Does anyone have kindle? If so, do you like it? Why or why not?

I’m thinking of getting one and just wanted to see anyone here had experience with one.

Hi Ripley, I don’t have a Kindle but I have a Nook (an older black and white version) and I think it’s pretty neat – I do love the feel of a book though and having bookmarks and all that stuff too though.

Kindle has just come out with 3 new versions and they all sound pretty neat and are certainly affordable. You may want to go on-line and look for reviews from the techie sites on the new Kindles and go play with one (I think Target carries Kindle).

I’d love to have the Ipad to read books and play on eventually too.

My Mother was given a Kindle this time last year and I recently borrowed it to buy/read a book I couldn’t find in the library. I enjoyed it. It was the black & white one, their simplest I think. I couldn’t find the setting to adjust the contrast, so found the type vs. background a wee bit dark for my taste. Otherwise, it was fine. You can set the type at the size you like, so the pages are longer or shorter depending. She hadn’t used it in months, but I plugged it in and it charged up in a few hours, then I read a 500+ page book with no problem. There are a lot of books available to buy once you connect to the internet. As a basic book substitute, and not a laptop substitute which is what the fancier ones do now I think, it’s good.

I still got 2 books out of the library after I’d finished that one and gave Mum back her Kindle. I am a book lover.

I have one, and I love it…but I still love books too! But the kindle is awesome for me because I am a very fast reader, so when I go on vacations or anything now, I can just bring my kindle with instead of lugging a whole carry-on full of books with me! I was a little surprised that some of the books aren’t cheaper on it, but I still like it. It is WAY smaller than I thought it would be, so it can even fit in most anything, which is nice. And the screen is still plenty big too.

The screen is really easy to read, even in full sunlight. I actually think it is easier to read outside than an actual book, because it doesn’t get as bright as the white pages tend to. I have the last version of Kindle, the one with the keyboard. I got it for $114 at Target, and then I had some discounts so it ended up being like $100. Pretty good investment if you ask me. The battery life is pretty long, and books download super fast too!

              I hope that helps!

The kindle BASE version, has no audio so if you are into audio books, keep that in mind. It also has no touch screen or keyboard, so to browse their online store you have to do the old NES typing and press the to navigate an on screen keyboard. Also, to get the $79 version, you have to accept advertisements as a screesaver/at the bottom of the screen when you shop, otherwise the cheapest is $109. Unless you find one on sale.

The nook has a touch screen menu at the bottom and audio, it also supports EPUB format (first edition does anyway, not sure about all editions) – so you can use most FREE ebooks on it. It is $89 for the 1st edition. It’s also supporting B&N which means the brick & mortar stores get a little boost even though you are buying e-books.

Both have some free books available. Both read project gutenberg books. Both use e-ink. Both use a flash system to make the slight lag e-ink causes to seem less. Both have a big selection. Both have wi-fi. Both use a laser based touch system, which some people find annoying for their touch. They are pretty similar at the moment. B&N lowered its prices for e-books to match kindle, so most of them are the same cost. Both e-readers are fine quality and mostly have the same features and only a $10 difference between their two base models.

My biggest problem with kindle is… I really, really do hate supporting Amazon.com. They until recently sold illegal animal fighting magazines and videos, including magazines that were basically catalogs for buying animal fighting supplies and the HSUS also ordered these for their investigation and animal fighting RINGS complete with bought off police were uncovered in the advertisements in them. Amazon.com refused to stop selling it until the US Postal Service took a step towards not shipping these items because they are against Federal Law. The HSUS was winning its court case, so Amazon took the items off and most the magazines are no longer being published. But, Amazon took them off with the “We have the right to sell these” as the last word.

I don’t have a Kindle. I’m old-fashioned and love paper books. I would recommend you look into a basic tablet tho. You can get them for a bit more than a Kindle and have wifi-connectivity for internet browsing/email too, as well as other market apps and games.

First off, thank you all for your input!

I have no intention of giving up real books I just thought it would be a nice option when traveling, for work, waiting rooms, etc…

Stickerbunny – I did not know that about Amazon! Thank you for the info. I’ll have to look into the nook as well.

I’ve thought about getting a basic tablet to use for reading, surfing, etc… I still might go that route. I think an e-reader might be less distracting than a tablet (games, internet, email, oh my!) for me… But a tablet PC would be so handy.

                    Hm…
