I just wanted to let everyone know that Sweet Pea was neutered yesterday. Everything is going good, he’s not licking it excessively or anything like that. I dropped him off around 8a.m. and about an hour and a half later the vet called to said he was doing great. She kept talking about how cute he was and that he had won the cutest pet of the day award. lol So I was wondering can I still let him run around his room/house? He does not seem to be in any pain, I feel bad for leaving him in his cage but the vet said to keep him calm for at least 3 days. How did you treat your rabbit the first few days after getting them fixed? Thanks so much.

I just treated Marlee like normal. She was in her cage at night and while I was at work, and then ran around my room the rest of the time. Luckily she never bothered her stitches and she healed up perfectly.

            Good healing vibes

Like you I felt so bad about caging Karl…after 8-9 hours he was let out to do some running for an hour or 3 under supervision, and then he was put back into his cage. No need for it but only because the vet had also told me to keep him caged for 3 days, But he was perfectly fine, so the next morning I let him out full-time again, and there were no problems at all.

My bun was neutered on a Friday and I picked him up Saturday afternoon becaue the vet wanted to make sure he was eating and pooping well before they let him go home (I love that they do this). So by the time I got him he’d had 24 hours of quiet recovery already and he was a mad bun running around his cage and jumping up on the shelf. I felt bad keeping him locked in there, so I opened up the cage so he could run in his pen too. He did some crazy bunny runs and binkies, haha. I felt bad for not keeping him locked up for at least another day, but he was absolutely fine. I would just maybe take away toys that encourage too much jumping, like a maze haven or something, and let him do on the ground activities.

I understand it is hard to keep a restless bunny caged or at least limited with exercise. If you have an xpen, it can allow a little more freedom without putting him at risk from pulling internal stitching out.  I know that others have not had negative experiences by letting their bunnies run around soon after, and that really is great, but I caution you because damage can happen if you let him exercise too much (especially jumping, sprinting etc) too soon after surgery.  So I just encourage you not to take any chances and  follow your vets orders. 3 days isn’t that long (my vet suggested a week!)

I provided lots of chew toys (phone books are great for a restless tyrant) in an xpen and had nothing in there that he could jump up and down from.

                Happy Healing!!

                  Everything is going good,

Wonderful!! You don’t know how many people ask about something scary and don’t update-keeps me up at night honestly!!! Thank you for letting us know

kept talking about how cute he was and that he had won the cutest pet of the day award.

That’s awesome!! Big bunny mum compliment Vets see soooo many animals -thats a big compliment!

                  TBH I’ve never had a neuter done-just a spay-my others (I have three boys) I adopted fixed.

I konw that males bounce back quicker then females (umn yeah!! b/c it’s outside stuff rather then inside stuff-makes sense) ; Males can be back to their own self the same day. BUT BUT BUT I would stil keep him quiet for three days. Really it’s no biggie. Three days compared to a lifespan of 8-12 years? Nothin…the only thing to worry about is your conscience-don’t feel guilty -you don’t want complications

Yay! I’m glad to hear he is doing well. I would agree with your vet on keeping him quiet for a few days. I even gave my bunnies the bottom half of the carrier as a litter box since they could just walk into it without jumping over the side of the litterbox. It is also a good idea to check once a day on how the swelling is, and how the healing process is going just to make sure that everything is OK.

Glad he’s coming along well. I also agree that the best bet is to follow vet’s orders. It’s to prevent new harm to unhealed areas, even if you can’t see them.
Also, I was told not to let Sammy jump, so had to remove her platform. The rest will do you both good.
If you need to check his site and can’t hold him up, then try giving him a treat he needs to stand up for and hold a mirror to reflect the under part where the surgery was just to catch a peek if it’s too red or swollen. It will probably be shaved and mildly discolored. That’s normal.
