Hey everyone!
So as everyone probaly knows, My little Riley died about a week ago. Well im thinking about maybe getting another bun…
Now i know it was only about a week ago but i miss having a bun and think im ready. But one problem : Theres about 0 rabbit shelters in my area
. I really want to rescue but i want it too be about 1ish, also neuterd or spayed. I have found a un-neuterd male flemmie/lop mix in the area, but hes not neuterd and i dont really want to get involved with a uneuterd rabbit after what i had too go through with Riley
. I know your probaly thinking- why dont i just get him neuterd, well theres not a vet in my area that does that either!! I have been using petfinder but there werent many buns from where i live. I have also callled several vets and asked if they know any good shelters but they didnt have much for where i live. Any suggestions for where i should try or thoughts? Thanks guys! ![]()
Don’t really know where you are, so can’t suggest much. There is no vet in your area that treats rabbits? I would be kind of wary of getting a bun if that is the case… and any vet that treats should be able to neuter. I would call up every vet within 30-40 minute drive (or even further, I have to go an hour for mine) and quiz them about rabbits, how many they see, if they treat, how many neuters/spays they do, etc. You may find one that is able to handle a bun.
Google search for rabbit rescues (state) and see if any are in nearby towns or maybe that has a transportation system set up, also call the shelters instead of just pet finder, my shelter only lists hard to adopt cases on pet finder. When I did a search only two buns showed up, but they had like ten at the shelter when I went there. They only list them after they’ve been there for months and haven’t found a home yet. If there are no rabbit vets in your area though, the likelihood of finding an already neutered one is low.
It’s great you’re willing to save a bun and give it a chance. Just take your time and find the right one. You can also notify the shelters that you are looking and if they get any in they will call you. : )
Good luck.
Are you willing to travel a bit? If there was a shelter that had several buns to choose from, a 2-3 hour trip would not be too big of a stress on the bunny, and you’d really only need to go there once. Get confirmation from the rescue in advance (in writing!) that you can take the bunny the same day. That’s really the best suggestion I have if you want to rescue an altered rabbit. Of course, you can purchase a rabbit at a store or thru an online ad, but as you mentioned, altering may be difficult (and you might still end up traveling a couple hours to get to a vet).
I second Sticker. I just read about Riley, I’m so sorry for your loss. You might want to wait to get another bunny until you’re living in an area that has an good exotic vet and emergency backup. Its the sucky responsible thing to do
Or wait until you have transportation to an exotic/emergency vet even if its an hour or 2 away.
Also call your animal control officer or department in your town or the nearest city to you. An older bunny may have been rescued by them or dropped off, and need a home asap because they are going to be put down at a city rescue, unlike a private no-kill shelter. They are usually used for dogs and cats, but I know my nearby bigger city has several bunnies there at times, and it would be a big rescue of a bunny from that facility.
Remember, the week after Easter provides a flurry of new, adoptable bunnies from impulse buyers who discovered that they aren’t as cute/easy to live with as they look. If you can hold out for about a month, you will find many being dropped off and given away in several places. (Unfortunately.) They’re usually former pet store purchases.
The vet Riley went too is about 45 min away- not that bad. It totally slipped my mind that they were close….whoops! But there arnt many shelters. Im not sure how far i’d be willing to drive. Maybe about a couple of hours? I live around Binghamton,NY. I am out in country though. This any help? thanks guys.
Those lop/flemmie mixes have been listed for a long time on Petfinder, so if they are indeed still available for adoption they definitely need good homes. Two new rabbits were listed today for the SPCA at Syracuse, for a total of four, three of them males. They will get them neutered, and the fee is low. $45 I think. And remember, Cornell University is about an hours drive from you, maybe just a tad more. It’s where I take Hodari for everything. They are excellent and are open 24/7 for emergencies. I know you’d like something closer, but they are really, really good. Best of luck. I am very sorry about Riley.
http://www.therabbitresource.org/recommendedvets.html Upstate NY vets list from HRS, they also have an adoption section.
Schoolhouse rescues I assume is where you found the bunny you are talking about, they have 3 buns listed in your area. A little after Easter, as Pam said, your shelters will get more bunnies in though. A lot of the unwanted bunnies from then go on craigslist too, you may find someone needing to rehome their bun that will do it without wanting to sell and honestly, when people can’t find a new home for their rabbits they often release/shelter them so it can be saving a life as well.
I know there are shelters somewhere within the vicinity of Binghamton – I went on Petfinder and found quite a few that are within an hour or two drive. I live in the Hudson Valley and am less than 3 hours away and we have shelters here. Rochester and Albany are also within 3 hours and definitely have shelters, but I’m sure there is something closer too.
3 Bunnies is located in CT, but their site lists quite a few rescues in NY that aren’t that far from you: http://www.3bunnies.org/rescues.htm#nyrabbit
I also found a listing for Binghamton Rabbit Rescue and Resource. I can’t find a link, but their phone number is 607-725-8030 so you can call and find out if they still exist.
Yeah, there are certainly options. I’m sure you can find an awesome bunny not too far away to adopt. Hopefully one will catch your eye soon!
That’s great to know about the exotics specialist in Vestal. I looked her up, and it looks like she makes herself available on weekends for emergencies, too, so that’s terrific. Better than driving to Cornell certainly.
