        Hi ,

I bought this Timothy hay mixture and it’s compressed. The Rabbit loves it , but he is very picky .
Is this common in Rabbits?  Apparently   he seems to only pick out the freshed bits and leaves the
yellow hays out. I want to know how I can keep my hay fresh , refrigerator, dry place etc…

        Thank you

Yes, rabbits can be extremely picky about hay – mine aren’t but many of my rabbit friends have picky rabbits when it comes to hay.

Do not store hay in the refrigerator – can cause mold from moisture.

Best to store in a dry place that no moisture can get in – I store mine in my closet in the bunny room. Just keep the hay dry and it should be fine. Sunlight will probably discolor the hay (but I’m not 100% sure of this since I don’t store mine in direct sunlight). Also might take it out of the plastic bag it came in – I store mine in the boxes they came in and take out the plastic covering.

Storing in a closet is great, paper bags or cardboard is a good choice. Sunlight can discolor strands, but this year, Timothy all around is a bit more brown. Doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with the hay, but for picky eaters, it can be a downer. Does your bunny like Orchard? Orchard is more green than Timothy this year, so might try that instead. For people who are worried about pest problems, you can store it in plastic tubs if you poke little airholes throughout and rotate the hay every week.
