Here’s the thing – we have no idea how old Kylie is.  We got her and Keelie 3 1/2 years ago from the shelter, they were part of a big group of bunnies that had been rescued from a hoarder.  All we know is that they were adults when we adopted them.

I was cleaning their cage yesterday and Kylie was in the way (which she often is, she’s a stubborn bunny) so I went to move her.  Usually I just have to touch her and she storms off in a huff.  Yesterday I was able to just pick her up.  That was my first clue.  Her underside was wet, and filthy.  Now she’s never been very good about grooming, but this was way beyond that.  So I scooped her up and put her in the bathroom sink (where she thumped once, but didn’t try to get out) and I washed her.  And she let me.  And then I towel dried her and blow dried her a bit, and she let me.  She did struggle a bit, but not much.  And honestly as I was doing this I thought okay she’s got to pretty much be driving up to the bridge right now because she HATES being held.  She feels to me like she’s lost weight, and I can feel her spine.

When I put her back I noticed the water dish was completely empty.  They have a dish and a bottle.  So I filled the dish, and she drank some water.  So even though it wasn’t their dinner time I gave them some pellets, and she ate some.  I put a towel in the cage (because she was still a little damp) and she’d spend time going between the towel and the food & water.

By last night she was looking a little perkier, but still definitely not back to normal.  And her pearl-grey nose is all brown now because she’s been dipping it right into the water and then eating pellets.  She got some pellets at their regular dinner time, and we gave them more going to bed.  Her appetite is quite good.  She’s drinking water.  She’s taking treats.  She’s pooping.  She’s moving about, although not as much as normal.  She doesn’t seem to be in any pain, but she doesn’t look “happy”.  Mind you she’s always been a really grumpy bunny.   Frankly she’s starting to look like my mother’s very senior cat.

We haven’t taken her in to the vet yet because a) we don’t have an emergency vet here that will take bunnies apparently and b) we’re not actually sure that she’s SICK, and not just old.   Her symptoms are she’s lost some weight, she’s not quite as active, her grooming is atrocious.  Oh and she’s letting Carbun stay close to her instead of chasing him away.  Right now they’re sleeping next to each other, which is quite unusual for her.  So we have no real concrete symptoms to take her to the vet for, they’re going to have to just run a battery of tests to figure out if there’s anything wrong or if she’s just naturally nearing “that time”.

Any thoughts/advice?  For those who have had senior bunnies that passed, how did you know when their symptoms were age vs illness?  If she had other symptoms – if she wasn’t pooping well (she definitely is) or wasn’t eating or drinking well then there would be no question, we’d have her in to the vet ASAP.

I’m glad to read she’s eating and drinking at least. A trip to your regular vet when able is prob best. A couple things came to mind when reading your post. 1) arthritis – could attribute to her not posturing right when peeing so soiling herself, or not getting up to go pee. Also maybe painful for her to groom herself. 2) Urinary tract or bladder issues. Possible renal issues, weight loss and drinking more then the norm are some symptoms 3) teeth, also could cause weight loss and poor grooming. Being in a trio it’s not always easy to check they’re eating equal portions too.

Could be combo of these things also.

I wonder if going to your vet for an antibiotic  and an anti-inflammatory might be worthwhile? Baytril seems to be the stock standard thing they hand out for rabbits but it is actually suppose to be really good for U/infections.  A member here saw some improvement with a similar issue when her rabbit got anti-inflammatories. I’m don’t know much about long term use of these but if you did see an improvement while she was on them you would at least get an idea of what is going on.

I agree with Jersey. I would wait and get her into your regular vet for a checkup. My rabbit Mango was diagnosed with arthritis at 4 years old – he’s 9 now and his arthritis is much worse than when he was younger but he did start have motility problems at age 4 years old.

Also dental – the older a rabbit gets the more likely they may start getting molar spurs due to bone loss and their teeth may move slightly causing slight maloclussion.

Of course there is always the UTI issue.

            Please keep us updated.

I can tell you that even if a rabbit is eating doesn’t necessarily mean they feel good – they may have mild discomfort but continue to eat.

            Vibes for Kylie.

I have an appt for her with one of the regular vets in about an hour. They’re really backed up today but will squeeze us in, I think we’ll ask about getting the antibiotic and anti-inflamatory and try her on those for a week or two, and then if there’s an improvement see about taking her off the anti-inflamatory to see if there’s any change. If not then it was an infection of some sort, if she gets worse again then put her back on the anti-inflamatory.

Her grooming has ALWAYS been awful, just not this bad. She’s the only one of the rabbits that has no interest in grooming anyone else and will rarely go to any real effort to groom herself. It’s like she just doesn’t understand the fuss about it. She’s not too big on using the litter either. I think right now it’s her moving that’s the problem and she’s staying in one spot too much.

Back from the vet. Kylie’s got some pretty bad urine scald, which is not surprising since she’s been sitting around so much and not bothering with the litter pan. She couldn’t detect any blockages or lumps anything like that, teeth are just fine, temperature is normal. She’s got a 2 week supply of baytril and metacam, and then she goes back in on the 10th to be looked at again. Oh and I’m supposed to bathe her every day for a little while just to try and keep the area clean and get the mats out since she’s not grooming it well. She did say there was a slight chance it might be kidney failure but we’ll see what happens with the meds and then go from there.

Oh, vibes, vibes, vibes. I hope the baytril and metacam help.

Thanks for the vibes, she can certainly use them!  Right now she’s chewing on a cardboard box. Bathed her tonight, she’s got some really serious mats that I’m thinking I might be better off shaving off her. That will leave her skin more exposed, so if she pees and stays sitting in it that’s not so good, but on the other hand the mats are just holding moisture next to her skin.

She’s definitely more social with this illness than she normally is. It’s not just that she’s not fussing too much and allowing herself to be picked up and groomed etc. Keelie, Kylie and Carbun are out and hopping around the dining room right now. A little while ago I went over and patted her and gave her a nose rub, and I thought wow it’s almost like she was enjoying that. Then I gave Carbun and nose rub and Kylie came over and shoved her nose under my hand. She NEVER does that. She hates people. It took a year to get her to take a raisin from my hand. Now she’s asking for nose rubs.

She seems to be a little better today. Skin is looking a little better, fur wasn’t as filthy as it has been the last few days, and she’s a little feistier. Still let me bathe her without too much fuss though. I think I am going to shave her tomorrow though, those mats on her are just atrocious and I can’t see any way of brushing or grooming them out.

Kylie is still not doing very well. I was really hoping that she was improving since her grooming is getting a bit better and she’s been a bit fiestier when bathing her. But she’s still not very active. She’s a litte unsteady when she hops around, and if she falls on her side (or if I put her on her side) then she has a hard time getting up. She’s still eating and drinking and pooping, and eating fruits and veggies. And she’s very good about taking her meds. But she’s still mostly sitting around kind of hunched up most of the day. Carbun sits beside her and I think is propping her up, and he grooms her.

Is this likely to be old age? I really wish we had some idea of how old she was when we adopted her but all they knew was “adult”.
