Lights on or off?

I’ve been coming home from work as of late, and so the lights on my house are off 90% of the time. Since it’s winter, it’s also starting to get pitch black around 6 pm. Should I start leaving at least my bedroom lights on for the buns and guinea pig until I come home around midnight, ready to sleep? Or do you think they’re fine with the lights off?

Rabbits in the wild are most active during dawn and dusk, so they can see well in the dark. However, my Meketaten is getting older and has some eye issues where I don’t feel comfortable leaving her in pitch black, so I have a nightlight in her room so there’s at least some shadows to stop her from running into things.

If you don’t want to leave them in the dark, but don’t want to rack up the energy bill, I’d suggest a nightlight!

They don’t necessarily “need” the light on, but my boys like it on in the evening.

I keep the light on for my boys in the evening and then when I got to bed, I shut it off and keep the hall light on which kind of works like a night light for them.

I usually leave a light on for Olaf when I’m going to be away when it gets dark. He seems startled when I come home in the dark and turn a light on so it has made the winter transition easier. As for nighttime, I usually give him a carrot before bed so he’s distracted nomming when I turn the light out and go to bed. There is some ambient light from an adjacent property so it never gets completely pitch black at night.

I put the light on as soon as it starts getting dull but everything bar the landing light gets turned off at bedtime. The landing light stops it being pitch black and it offers enough light to allow me to peek downstairs and check on them.

Rookie doesn’t like the dark either. It’s a bunny thing…

I hadn’t even thought of a nightlight! Funny it’s mentioned, I actually have two spares in my closet I totally forgot about. Thanks everyone!

Not sure about the guinea pigs… But I’ve been wondering about this too about buns. I usually keep the light in Dorothy’s room off during the day, but a dim light shines from the hallway. She also has a cardboard box in her pen that she hides under (the flaps) when she’s napping. I think she does that when she wants total darkness, but that’s a complete guess. She may just like that because it makes her feel safe like she’s in a den or something. When she’s out for playtime, lights are always on. This seems to satisfy her.
