So my lil dude Theo is a purebred Rhinelander, and I’ve never thought anything of it. Bunnies are bunnies, right?
I just picked up a cute bunny at an animal shelter. But *apparently* Rhinelanders are on a watch list since there are few breeders and less than 2,000 Rhinelanders in the world, and most breeders charge out the wazoo for them.  I just think it’s kinda neat!  (but I’ll honestly probably forget about it completely because this info won’t really affect or change anything, lmao).

That’s pretty cool. I would be very surprised to see a pure bred Rhinelander outside the breeding circuit. I assume you got him from a breeder then?

Most rare breeds if a rescue I wouldn’t consider them that pure breed, especially since a lot of rabbits can look very similar. Do you have any pics of Theo?

I got him from a shelter, the people who gave him up got him from a breeder. Although, I’m looking at the standards for a Rhinelander, and I’m thinking he’s 90% Rhinelander but not full… he doesn’t have the butterfly on his nose. That’s the only requirement he doesn’t meet. Oh whale! It wouldn’t make a difference anyway to me since he’s neutered and I’m certainly never giving him up

I’m doing my best to upload, but I can’t figure it out!  Here’s a link to pictures of him (and Eve:p) https://www.instagram.com/eveandtheo/

Aww, they are just the cutest thing! Have added you (I’m Bunny Basics on there)

Wile he has the broken markings, a lot of rabbits have those and apart from that he doesn’t look to have the body type to me, he looks like an adorable lop mix to me with aeroplane ears (they’re the best, Luna has them too). In any case, both Theo and Eve are super cute.

Well, someone I thought I could trust told me he was a Rhinelander:p Now I just feel silly.  This is why I’m not a bun expert and will never claim to be.

And oh good!  I’m always looking for new bun instagrams to follow!

It’s not your fault. If they were told he was a Rhinelander and didn’t know much about breeds, then who are they to question the person who told them. A lot of people mistakenly ID their broken black rabbits as an English Spot (which I did too when I was young with my first rabbit) but the English Spot is quite a distinct rabbit once you get used to seeing the differences. Don’t feel bad, rabbit breeds are tougher to distinguish than things like dog breeds. He’s no less of a beautiful rabbit for it
