Hello everyone, i’m new here so please forgive me if i did not post this correctly, but i have a question that i haven’t been able to find answers to. I have a 3 month old bunny and 2 days ago i noticed her poop was quite watery, so i switched her over to hay only until she feels better. After about a day of this her poop returned back to normal however she did not. She is eating and pooping normally but she is acting very lethargic and unlike her normal self. she doesn’t explore the room or do binkies like she used to, all she does is sit in the “loaf” position all day, she doesn’t even assume the more streched out relaxed pose. She does stand up and become alert when she hears food though. Is it possible that she is still feeling a bit off because of the tummy issues (it’s been 2 days of this now) or could this be a sign of something more serious? Thanks for the answers and help

Welcome to BB. I’m sorry to hear you need to post about such a worrying situation.

Since it’s been two days, I highly recommend seeing a rabbit vet for a professional opinion.

On BB’s end, getting exact details on what you feed your rabbit could help members pinpoint the potential cause of the distress.

1) What do you give her to eat?
2) How much does she receive?
3) How long has she been receiving each individual food (i.e. how long on this hay, pellet, veggie, etc…)?
4) How long have you had her?

The priority is that she eats. Make sure she eats and is passing poops. If she does not for 12hrs or more, take her to an emergency vet immediately.

To try and alleviate her discomfort, purchasing some simethicone (infant gas drops) at the store and giving her some to take may help. It’s for dealing with minor gas, but this seems to be a pretty big episode. However, it’s worth a try until you can get her to the vet. She may need motility drugs.

Tummy troubles are something that should always be checked out by a vet, as bunnies can rapidly get worse. If she’s having watery poop, that is a definite vet visit. What are you feeding her besides hay and pellets?

I agree, a lethargic bunny needs to see a vet (and especially in the case of young bunnies). Bunnies are very good at hiding their pain, but sitting in a hunched up loaf position is a good indication of pain.

It’s great that you’ve noticed something’s not right, but I would get her to a vet as soon as possible. Has she been to the vet before? Do you have a good exotic vet you could take her too?

In my opinion, if something is off then it’s always worth taking them to the vet.

Currently she is eating 3 types of hay (Supreme petfoods selective timothy hay, Rasco small animals premium hay and Rasco small animals premium narture- i’m not sure how familiar you are with these products, but the last one has added carrot  and purple coneflower, so i try to give it more sparingly and am unsure if i should even be giving it now when she is recovering from tummy issues….it is her absolute favorite out of all of them though.). Normally she would eat the hays that i just mentioned and about half a cup of pellets (Supreme Science Selective jr) and sometimes carrots (about 2 thin slices a day). I plan to introduce more vegetables as she gets older and of course decrease the pellets. She recieves hay in unlimited quantities (when her hayrack is empty i refill in right away- except for the last hay that has added carrots i give her about 2 fistfulls a day. Everything that i mentioned I’ve been giving her from day 1, and i’ve had her for about a moth now. Also i should mention- the day she had watery poop i gave her a small piece of bell pepper to try – could it be a reaction to that?

She is eating a lot and also pooping normally. We’ve just been to the vet last week because she was limping (when it comes to jumping and climbing she is very brave but clumsy, which as you might guess is not the best combination) but it turned down to be nothing. So i am a bit reluctant to be dragging her to the vet again but it seems that i’ll have to do it. Thank you for the advice i will call the vet today.

Currently i’m feeding her only hay. Otherwise she would also get 2 thin slices of carrots and her pellets. The day she got watery poop i gave her a little bit of bell pepper to try and i think the watery poop could be a reaction to the pepper not agreeing with her? Her eating habits have been normal and her poop also went back to normal pretty quickly…but i will call the vet today.

Yes she has been to the vet before, in fact we’ve been just last week (and yes it is an exotic vet) I don’t wanna stress her too much by constantly driving her to the vet but if this really is so serious i will take her again.

UPDATE

I called the vet and he said that we can’t come in until friday but that she should be fine as long as she is eating and pooping normally. He also said that we will have to check for internal parasites.
