little cheek for me. ![]()
I did, he clacked his teeth at me ahahahaha
![]()
Sooo… I guess this will be the final (hopefully) update on K’s furball issues!
We’re just back from the vet, he gained back almost 300gr (vet was like “holy hell how much does this rat weight? you wanna eat him anytime soon?”), his internal stitching is fine and he’s got 90% of his fur back
He also did a good job keeping his feet nail short, so he only received a bit of a trim to his front paws. Pododermatitis seems to be gone & he got his heel fluff back. The little ear is fine, the cicatrization is all nice and even, except one spot where he had the infection that is a bit thicker, but still healthy tissue.
Behavioural-wise, K’s back to his ways maybe with a tad more appreciation for the good life, since he’s flopping 4-5 times a day and he never ever did that before
Again many many many many thanks to everyone for sticking to us through these past two months <3 Don't have enough words to thank you properly <3

Tell the ballerino felicitations and love from us ![]()
Yay, that’s great news! Keep it up ![]()
I sure hope he keeps it up! No more drama, Little Lord!
Also my hands are itching to open a thread for people to post their best ballerina buns…
That’s really great news of course !! it’s obvious why he is flopping much more… one ear is heavier than the other !!!
So he tips over and over and over and then can’t control himself and has to nonchalantly turn it into a cool flop !!! ![]()
Fantastic update! He is amazing. ![]()
